Mobile music, games and TV to generate $34 billion by 2010

Mobile music, games and TV to generate $34 billion by 2010A new report from Juniper Research has found that the combination of greater 3G adoption and a marked increase in rich media, made-for-mobile content will drive mobile entertainment revenues to $47.5 billion by 2010.However, the Juniper report cautions that entertainment service adoption will be retarded unless improvements are made in areas such as the user interface, network coverage and the excessive cost of data services. It also notes that in some mobile areas — such as gambling, adult content and some social networking services — national and international legislation could either adversely impact on growth, or in some cases prevent any service deployment.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, “Traditionally, services such as ringtones and wallpapers accounted for the bulk of mobile entertainment services. However, usage patterns are changing rapidly with the increasing availability of more sophisticated and attractive content such as streamed and broadcast video, social networking services and multiplayer games, which have been designed specifically for the mobile environment.”

Additionally the Juniper report finds that the China and Far East region currently provides the largest market for Mobile Entertainment services and contributes around 41% of global revenues. Despite rapid growth in developing markets, the Asia Pacific region is forecast to retain its leadership through to 2012, when it will still contribute 33% of global revenues.

Juniper Research assesses the current and future status of mobile entertainment market based on interviews, case studies and analysis from representatives of some of the leading organisations in the growing mobile entertainment industry.

apple blue special.jpgAs referenced during the company’s keynote speech at the recent Game Developers’ Conference, Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of games for mobile phones, today confirmed its intention to develop over 15 mobile games built upon Apple’s iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK).Though the SDK was recently released, games will only be available to purchase once the App Store, featuring third party applications that can be downloaded to your device via WiFi or EDGE, launches in June 2008.

Utilizing the SDK package, Gameloft development teams have started to create a strong line-up for 2008. New ARM software enhances graphic displays on mobile phones

New ARM software enhances graphic displays on mobile phonesARM today announced at the Game Developers’ Conference, San Francisco, Calif., the ARM Mali-JSR297(TM) software for 3D graphics, the first product to enable developers of Java applications to take advantage of the latest hardware graphics features found in OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics processing units (GPUs), such as the ARM Mali200(TM) GPU. With the established Mali-JSR184 software (formerly Swerve Client), ARM is uniquely positioned to offer a complete software and hardware graphics stack and is one of the leading suppliers of middleware that enable 3D graphics to be used in Java games. Ericsson Mobile Platforms are the lead Partner for the Mali-JSR297 software, complementing the Mali200 GPU and ARM graphics middleware in the groundbreaking HSPA-enabled mobile platform, U500, bringing console class gaming to 2009 feature phones. With the ARM Mali-JSR297 software, game developers now have complete control over the visual appearance of their games, enabling the creation of graphics displays on mobile phones that are similar to those seen on high-end gaming consoles and PCs. The Mali-JSR297 software demonstrates a leap in graphics quality that meets consumer demands for advanced-content entertainment on mobile phones.

“The expectations of the gaming community continue to increase, which is driving demand for device manufacturers to deliver the next wave of user experience in mobile gaming. The Mali-JSR297 software will provide game developers with the resources they need to bridge the graphics divide among various gaming platforms,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, a leading multimedia and graphics market research firm. “Historically, graphics quality on mobile phones has lagged in comparison to those displayed on a gaming console or computer screens. The software and hardware products that ARM is now offering mean that mobile graphics will now quickly approach the quality of a dedicated games device.”

In order for Java applications to make use of the graphics hardware, handset manufacturers require an efficient software engine that minimizes the number of calculations that Java games need to perform in order to display the graphics. The Mali-JSR297 software builds on ARM’s legacy in graphics solutions and eliminates the risk of integration issues. Furthermore, the new features in the Mali-JSR297 software reside beneath the gaming applications that users download to their phones and open up the full power of OpenGL ES 2.0, the API used in leading games consoles such as the Sony PlayStation 3 and which is supported by the Mali200 GPU. The ARM Mali-JSR297 software empowers developers with the artistic freedom to produce games with more personality, despite limited display size, which previously had not been possible for mobile Java applications.

“One of the biggest challenges facing game developers today is the lack of tools that allow programmers to capitalize on the most powerful graphics hardware in mobile phones,” said David Brittain, vice president of technology, Superscape. “ARM’s graphics portfolio provides optimal compatibility and enables us to speed time-to-market with the games we develop.”

“The majority of today’s mobile phones are using Java technology to enable additional applications and games to be downloaded to the phone after it is sold. ARM is committed to providing solutions for the gaming community that deliver dramatic improvements in the quality of graphics displayed on these applications,” said Gareth Vaughan, graphics product manager, ARM. “ARM’s support for the Java community and graphics ecosystem with products such as the Mali-JSR297 software enables game developers to harness new hardware capabilities, producing 3D graphics that are markedly superior in quality and performance.”

The Mali-JSR297 software is the latest addition to the Mali(TM) graphics stack, a fully integrated set of hardware and software IP that supports all the graphics standards a device manufacturer needs. ARM has further expanded this stack with the recent launch of the Mali-JSR226(TM), Mali-JSR287(TM) and Mali-SVG-t(TM) products for the 2D graphics market at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Please visit http://www.arm.com/news/19869.html for more details.

Availability

The ARM Mali-JSR297 software will be released immediately following ratification of the JSR297 standard, with pre-release versions available from ARM in Q3 2008. For more information about the ARM graphics stack, please visit: http://www.arm.com/products/esd/multimediagraphics_home.html.

Mobile entertainment to be driven by music, games and mobile TV

Mobile entertainment to be driven by music, games and mobile TVMusic, games and mobile TV will be the major contributors to the global mobile entertainment market which will rise from just over $20 billion in 2007 to more than $64 billion by 2012, according to a new report by Juniper Research. Other mobile entertainment sectors include User-generated Content, Gambling, Adult and Infotainment. The report says that mobile music will remain the largest single sector of the mobile entertainment industry over the next five years. Revenues from music will rise from nearly $9 billion in 2007 to $17.5 billion in 2012, bolstered by the increasing availability of full-track download and streamed services, the former in both paid-for and rental formats.

Likewise, mobile games will retain its second-ranking in terms of end-user generated revenues: boosted by rapid growth in mass market “casual” gaming, revenues are expected to rise from just under $5 billion in 2007 to nearly $16 billion in 2012.

Meanwhile, strong growth is also expected from mobile TV, with many developed (and some emerging) markets launching dedicated mobile broadcast networks within the forecast period. This, plus increased adoption of streamed TV bouquets, should see the market rise from $1.4 billion in 2007 to $11.9 billion in 2012.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, “With revenues from voice services declining and messaging revenues flatlining, last year finally saw a number of more sophisticated entertainment services begin to fulfil their potential and redress the balance. With more widespread penetration of 3G handsets — or entertainment-focused 2.5G handsets like the iPhone — there is likely to be a much greater surge in both the adoption and overall usage in rich media services.”

Other findings from the Juniper report include:

*Regulations and prohibitions will limit opportunities in the adult and gambling sectors, although Juniper Research envisages that restrictions on gambling services in the key US market will ease in the medium term

*China and the Far East will remain the largest regional market for mobile entertainment throughout the period covered by the report, with revenues rising from $8.5bn in 2007 to nearly $21.3bn by 2012

*Entertainment service adoption remains constrained by difficulties with the user interface, network speed and coverage and the excessive cost of data services

Juniper Research assesses the current and future status of the mobile entertainment markets based on interviews, case studies and analysis from representatives of some of the leading organisations in the growing mobile entertainment industry.

Mobile game revenue hits $151 million Q4 2006 in U.S

Mobile game revenue hits $151 million Q4 2006 in U.SOn-portal mobile game revenue jumped 61 percent year-over-year to $151 million in Q4 2006. Nearly 17.4 million mobile consumers downloaded a mobile game last quarter, up 45 percent from a total of 12 million downloaders a year ago, according to Telephia, the world’s largest provider of syndicated consumer research to the telecom and mobile media markets. On-portal mobile game revenues also account for 74 percent of total mobile game revenues, while off-portal downloads account for the remaining 26 percent. While revenue is growing, revenue growth is slowing consistent with a market that is maturing. Mobile games have not been limited to the typical console game demographic of men 18-24 years old. The demographic is much broader, and includes women and all ages. Sixty-five percent of all games are purchased by women. Forty percent of all games are purchased by mobile consumers age 25-36.

“The mobile game industry has seen strong growth very quickly with titles that appeal to a broad demographic. However, the industry is faced with a new challenge in order to sustain its growth. Several new mobile content services such as mobile video and full-track music are also competing for the mobile consumers’ attention and wallet,” said Kanishka Agarwal, Vice President of Mobile Content, Telephia.

The mobile game market continues to be a highly competitive space, with nearly 90 publishers vying for a piece of the market. EA Mobile leads the on-portal game download market with nearly 28 percent of total revenue. Gameloft and Glu Mobile share the second tier with 11 percent each. Namco, I-play, Digital Chocolate, Hands-On Mobile, Superscape, Capcom and Oasys Mobile make up the next tier of players with revenue shares ranging from 2-6 percent.

Using Preloads as a Merchandizing Lever

As the mobile game market gets more crowded, publishers are keen on finding new solutions to get a leg up on their competition. Top placement on carrier download decks is a hard-fought battle among publishers and a lot of emphasis is focused on that strategy. But preloading a game onto devices is another critical merchandizing lever. As part of Telephias new Mobile Game Merchandizing product, the company will be tracking preloaded game decks. Preliminary Telephia findings are consistent with industry consensus that Tetris by EA Mobile is the most preloaded title in the U.S.

“Preloaded game demos provide consumers with easy access and a quick sample of the game title, increasing the likelihood of them purchasing the game and ultimately driving revenues for the publishers. Publishers must focus effort on handset preload decks in addition to carrier download decks as a critical merchandizing tool,” added Agarwal.

Nokia reveals new games, publishers and tools for its mobile gaming platforms

Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications, today announced the latest games and publishers for its new N-Gage mobile gaming platform. Updated software development tools for the N-Gage platform and a new testing program for SNAP Mobile’s JavaTM platform were also introduced today at the conference. These new developments will help bring fun to play connected mobile gaming experiences to millions of Nokia mobile device owners worldwide.

“We are reinforcing our commitment to this industry with two significant initiatives that will help the mobile games industry evolve. Our N-Gage platform will deliver a global games platform that leverages the performance of the tens of millions of S60 converged devices that we are shipping each year,” said Gregg Sauter, Director of Games Publishing, Nokia. “Likewise, our support for Java development continues to evolve with more tools for developers supporting SNAP Mobile.”
Sauter will expand on these new developments with a speech at the GDC Mobile sponsored lunch keynote session on Monday 5th March at 1.00pm in Room 134 in the North Hall, Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. The session, titled ‘The next generation of the N-Gage platform’ will also be available at http://www.forum.nokia.com/gdc and http://www.forum.nokia.com/games later in the week.
New game titles and brands
Nokia introduced a range of games for the new mobile gaming platform including Gameloft’s Asphalt 3, Street Rules, Brothers In Arms, Hell’s Highway, Brain Challenge, Midnight Pool and EA Mobile’s FIFA 2008.
New games publishers on board
Games publishers Glu Mobile, Indiagames and THQ Wireless will be publishing a selection of mobile games and content for the N-Gage games platform. The first Glu title for the platform will be World Series of Poker® Texas Hold’em (WSOP), which allows players to compete at tables with up to eight mobile gamers against WSOP champions such as Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Scott Fischman.
Latest tools to develop next generation mobile content
Nokia also launched its next generation software development kit (SDK 1.0) for the new N-Gage games platform, which enables developers to focus on one code-base to create social connected games across a range of Nokia S60 3rd edition devices. The new N-Gage Zone provides all the tools, documentation, support and updates required to successfully develop games for the N-Gage games platform.
“The availability of the N-Gage SDK 1.0 today is the corner stone of Nokia’s new development eco-system for developers to create connected mobile games in a familiar C++ environment,” said Mark Ollila, Director of Technology & Strategy and Nokia Games Publishing, Nokia. “This single development channel impacts positively on development cycles and budgeting as well as creating new social connected gaming experiences that will lead the way to how people discover, buy and play games in the future.”

New testing program from SNAP Mobile
Nokia furthers its Java(TM) development activities by ensuring all SNAP Mobile connected games offer a consistent game-playing experience with the SNAP Mobile Compliance Testing Program, announced today. This program limits costs by combining a self-testing process with a traditional certification program. It also lowers the barrier of entry to this process and enables growth of high-quality game development by publishers and developers who have signed up for the SNAP Mobile Platform.
During GDC, SNAP Mobile and Forum Nokia will reveal the winners of the Nokia and SingTel Multiplayer Game Quest. Launched in June 2006, this multiplayer Java(TM) game development contest on the SNAP Mobile platform encouraged Forum Nokia PRO developers worldwide to develop multiplayer and cross-platform games for Java-enabled devices in one of three categories: cross-platform games, multiplayer games for males, and multiplayer games for females. Winners will receive cash awards, Nokia devices and promotion for their games from Nokia and SingTel Mobile. For more information, visit http://www.fnpro-apac.com/.

TI and Ideaworks3D simplify development of advanced gaming for mobile handsets

Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) and Ideaworks3D are extending the capabilities of the OMAP(TM) Gaming Platform to support the OpenKODE 1.0 specification, addressing a wider market targeting feature phones to high-end multimedia handsets. This platform will be one of the first in the industry to incorporate the OpenKODE Khronos Open Development Environment to further simplify the development and deployment of new games across multiple mobile phone segments, creating a larger market opportunity for game publishers. To enable developers to address the broadest possible market, the gaming platform has been expanded to include TI’s OMAP2 and OMAP-Vox(TM) product families. Additionally, the offering spans both accelerated and non- accelerated 3D graphics solutions using a common development and deployment environment through Ideaworks3D’s Airplay(TM) software.

The Ideaworks3D Airplay SDK is optimized to take advantage of TI’s OMAP2430 and OMAPV1030 processor capabilities, while maintaining cross- platform portability. The SDK on TI’s OMAP2430 processor takes advantage of hardware-enabled 3D graphics to provide a premium gaming experience. The Airplay SDK on TI’s OMAPV1030 processor utilizes software graphics renderers to enable compelling casual games for the feature phone market. Both platforms exceed the performance guidelines being defined in a mobile gaming white paper currently under development by the Open Mobile Alliance(TM) Games Services working group. The platform will scale to support future standards such as OpenGL ES 2.0 with TI’s OMAP 3 product family.

“Game developers will see dramatic reductions in development costs by utilizing the TI and Ideaworks3D gaming platform,” said Alex Caccia, CEO, Ideaworks3D. “We have found that game developers can achieve up to 60 percent cost savings for development and porting of mobile games using Airplay SDK on TI’s OMAP and OMAP-Vox platforms.”

One of the most significant benefits of the TI and Ideaworks3D solution is that it changes the current mobile gaming development process by allowing developers to create one game binary which runs on leading open operating systems, including Symbian OS(TM), Linux and Microsoft Windows Mobile. This enables the same code to run on a range of handsets with performance on par with other native applications.

“Support for open standards including OpenKODE, OpenGL ES and the OMA mobile gaming white paper is important to advance the development of mobile games,” said Avner Goren, marketing director of Texas Instruments Cellular Systems Solutions. “We view these open standards as vital to the success of the mobile gaming market and TI will continue to enhance the mobile gaming platform with Ideaworks3D to help developers quickly deliver new and compelling games to market.”

For handset manufacturers and operators there are distinct benefits to using the combined TI and Ideaworks3D gaming platform. This includes a reduction in porting costs and development time, as well as enabling the development of higher quality games that can be used on a broader range of handsets. Due to the portability benefits of the gaming platform, handset manufacturers can instantly tap into a larger catalog of mobile games by integrating the Airplay SDK into their products, rather than porting and validating games on each new handset. For operators, the Airplay SDK allows premium native games to be delivered to handsets using their existing Java- based content delivery platforms. The robust security mechanisms provided by TI’s M-Shield(TM) technology ensures that platform security is maintained when installing premium native games.

At the Game Developers Conference, March 5-8, TI and Ideaworks3D will be demonstrating the scalability of the Airplay SDK on TI’s OMAP 2 and OMAP-Vox platforms in the Khronos booth 160 WH, 260 WH.
