Sagem Communication is the first manufacturer worldwide to reach 1 Million MPEG4 single-chip Set-Top Boxes delivered

SagemSagem Communication (SAFRAN Group) today announced the cumulated delivery of over 1 million MPEG4 Set-top boxes, based on a single-chip decoder provided by STMicroelectronics, one year after having started the commercial roll-out of the first units.

When compared to MPEG2 video compression technology, the use of MPEG4 compression technology enables broadcasters and service operators, using their existing broadcast network, to offer end users HDTV and/or many more TV channels.

Sagem Communication has a complete range of MPEG4 Set-top Boxes, from basic low-end units to Personal Video Recorders, either in Standard Definition or in High Definition, to address the four existing broadcast technologies: IP, satellite, terrestrial and cable. This range has already been selected by over 10 majors operators in Europe, for their MPEG4 deployment, in particular for the launch of their High Definition offers mid-2006, in conjunction with the Football World Cup.

“We are proud to be the first manufacturer worldwide to reach the significant ‘1 million’ mark”, said Patrick Sévian, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Sagem Communication. “We thank our customers for the trust they placed in our company for the deployment of their MPEG4 services, using our cost-effective, reliable next-generation range of products, offering end users state-of-the-art technology for tomorrow’s TV.”

Sagem Communication entered in the STB business in 1989 by manufacturing analog decoders with digital conditional access, and launched its first digital set-top boxes in 1996. Today, Sagem Communication is Europe’s leading STB manufacturer for digital terrestrial and IP TV, thanks to a wide range of products, from basic low-end STBs with limited functionality – also known as ‘zapper’ boxes – to advanced twin-tuner digital TV receivers with integrated Hard Disk Drive (Personal Video Recorders).

More Than One Million Songs Now Available on V CAST Music from Verizon Wireless

Fulfilling its promise to expand the V CAST Music catalog by spring, Verizon Wireless announced today from CTIA Wireless 2006 that its customers now have access to more than one million songs through V CAST Music, the world’s most comprehensive mobile music service. V CAST Music offers customers the most song choices of any over-the-air music service in the country and demonstrates Verizon Wireless’ commitment to meet the needs of customers who want mobile music and the ease of carrying a single device.

John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless, said, “V CAST Music has proven that Americans love to call their music; with a selection of more than one million songs, Verizon Wireless offers more songs for every music taste. Our relationships with the major labels and leading indie providers, such as The Orchard, CD Baby, IODA and DRA, help us offer a V CAST Music catalog as diverse as the American public.”

Also today, Verizon Wireless released its lists of the top 10 downloaded V CAST Music songs in 25 different music genres (see lists below).

Verizon Wireless gives V CAST Music customers exclusive access to songs from today’s hottest artists. On the heels of the Fugees history-making outdoor concert in Los Angeles, Verizon Wireless V CAST Music customers can check out the Fugees’ newest single “Wannabe” from their unreleased album exclusively on V CAST Music. The full-length song download of “Wannabe” makes its debut on Verizon Wireless today — before it can be heard on the radio or purchased at any Web retailer, music store or other music distribution channel. The exclusive includes the full-length song download, ring tone and ring back tone.

Last month, Verizon Wireless also brought V CAST customers the world premiere of the full-length song, music video, ring tone, ring back tone and more for “Hips Don’t Lie,” the song that marked the unique collaboration of global artists Shakira and Wyclef Jean. The “Hips Don’t Lie” single and other content are available for purchase exclusively on V CAST — prior to being sold at any Web retailer, music store or other music distribution channel.

V CAST Music from Verizon Wireless lets customers play music on their wireless phones from well-known and independent artists — the same device they have come to rely upon for entertainment, information and mobile communication. The V CAST Music store lets customers browse, preview, download and play high-quality digital music from their phones or in the Verizon Wireless V CAST Music online store. V CAST Music songs cost $0.99 if purchased from the PC or $1.99 if purchased and downloaded over the air onto a V CAST Music phone.

Available to more than 150 million Americans from coast to coast, V CAST Music runs on Verizon Wireless’ broadband network, the most robust, award- winning wireless broadband network in the nation. Customers need a V CAST- enabled phone and a subscription to a V CAST VPak, which is $15.00 monthly access, added to their Verizon Wireless calling plan to access V CAST Music on their phones. Customers interested in managing their music from their PCs in the V CAST Music Online Store can do so without a V CAST VPak.

MobiTV and IPWireless Partner To Develop Next Generation Mobile TV Solutions for Mobile Operators

Solutions Will Enhance Subscriber Experience and Allow Operators To Offer Optimal Blend of Unicast and TDtv Broadcast Services

MobiTV, Inc., the global leader in digital television and music services for mobile devices, and IPWireless today announced that the two companies plan to jointly develop next generation mobile television delivery solutions that combine today’s unicast technologies with TDtv multicasting in order to optimally manage network utilization, all while providing a seamless MobiTV experience for customers. During the first half of 2006, the companies will demonstrate delivery of MobiTV over TDtv to mobile handsets.

Many operators worldwide have launched successful mobile television offerings using the Emmy® Award winning MobiTV® service and other multimedia services over their existing 2.5G and 3G networks. MobiTV’s global network offering, using unicast technology today, accelerates time-to-market and allows operators to capitalize on early mobile television demand. In the future adoption rate and demand for mobile television will require other broadcast or multicast solutions to compliment or co-exist with the unicast offering. TDtv is an ideal partner offering, able to leverage the newly defined 3GPP Release 6 Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS) standard to allow an infinite number of customers to watch the same channel or use the same network bandwidth.

MobiTV and IPWireless plan to work together to co-develop solutions that enable operators to migrate subscribers in high-usage areas to TDtv, utilizing their existing 3G spectrum. The two companies will also work with operators to ensure this unicast and broadcast combination is seamless for the mobile subscriber. As part of this, MobiTV will develop a H.264 version of its player to run over TDtv. H.264 is the video codec defined in the 3GPP MBMS standard that allows higher quality video to be delivered over wireless networks.

“We are committed to delivering the MobiTV service on any platform and across any network. Our partnership with IPWireless to develop a high-efficiency multicast solution that will utilize existing cellular infrastructure is a natural complement and extension to the growing reach of our mobile television and music services. These new network technologies will allow even more profitable delivery of our most popular stations in even the most crowded cities,” said Phillip Alvelda, CEO and chairman of MobiTV. “Operators around the world are realizing that it is in their best interest to launch mobile television services on their existing 2.5 and 3G networks and develop solutions that allow them to keep improving their offerings as new broadcast platforms are deployed. TDtv is one such solution because it allows operators to meet migration demands by utilizing their existing unpaired 3G assets.”

“IPWireless will continue to partner with leaders like MobiTV to improve the overall value proposition of TDtv for subscribers and operators,” said Dr. Bill Jones, chief operating officer, IPWireless. “With more than half a million subscribers already using MobiTV services, MobiTV is a world leader in understanding how mobile subscribers enjoy content. They are in a unique position to help IPWireless ensure subscribers enjoy an optimal experience when using TDtv.”

TDtv, which is based on the newly defined 3GPP Release 6 Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Standard (MBMS), offers operators a number of significant strategic, performance, and economic advantages over alternative mobile television solutions. TDtv operates in the universal unpaired 3G spectrum bands that are available across Europe and Asia at 1900MHz and 2010MHz. It allows UMTS operators to fully utilize their existing spectrum and base stations to offer subscribers attractive mobile TV and multimedia packages without impacting other voice and data 3G services. TDtv allows operators to deliver up to 50 channels of TV for standard cell phone screens, or 17 higher quality QVGA channels, in 5MHz of unpaired 1900 MHz spectrum, or twice the number of channels for operators with 10MHz of spectrum in the other bands supported by IPWireless worldwide. With TDtv, operators will also be able to deliver digital audio, multicast, or other IP data cast services to enhance their service offerings.

Based on a successful trial phase, IPWireless expects commercial TDtv networks to be rolled out by mid 2007 using technology from IPWireless and solutions from ecosystem partners.

Customers who purchased the LG VX8100 or the Samsung a950 prior to the launch of V CAST Music and wish to upgrade may simply bring the phone into a Verizon Wireless store and the V CAST Music application will be installed. Enjoying music on the Sony Ericsson W810 Walkman phone is extremely simple because a dedicated Walkman button quickly pulls up the music menu regardless of other applications in use. Take Center Stage With Motorola’s Next ROKR

Newest Music-Optimized Mobile Delivers More Tunes Much Faster

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today is unveiling the Motorola ROKR E2 — the newest member of the company’s ROKR family of music-optimized mobile handsets. Designed for the music enthusiast who wants to carry one device, ROKR E2 lets you take hundreds of your must-have music selections with you — and delivers a world-class wireless communications experience.

Motorola is showcasing ROKR E2 as part of its rapidly evolving vision of Seamless Mobility for consumers at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show in Central Hall Booth 8545, where visitors can experience innovations that enable enriched wireless communications, home entertainment, and on-the-go productivity.

Delivering a powerful mobile music experience, ROKR E2 lets you switch seamlessly between phone calls and music play lists simply by touching a button. Based on a Linux operating system to enhance speed and flexibility, ROKR E2 also features a robust MP3 player compatible with a variety of different audio formats — making this mobile handset a powerful example of what it means to be “the device formerly known as the cell phone.”

“No matter what consumers listen to — rap, hip hop, country, classical or pop — one thing is for sure, they want their music with them, wherever they go,” said Richard Chin, corporate vice president, Global Products Marketing, Motorola Mobile Devices. “Motorola is driving the convergence of music and mobility by combining the device you never leave home without, with the entertainment consumers crave. We’re giving people a seamless, mobile music experience with a portfolio of devices like the new ROKR E2 leading the way.”

More Music, Faster
ROKR E2 makes loading music simple. Users make a fast connection from the device to a compatible PC using a USB 2.0 cable.* Next, they “drag and drop” digital music files from their PC-based music collection directly to the phone. Each song takes only seconds to transfer from the PC to the ROKR E2. With up to 2GB of optional removable SD(TM) mass memory*, ROKR E2 lets you store as many as 500 of your favorite tunes, as well as create and manage playlists. And, when you’re ready to listen to what’s on the airwaves, ROKR E2 also comes equipped with built-in FM radio functionality.

Richer Audio Experiences
ROKR E2’s features are built for ease-of-use. Dedicated music keys on the handset’s side and front let you navigate playlists, as well as play/pause, skip backward/forward, and hold. Connect to ROKR E2 via a standard 3.5mm headset or wirelessly via the built-in stereo Bluetooth(R) audio connection**. Motorola offers a wide range of music accessories to optimize your ROKR E2 experience including the newly announced O ROKR Eyewear, Motorola Bluetooth DJ Headphones S805, and JBL OnTour(TM) Mobile. Additionally, ROKR E2 comes with airplane mode, allowing you to safely listen while on the ground or in the air. Other multimedia features include a 1.3 megapixel camera for pictures, video capture and playback and SCREEN3 technology for zero-click access to news, sports and entertainment content***.

Technically Savvy
ROKR E2 is also part of Motorola’s growing portfolio of Linux-based handsets. Open software solutions such as Linux help Motorola create the best mobile experiences for wireless operators and consumers. By leveraging Linux, Motorola can deliver products to market faster, reduce costs and create more innovative products and experiences for mobile music, productivity, and entertainment. The company’s first “mid-tier” Linux-based device, ROKR E2 further demonstrates Motorola’s commitment to driving Linux-for-mobile innovation across the company’s device portfolio.

ROKR E2 Availability

Sony Ericsson extends Walkman family to four with first UMTS music phone - the W900i

Sony Ericsson has added its first UMTS handset to the Walkman range of music phones bringing the total number of phones in the range to four. The W900i is a high quality fully specified music player, phone and imaging device capable of super-fast downloads of all types of multimedia – music, video and graphics. It follows the highly successful global market launch of the W800i. As the W600i and the W550i are now available in the Americas and the rest of the world, there are now Walkman phones meeting a broad spectrum of mobile music needs and price segments.

As a music player, the W900i makes it easy to import, transfer, manage and play music from operators’ over-the-air (OTA) music download services, allowing tracks to be downloaded directly to the phone while on the move and, from a PC when tracks have been copied from the owner’s CD collection.

“The W900i, along with the rest of the Walkman phone family, will establish a new lifestyle habit of enjoying superb quality music and video and a full internet web experience on the move from a single mobile device,” says Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President, Product and Application Planning of Sony Ericsson. “In our first UMTS Walkman phone we have combined fast download speeds with superb sound quality and crystal clear 30 frames per second video recording and play-back in a really simple and easy to use device. The W900i will not only appeal as a music phone. The superb communications, multimedia and imaging functionality will appeal to all those wanting a true multimedia capable device.”

Music transfer and download
One of the most enticing features of the W900i is how easy it will be to import, transfer, play and manage music files. Tracks can be imported from a variety of sources, either over-the-air direct to the phone if it supports an available operator music download service, or via a PC.

Transferring digital music files from a PC to the phone is a simple ‘drag and drop’ and the W900i is also fully compatible with user-copied content from all leading music management software packages. This is particularly useful for consumers already owning another type of digital music player who want to transfer tracks that originate from their CD collection on to the W900i.

The supplied Disc2Phone PC software allows the user to easily transfer music to the phone from audio CDs and a PC music collection. Disc2Phone can transfer music based on playlists and has a fun and easy-to-use shuffle functionality. The W900i’s large internal 470MB user free memory provides space for between 120 and 240 songs. The storage capacity is easily increased however by inserting a Memory Stick PRO Duo, currently available in retail outlets at up to 2GB, giving space for up to 1,000 tracks. Music files can be stored in all the key formats: MP3, AAC or AAC+, MIDI, WAV and XMF.

Functionality and design
The versatile swivel design makes it easy to multitask between the W900i’s many functions, a feature which gives the phone an advantage over dedicated music players. The direct music buttons get the user swiftly into the Walkman player where it is possible to scroll through play lists, artists or individual songs. Users fed up with missing calls because they are listening to music will love the fact that the phone’s ringtone cuts into the audio and pauses the track while the user takes the call.

The phone swivels open automatically with the lightest of touches, revealing a large keypad. Virtually all functions can be performed with the phone closed, and users can read messages or search through their music library without opening the phone.

Imaging and multimedia
More than a fully featured music player, the W900i is a highly advanced imaging and multimedia device with broadband-fast download speeds, smooth, responsive browse capabilities and a large, 2.2 inch QVGA 262K TFT screen, one of the brightest ever seen on a mobile phone.

The 2.0-Megapixel, autofocus camera with LED flash- or picture-light is perfect for capturing priceless moments and, thanks to the Sony Ericsson dual fronted design, is operated with both hands in a horizontal position for maximum stability. The camera also shoots video at up to 30fps (frames per second), double the speed of most conventional imaging phones and the playback quality threshold for television.

With the supplied Adobe PC software, pictures and videos can be easily imported to a PC as soon as the phone is connected using the fast USB connection. They can then be edited, printed and shared using the easy-to-use and powerful Adobe software, and videos can be played back using Apple QuickTime Player.

As an entertainment device the W900i exploits the UMTS-delivered capabilities to the full, delivering fast and smooth download and browsing of video, games, sound and graphics. The high performance 3D Java gaming engine is put to the test with the embedded Asphalt Urban GT 3D from Gameloft, where users can experience the thrills of extreme racing at the wheel of the ultimate sports cars.

Accessories
The W900i is the first Sony Ericsson phone to be supplied with a Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-80 with remote control that allows the user to operate the Walkman player without removing it from their pocket. A USB cable and Disc2Phone PC software for transfer and management of music files are also included in the box.

W900i Availability
The W900i UMTS Walkman phone is available in black or white and will be commercially available by January 2005. The variants will be:

  • W900i Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa
  • W900c Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Mainland China. Launch for mainland China dependant on availability of 3G services.
