If showing a photo on the K850’s large 2.2″ crystal bright display, the innovative auto rotate feature will display it in the correct aspect - portrait or landscape - irrespective of the orientation it was taken in. Picture blogging and video blogging allow you to upload your shots and footage at HSDPA speeds to your own blogsite.

Easy to pair - Given the premium look of the K850 Cyber-shot phone, you will want to match it with an accessory that looks just as good. Announced today as an optional accessory, the Bluetooth Headset IV840 fits discretely and securely into your ear. This high-performance headset can leave you handsfree for up to 9 hours of talking. It can pair automatically with the K850 for easy set-up, whilst digital noise cancellation provides for optimum sound quality. So, like the K850, the IV840 does not compromise performance or ease of use.

The Sony Ericsson K850 Cyber-shot phone is a Tri-Band HSDPA and Quad-Band GPRS/EDGE phone with a colour choice of either Velvet Blue or Luminous Green. It will be available in selected markets from early Q4 2007.

SAMSUNG Develops 1/4 inch 3-megapixel CMOS Image Sensor for Ultra Slim Camera Phone

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced the world’s first 3-megapixel (M-pixel) CMOS image sensor (CIS) with a 1/4-inch lens aperture that is well suited for ultra slim camera phones.

“The rapidly evolving trend of user created content, blogs, and personal web pages is triggering demand for constant access to high-resolution images, bringing the consumer’s attention to high-resolution camera phones,” said Yong-Hee Lee, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Division. “Our 1.75um-pixel, 1/4-inch lens aperture 3M-pixel CIS is a unique combination of Samsung’s high resolution sensor technology and high speed serial interface that brings digital still camera-level picture quality to mobile handsets.”  Samsung’s new 1.75um-size pixel enables the 1/4-inch lens aperture to drastically reduce the camera module size by 30 percent as opposed to a conventional 2.25um pixel 1/3-inch lens aperture 3M-pixel CIS. The small form factor allows the 1.75um-pixel, 1/4-inch lens aperture 3M-pixel CIS to immediately replace a 1/4-inch lens aperture 2M-pixel CIS module, as it shares the same physical measurements with the new 3M-pixel CIS.
The 1.75um pixel, 1/4-inch lens aperture 3M-pixel CIS shows no degrading in the picture quality compared to a 2.25um pixel, 1/3-inch lens aperture 3M-pixel CIS. The new CIS chip provides a small form factor and high picture quality.

By utilizing 90-nanometer (nm) process technology, Samsung expects to mass produce the new 1.75um pixel, 1/4-inch lens aperture 3-Mp CIS in the first quarter of 2007. The new CIS chip uses Samsung’s proprietary 90nm copper technology that reduces the distance between the micro-lens to the photo diode thereby resulting in maximizing the light-gathering efficiency to overcome the potential decline of image quality as the pixel size scales down.

According to market research firm iSuppli, camera phones are expected to account for 777million units, which is 74 percent of total mobile phones in 2007. 3M-pixel and higher resolution phones are expected to take up 13 percent of total camera phones. And with the increasing demand of high-resolution camera phones, this portion is expected to reach 38 percent in 2008.

OmniVision Introduces World’s Smallest 1.3 Megapixel CameraChip Sensor

New Sensor Enables Ultra Slim Camera Phones With Megapixel Quality

OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: OVTI), a leading independent supplier of CMOS CameraChip image sensors for high-volume applications, today launched its sixth generation 1.3 megapixel CameraChip sensor. Featuring a 2-micron pixel and 1/5-inch optical format, the OV9660 enables a 25 percent thinner camera module, meeting the requirements of ultra slim handset designs. Additionally, the smaller module size is especially attractive to handset makers because it allows a drop-in upgrade from VGA to 1.3 megapixels, thereby extending the life of existing VGA camera phone designs.

“Handset makers continue to design thinner and more compact camera phones to support consumer demand for ultra-slim handsets,” said Jess Lee, Vice President for Mainstream Products at OmniVision. “Bringing our proven OmniPixel2 technology to market in the industry’s smallest format gives handset designers more options for camera placement, opening up even more possibilities for small form factor camera phone designs.”

The small form factor is also generating considerable interest from ultra portable laptop manufacturers who, due to size constraints, have been limited to using only VGA resolution cameras. The introduction of the OV9660 now allows these ultra portable laptop makers to upgrade to 1.3 megapixel cameras without the need for a costly system redesign.

Based on OmniVision’s proprietary OmniPixel2 technology platform, the OV9660 incorporates multiple features that have been proven to meet customers’ high image-quality requirements. The OV9660 offers a one-fifth inch optical format and a 6 x 6 x 4.0 mm module size, which is currently the smallest available for 1.3 megapixel cameras and identical to most VGA camera modules. It is a low-voltage CMOS sensor with the full functionality of a single-chip SXGA (1280 x 1024) camera and image processor. OmniPixel2’s unique pixel architecture significantly increases signal-to-noise ratio enabling the OV9660 to perform exceptionally well in low-light conditions.

The OV9660 provides full-frame, sub-sampled, scaled or windowed 8-bit/10-bit images in a wide range of formats controlled through a serial camera control bus (SCCB) interface. All required image processing functions including exposure control, gamma, white balance, color saturation, hue control, white pixel cancelling and noise cancelling are programmable through the SCCB interface.

The OV9660 comes in CSP and COB packages and is currently available for sampling.

Style with substance: tribal art, ethnic decoration define the latest models of Nokia’s L’Amour Collection

Nokia unveils three new mobile phones for the fashion-conscious, including the first 3G fashion phone

Building upon the success of last year’s highly popular L’Amour Collection, Nokia has unveiled three new mobile phones to meet the growing demand by stylish consumers the world over. From the elegantly iconic Nokia 7390, Nokia’s first 3G fashion phone, to the truly desirable Nokia 7373 and the timeless Nokia 7360, each model from the latest L’Amour Collection draws its design inspiration from tribal art and ethnic decoration. The result - a beautifully designed, intelligently considered and exceptionally crafted range of mobile phones, in a palate of colours and textures to meet every desire.

Finding inspiration in the faded luxury of grand architecture, the models from the L’Amour Collection will be appreciated as much for their exotic design as well as their impressive sophisticated set of features. Forms remain modern, round and pure. An earthy palate of colour and traditional materials, updates the bohemian feel of the earlier collection. Aspects of embroidery, 3D appliqué, ceramic tiling and other traditional decoration are refined and modernised through a new craftsmanship - resulting in beautifully embossed leather finishes and graphics which are sublime yet eclectic. Further unexpected combinations enhance the splendour of the L’Amour Collection, as does the mix of traditional handcrafts with cutting edge technology. The collection espouses a ‘nouveau-ethnic’ feel - the muted tonality and bleached colour reflecting fashion’s new and sophisticated way of incorporating decoration.

Nokia 7390: Professional elegance with a modern edge This sleek, elegant fold phone, consummately blends precision technology with groundbreaking design. As Nokia’s first 3G fashion phone, the Nokia 7390 combines exquisite materials and design innovation within a fully featured phone. The 3 megapixel camera and WCDMA high-speed connectivity is subtly hidden within ceramic-inspired shell and leather panels. Ideal for a 24/7 lifestyle, the Nokia 7390 is available in two colours, a Bronze Black version provides a masculine feel, echoing cigar parlours and oak-panelled studies of a by-gone era. The Powder Pink model is a daring combination of ceramic white and powder pink, a colour palate currently found on fashion catwalks and furniture fairs.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7390 is expected to be approximately EUR 450, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 7373: Metropolitan style, fluid form Ethnic patterns and a compact swivel design gives the Nokia 7373 its fresh look and perfect grip. Elaborate tribal markings provide a unique point for contemporary design interpretation, where form and decoration are married seamlessly together. This results in finely tooled surfaces, exquisite detail, embossed finishing and further decoration when the mobile phone is opened, proving that the Nokia 7373 is a veritable treasure chest of reference and culture.

The Nokia 7373 is available in Bronze black, Powder Pink and Black Chrome, with a wide array of complementary graphical themes. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7373 is expected to be approximately EUR 350, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 7360: Subtly styled, elegantly compact The Nokia 7360 is an elegant and compact mobile phone, subtly styled with accents inspired by metal, leather and transparent surfaces. The innovative use of materials gives this mobile phone its unique character, which evokes modern design classics. A tactile inlayed leather effect gently wraps around the phone, meeting smooth ceramic-inspired surfaces and glistening metallic details. The Nokia 7360 comes in two colour options. A chrome and black original that is strong, streamlined and reliable. The Powder Pink girlish, charming and undoubtedly the phone that Lewis Carroll’s Alice would have used had she needed to make a call from Wonderland.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7360 is expected to be approximately EUR 200, excluding taxes and subsidies.

The renewed L’Amour Collection is a universal journey of romance, a fusion of technology with traditional craft and a union of ancient art with modern communication. Each model from the L’Amour Collection is expected to begin shipping this fall.

Motorola Introduces the Motorola i580, the Integration of Ruggedness and Sophistication

New phone is the first ruggedized iDEN(R) handset with Integrated Bluetooth(R), MP3 player and camera

Motorola (NYSE:MOT) today announced the Motorola i580, the newest iDEN(R) handset to answer the call for an ultra-durable, stylish, fully equipped handset. It is the first rugged iDEN(R) clam phone designed to meet strict military specifications for blowing rain, dust, shock and vibration and to be enhanced with an extensive multimedia experience, which includes Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, video and messaging. The phone’s durable design and rubber over mold can withstand even the toughest day on the job or the most demanding outdoor activities, for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. In addition, users can enjoy myriad “push-to” functions that make for a truly rewarding push-to-talk (PTT) experience.

“At Motorola, we constantly strive to deliver products that are as remarkable as their users — whose lives are fast paced and demanding — and the Motorola i580 is designed to live with them, through tough weather conditions or less than optimal treatment,” said Peter Aloumanis, director, U.S. Markets Division, Motorola’s iDEN(R) Mobile Devices. “However, a durable (rugged) phone does not mean limited functionality; the many media and PTT features in the i580 undoubtedly will enhance the communications experience.”

Through its iDEN(R) technology, Motorola continues to redefine PTT, and the i580 is no exception. Equipped with new “Push-To-Smart Replies” functionality, users can now respond to PTT calls with either a custom or preset text message*, allowing PTT communication with other i580 users in situations where voice communication would be inappropriate, such as in meetings, libraries, etc.

The most complete ruggedized phone yet, the i580 contains features new to iDEN(R) handsets, including:

  • Push-to-Smart Replies - Discretely send a text message using PTT, even in the most difficult to communicate times.*
  • Push-to-Meet - Users can now create Datebook reminders on their iDEN(R) handsets and send them to other i580 users via PTT.*
  • Push-to-X (PTX) Manager - The PTX Manager Menu allows users to control all of the i580’s unique Push-To features from one, streamlined, intuitive menu.
  • Enhanced support for the visually impaired — The i580’s Voice Playback functionality has a simulated voice to guide users through phone menus and through placing and receiving phone calls.
  • Front Ported Audio Support - The i580 is equipped with dual, frontal speakers, as opposed to the traditional single rear speaker.
  • New Lithium Ion Battery - Increased power packed into a compact design to support handset enhancements without a decrease in talk time.

The phone also has many of the features associated with Motorola’s iDEN(R) technology, including Bluetooth, location-based services*, Selective Dynamic Group Call (SDGC)*, MOTOTalk(TM), support for expandable memory (Micro SD), integrated speakerphone, voice recorder, downloadable applications*, and a two-way radio for instant communication at the touch of a button throughout the continental US, and to Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Argentina.

The i580 will be available in Q2 of this year. To view or download an image of the Motorola i580, please visit http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/graphics/list/0,,4287,00.html

Motorola and Avvenu Announce New Mobile Service for Image Sharing On the Go

With new Motorola Share service, photos stored on your computer can be viewed and shared remotely using your Motorola mobile phone

Today at the Consumer Electronics Show, Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT), a global leader in wireless communications and Avvenu, a Palo Alto, California based start-up specializing in remote access and sharing technology, announced Motorola Share, a free service for mobile users providing on-the-go image access and sharing capabilities from a wide range of Motorola mobile devices — including the popular RAZR, ROKR, and V557 models.

Sharing photos with the new service is easy, requiring only an Internet- connected computer with Motorola Share software and a web-enabled mobile handset.* From a mobile device, users can view images stored on their computer and select a guest to share them with. An email notification with a link grants the guest safe, password-protected access to only the images selected. Users of the service maintain complete control over what pictures are shared, who has access to them and for how long.

The Motorola Share service is flexible, allowing for optimized image viewing on the mobile phone screen. An automatic image scaling feature enables users to share even high-resolution photos with ease. Also, because images are stored on the user’s Internet-connected computer, the service does not require guests to download the images to their mobile phone or upload to a centralized server, reducing time for image load and preview.

“With the new Motorola Share service, Motorola and Avvenu are enabling users to seamlessly share their world with friends, family and colleagues from the device they always have with them — their mobile phone,” said Anna Jen, Senior Director of Global Product Marketing, Motorola, Inc. “This new service illustrates another way Motorola is designing innovative experiences for our mobile users and delivering on our vision of seamless mobility.”

“Through our collaboration with Motorola, Avvenu is providing consumers with access to their favorite snapshots at their fingertips,” said Keith Barraclough, Avvenu founder and CEO. “Whether at home, at work or on the road, users of the new Motorola Share service can spontaneously share their memories with those who matter most.”

The Motorola Share service is free* and available now for mobile subscribers in North America with support for other regions to follow. For more information or to download the Motorola Share application, please visit http://www.hellomoto.com/share .

Sony Ericsson Launches Stylish W810 Walkman(R) Phone

New Quad-Band EDGE Walkman Phone Delivers High-Quality Music Experience With Two Megapixel AutoFocus Camera and Removable Memory

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW — Sony Ericsson today announced the latest addition to its line-up of Walkman(R)- branded mobile music phones to further enhance the consumer’s mobile music experience, the sophisticated, Satin Black W810. The Sony Ericsson W810 is a Quad-band EDGE phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), enabling people to easily transfer their CD collection while staying connected to friends, family and business colleagues anywhere in the world.

The Sony Ericsson W810 offers the latest in mobile multi-media functionality. The W810 lets you listen to hours of music, capture and send high-resolution images, access the Internet, as well as take advantage of fast data download speeds for games and streaming video and stay connected through instant messaging or email. The latest Walkman phone comes with a 512MB removable Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM), which can be upgraded to a 2GB Memory Stick already available in retail stores, allowing consumers to store a wealth of music tracks, photos, video and other multimedia files on the phone.

Extending the highly acclaimed Sony Ericsson Walkman phone line-up, the stylish black with orange trim W810 advances the mobile music experience by seamlessly blending together entertainment and advanced mobile phone technology to offer a truly credible digital music experience supporting industry standard MP3 and AAC music file formats. The phone comes complete with quality HPM-70 stereo headphones which feature a standard 3.5mm headphone jack for personal customization.

Consumers can easily and quickly load music to the phone by uploading their CD collection on to the W810 from a PC via Memory Stick PRO Duo or USB 2.0 using the provided Disc2Phone music management software. This enclosed PC software makes it easy to sort, browse and transfer files on the 512 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo, which provides capacity for approximately 150 music tracks — the equivalent of around 15 full length CDs.

Enjoying music on the Sony Ericsson W810 Walkman phone is extremely simple because a dedicated Walkman button quickly pulls up the music menu regardless of other applications in use. The most common music controls needed (Play/Pause/Stop/Skip Track/Volume) are positioned just below the phone’s screen which allows people to move easily between tracks or adjust the volume on the speaker or headphones. Engaging Mega Bass(TM) improves the sound experience when listening to music through the external speaker or the high quality headphones provided.

“Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones are redefining how consumers listen and enjoy music. Since the launch of the W800 flagship Walkman (R) phone in August 2005, consumers across the world have been embracing the concept of the mobile phone as a credible digital music player. It is very exciting to see how Walkman phones are allowing people around the world to enjoy high quality music anywhere, anytime,” said Miles Flint, president for Sony Ericsson.

“Like the popular song ‘Born in the USA’, the W810 Walkman phone was specifically designed with the needs of North American operators and consumers in mind, and it is the most advanced Walkman phone to date created for this region,” said Najmi Jarwala, president and head of North American operations, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (USA), Inc. “If the sales of the current Walkman phones are any indication, we are expecting big things for the W810. It is an exciting time to be at Sony Ericsson in North America as we are starting to rapidly roll out innovative designs and feature-rich devices at all price segments for North American consumers.”

The Sony Ericsson W810 features an integrated high-quality 2 megapixel auto-focus camera with photo light. It also features an easily recognizable digital camera-like interface enabling you to capture quality pictures and video.

As with all Walkman phones, your music automatically pauses when an incoming call is received and begins playing again when the call ends. The phone also offers a music-only mode for those occasions when the phone function must be disengaged, such as during air travel.

The W810 is equipped with EDGE technology, to allow quick and easy data transfers and Internet access, and Bluetooth(TM) Wireless technology for connectivity with Bluetooth handsfree headsets and sharing data with other Bluetooth-enabled devices. A range of Walkman phone accessories including speakers and desk stands will also be available.

The Sony Ericsson W810 is a Quad-band EDGE phone available in Satin Black and starts shipping in Spring 2006.

Nokia 6282: High-speed UMTS performance for 3G customers in the Americas

Nokia 6282 phone combines 1 megapixel camera, QVGA display, and sleek slide design with 3G technology

New York, NY, US - As part of its annual Capital Market Days event, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today unveiled one of the industry’s first mobile handsets designed to support 1900MHz UMTS networks expected to go online in the Americas during 2006. In addition to enabling 3G services, the new Nokia 6282 phone features a 2.2 inch, 320×240 pixel QVGA display, a 1 megapixel camera, FM radio, digital music player with hot-swappable miniSD card support, Bluetooth technology and an eye-catching sliding design. The Nokia 6282 phone (GSM 850/1900/1800/UMTS 1900 MHz) is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2006 in markets offering 1900MHz UMTS service.

New UMTS networks supported by the Nokia 6282 phone enable customers to access a number of exciting 3G services. Some of these services include streaming multimedia audio and video content and the rapid upload and download of large files - including downloadable games and video, MP3 or AAC ringtones, or over-the-air synchronization of calendar, contact and to-do information using the built-in SyncML client.

“With the introduction of the Nokia 6282 phone, we are helping to make the promise of high-speed UMTS services in the Americas a reality,” said Kai Oistamo, senior vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “Although it weighs barely 4 ounces, the Nokia 6282 phone is among the most advanced wireless devices available in this market. Without sacrificing size, style or performance, this sleek new device puts a world of possibilities into the hands of consumers in the Americas.”

Featuring the Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition, the Nokia 6282 phone offers users an intuitive way to access the power of this new device. While supporting the latest messaging, browsing, music and video standards, this new interface also takes full advantage of the Nokia 6282 phone’s QVGA display by using an ‘Active Standby Mode’, which allows the idle screen to keep owners informed of calendar and to-do items and to provide quick access to the most-used applications.

The stylish slide design of the Nokia 6282 phone keeps the extra-large display in sight at all times, yet allows it to remain ultra-compact while in the closed position. Additionally, by positioning the imaging controls on the exterior, the Nokia 6282 quickly converts to a conventionally-oriented imaging device that allows 1 megapixel still images and 15 frame-per-second VGA video content to be captured by using the screen as a horizontal viewfinder.
