Novatel’s EV-DO Rev A card available via Verizon Wireless

Novatel's EV-DO Rev A card available via Verizon WirelessNovatel Wireless, Inc. and Verizon Wireless today announced the commercial availability of the V740 ExpressCard(TM). The world’s first ExpressCard to operate on Verizon Wireless’ faster wireless broadband network, based on Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) technology, the V740 offers advanced data speeds and connectivity, lower latency and quick, reliable access to important information. The V740 ExpressCard provides Verizon Wireless customers with access to Verizon Wireless’ flagship business data service, BroadbandAccess, which runs faster and more efficiently on Rev. A technology. Customers in Rev. A coverage areas can take advantage of upload speeds that are eight to nine times faster than that of Verizon Wireless’ existing wireless broadband network, while interacting with Web-based applications with improved latency for a better customer experience. For example, BroadbandAccess customers in enhanced broadband wireless coverage areas using the V740 ExpressCard can expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment - the equivalent of a small PowerPoint presentation or a large PDF file - in about eight seconds and upload the same- sized file in less than 13 seconds. Verizon Wireless customers can download files approximately ten times faster than customers of wireless service providers who use non-EV-DO technology.

The V740 ExpressCard’s small and light form factor is designed for use in mobile computing notebooks that support the ExpressCard 34 and/or 54 interface, as well as USB 2.0, and easily functions with Windows (2000, XP, Vista) and Mac (10.4.8 or higher). The intuitive user interface, via Verizon Wireless’ VZAccess Manager software, is simple to install and allows for convenient navigation through the card’s vast feature suite, in addition to allowing easy access to remote access connections and business applications. The sophisticated dual-band diversity antenna system design incorporates a flip-up antenna, maximizing data speed performance and allowing for stronger network signal reception and the V740 ExpressCard features a dual-color LED service status indicator for data throughput monitoring.

The V740 ExpressCard is available today for $179.99 with a new two-year customer agreement or $229.99 with a new one-year customer agreement online and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores.

Style with substance: tribal art, ethnic decoration define the latest models of Nokia’s L’Amour Collection

Nokia unveils three new mobile phones for the fashion-conscious, including the first 3G fashion phone

Building upon the success of last year’s highly popular L’Amour Collection, Nokia has unveiled three new mobile phones to meet the growing demand by stylish consumers the world over. From the elegantly iconic Nokia 7390, Nokia’s first 3G fashion phone, to the truly desirable Nokia 7373 and the timeless Nokia 7360, each model from the latest L’Amour Collection draws its design inspiration from tribal art and ethnic decoration. The result - a beautifully designed, intelligently considered and exceptionally crafted range of mobile phones, in a palate of colours and textures to meet every desire.

Finding inspiration in the faded luxury of grand architecture, the models from the L’Amour Collection will be appreciated as much for their exotic design as well as their impressive sophisticated set of features. Forms remain modern, round and pure. An earthy palate of colour and traditional materials, updates the bohemian feel of the earlier collection. Aspects of embroidery, 3D appliqué, ceramic tiling and other traditional decoration are refined and modernised through a new craftsmanship - resulting in beautifully embossed leather finishes and graphics which are sublime yet eclectic. Further unexpected combinations enhance the splendour of the L’Amour Collection, as does the mix of traditional handcrafts with cutting edge technology. The collection espouses a ‘nouveau-ethnic’ feel - the muted tonality and bleached colour reflecting fashion’s new and sophisticated way of incorporating decoration.

Nokia 7390: Professional elegance with a modern edge This sleek, elegant fold phone, consummately blends precision technology with groundbreaking design. As Nokia’s first 3G fashion phone, the Nokia 7390 combines exquisite materials and design innovation within a fully featured phone. The 3 megapixel camera and WCDMA high-speed connectivity is subtly hidden within ceramic-inspired shell and leather panels. Ideal for a 24/7 lifestyle, the Nokia 7390 is available in two colours, a Bronze Black version provides a masculine feel, echoing cigar parlours and oak-panelled studies of a by-gone era. The Powder Pink model is a daring combination of ceramic white and powder pink, a colour palate currently found on fashion catwalks and furniture fairs.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7390 is expected to be approximately EUR 450, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 7373: Metropolitan style, fluid form Ethnic patterns and a compact swivel design gives the Nokia 7373 its fresh look and perfect grip. Elaborate tribal markings provide a unique point for contemporary design interpretation, where form and decoration are married seamlessly together. This results in finely tooled surfaces, exquisite detail, embossed finishing and further decoration when the mobile phone is opened, proving that the Nokia 7373 is a veritable treasure chest of reference and culture.

The Nokia 7373 is available in Bronze black, Powder Pink and Black Chrome, with a wide array of complementary graphical themes. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7373 is expected to be approximately EUR 350, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 7360: Subtly styled, elegantly compact The Nokia 7360 is an elegant and compact mobile phone, subtly styled with accents inspired by metal, leather and transparent surfaces. The innovative use of materials gives this mobile phone its unique character, which evokes modern design classics. A tactile inlayed leather effect gently wraps around the phone, meeting smooth ceramic-inspired surfaces and glistening metallic details. The Nokia 7360 comes in two colour options. A chrome and black original that is strong, streamlined and reliable. The Powder Pink girlish, charming and undoubtedly the phone that Lewis Carroll’s Alice would have used had she needed to make a call from Wonderland.

The estimated retail price of the Nokia 7360 is expected to be approximately EUR 200, excluding taxes and subsidies.

The renewed L’Amour Collection is a universal journey of romance, a fusion of technology with traditional craft and a union of ancient art with modern communication. Each model from the L’Amour Collection is expected to begin shipping this fall.

Technical highlights:

Nokia 7390

  • WCDMA (3G) offering high speed streaming, video calling
  • 3 Megapixel camera with autofocus and integrated flash
  • Music player with one-button access

Nokia 7373

  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Music, video player, twin stereo speakers

New BroadbandAccess Connect Service Bundles Tethering Option in Verizon Wireless’ Voice, Data Plans

Verizon Wireless and Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM:)(NASDAQ:TSX:)(NASDAQ:RIM), today introduced the BlackBerry 7130e(TM), the first BlackBerry(R) handset that takes advantage of Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service on the company’s Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. Coupled with Verizon Wireless’ new BroadbandAccess Connect pricing, the BlackBerry 7130e delivers all the popular e-mail and data capabilities available with the BlackBerry wireless platform and can also serve as a modem for customers who want to use the device to connect their laptop with Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service.

With BroadbandAccess Connect, customers can use their BlackBerry 7130e as a modem for downloading large documents to a laptop at speeds averaging 400 to 700 kbps on Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service that covers more than 140 million Americans in 171 major metropolitan markets. BroadbandAccess Connect is available for $15 with any Verizon Wireless BlackBerry voice and unlimited data plan beginning at $79.99; or $30 with the purchase of a BlackBerry data-only plan for $49.99.

“BroadbandAccess is rapidly becoming the standard for wireless connectivity in the business world,” said Bill Stone, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. “BroadbandAccess Connect on the new Blackberry 7130e introduces another option for customers who view office mobility and speed as a competitive advantage in their business.”

“The BlackBerry 7130e together with Verizon Wireless’ fast EV-DO network is a powerful tool for mobile professionals who want the power and productivity benefits of BlackBerry in a sophisticated mobile phone design,” said Don Morrison, chief operating officer at Research In Motion. “The BlackBerry 7130e is an excellent choice for customers looking to upgrade their existing phone with a more powerful handset that combines a full featured phone with industry-leading wireless e-mail and data applications.”

The new BlackBerry 7130e combines comprehensive phone functionality with the renowned BlackBerry platform features, including support for ‘push-based’ wireless e-mail, Web browser, text messaging, personal organizer and other corporate data applications. Seamlessly operating on Verizon Wireless’ NationalAccess 1XRTT and BroadbandAccess EV-DO network technologies, the sleek and stylish BlackBerry 7130e with chrome accents delivers enhanced usability as well as fast Web and data handling in conjunction with Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service on the high speed EV-DO network.

The BlackBerry 7130e handset offers top-of-the-line features such as a large, bright, high resolution LCD screen that has been optimized for indoor and outdoor viewing, Bluetooth(R) support for certain profiles, 64MB of flash memory, dedicated “send” and “end” phone keys, an intuitive user interface as well as excellent battery life.

The BlackBerry 7130e also features SureType(TM) keyboard technology from RIM. Through an integrated keyboard and software system, SureType provides users with an instinctively familiar look and feel and enables them to dial phone numbers and type messages quickly, accurately and comfortably.

For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server(TM) software tightly integrates with Microsoft(R) Exchange, IBM Lotus(R) Domino(TM) and Novell GroupWise(R) and works with existing enterprise systems to enable secure, push-based, wireless access to e-mail and other corporate data. For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Service(TM) allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal e-mail accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and many popular ISP e-mail accounts) from a single device.

These cards, which operate on the 1xRTT Sprint nationwide PCS network when outside of EV-DO service areas, have a suggested retail price of $249.99 less contract credits and instant savings. Sprint plans to introduce EV-DO handsets and applications for consumers and business customers in the fourth quarter. “Satisfying and meeting customer needs for mobile data service is all about having the broadest range of connectivity choices and providing the best overall mobile data experience,” said Len Lauer, president and chief operating officer - Sprint. “The EV-DO service launch increases the ways Sprint customers can connect when mobile and augments a unique remote access service portfolio consisting of the nationwide PCS 1xRTT network and more than 19,000 Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) access points in prime locations. Through network convergence, customers can get all the access solutions they need by harnessing the benefits of Sprint’s diverse wireless networks.” The Sprint EV-DO service provides a broadband-like wireless data experience that is up to 10 times faster than 1xRTT service, with average download speeds of 400-700 kbps and a peak rate of up to 2.0 Mbps. Users can experience faster downloading when accessing the Internet and retrieving e-mails, including large attachments and other bandwidth-intensive applications. The EV-DO service enables improved audio and video capabilities for entertainment services, like streaming TV and music; gaming; video conferencing; and enhanced messaging. The new EV-DO service is expected to fuel additional growth in Sprint’s growing lineup of wireless data services, an area in which Sprint is an industry leader. Wireless data revenue grew 14 percent for Sprint in the first quarter 2005 and represented approximately 10 percent of customer service revenue. “Mobile users are demanding more than just network speed, but want a combined offering that includes a fast, reliable and cost-efficient service with business services and applications that drive value into their businesses,” said Phillip Redman, vice president of Research - Gartner, Inc. “Most companies want a partner that is interested in helping them with the new technology and provide value-added services beyond just being a technology provider.” The high-speed wireless service launch is an outgrowth of ongoing network improvements. Last December, Sprint announced a multi-year commitment of $3 billion dollars for network enhancements, which included the EV-DO service as well as its next generation Release A upgrade. About Sprint Sprint offers an extensive range of innovative communication products and solutions, including global IP, wireless, local and multiproduct bundles. A Fortune 100 company with more than $27 billion in annual revenues in 2004, Sprint is widely recognized for developing, engineering and deploying state- of-the-art network technologies, including the United States’ first nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network; an award-winning Tier 1 Internet backbone; and one of the largest 100-percent digital, nationwide wireless networks in the United States. Motorola Demonstrates Mobile Broadband, VoIP Service on Fully Integrated End-to-End CDMA 1xEV-DO Solution at CTIA Wireless 2005

Live Network Uses Motorola’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to Seamlessly Connect Converged Applications, Multimedia Services on Multiple Devices

CTIA — Motorola, Inc.’s (NYSE:MOT) fully integrated end-to-end CDMA 1xEV-DO solution, coupled with its IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), will give attendees at CTIA Wireless (Mar. 14-16 in New Orleans) a hands-on experience with VoIP calls, mobile broadband applications on a Motorola handset, and web browsing in a home environment.

“Motorola provides a complete end-to-end CDMA 1xEV-DO solution from our all IP-network infrastructure and core to handsets,” said Bruce Stone, senior vice president and general manager of the CDMA Division for Motorola’s Networks. “Multimedia applications like VoIP require tight coupling of the client application, handset, access and the core network. We provide the complete suite of products, fully integrated to enable mobile broadband applications and services.”

With CDMA 1xEV-DO network operators can provide high-speed wireless data and applications to subscribers on the move, delivering content to their mobile handsets, PDAs or laptops, or to residential broadband users seeking multi-media information and entertainment.

The Motorola IMS, based on Motorola’s SoftSwitch technology, gives wireless operators the ability to migrate to fully converged networks that can handle synchronized voice, data, and multimedia applications. Motorola’s IP technology, as the basis for its Push-To-Talk over Cellular and Motorola Softswitch (MSS) products, has been deployed in several large-scale commercial operations that together support more than 2.5 million subscribers. At CTIA multiple types of devices (GSM, CDMA and WiFi) will be used in the demonstrations to illustrate packet to circuit switch calling, one of the many functions made possible by the IMS.

The Motorola IMS is designed to be a robust and highly scalable carrier- grade system that enables convergent VoIP across multiple access domains and open interfaces to third-party applications servers. This convergence will enable a vast array of applications that will enhance personal collaboration, enhanced call management and video services as end-users move among various environments using fixed and mobile devices.

Motorola is showing the products and services mentioned above at CTIA in Hall D, Booth #3145.
