This has dropped well over 10 share points as of 2Q09. Over that same time period, Apple has significantly increased market share, as did RIM. Wi-Fi handset shipments have increased significantly over the past several years. From 2007 to 2008, shipments increased by over 50%. This growth is a result from increased phone functionality, falling price points, and carrier promotion. “While the enterprise was the original smartphone/Wi-Fi ...

A further 40% would choose a green handset over a conventional one if price, features, and performance were equal.

“These survey results mean that almost half of those surveyed were at least committed in principle to use of a green handset,” comments industry analyst Michael Morgan. “However the public is largely uninformed about their availability: only 4% said they were ‘very familiar’ with green handsets.”

Is that ...

Has AT&T Bailed on Motorola’s Android Phones?

"When Motorola announces its new Android handsets at a scheduled Sept. 10 event in San Francisco, AT&T isn’t likely to be among their carriers. Sources close to the company tell MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen that AT&T balked at Motorola’s Sawgrass and Heron handsets. Allegedly because of their dated display technology, the company has chosen not to carry them. That’s bad news for Motorola (MOT), which pinned its hopes of a turnaround on Google’s (GOOG) Android OS."

With the latter date fast approaching, ABI Research analysts have confirmed that a similar pattern will hold true – or even accelerate – for the period 2009-2011. This year is on track to see 144 million handsets shipped, with forecasts for 2011 at just over 300 million. “Wi-Fi’s penetration into handsets has more momentum than the bad economy,” says industry analyst Michael Morgan. “It has become a must-have item much as Bluetooth did earlier. But just having Wi-Fi ...

Consumer handset demand polarizing

New research has shown how the mobile handset market is becoming increasingly polarised between low cost handsets for emerging markets and high-end smartphones for developed regions – with the mid-range handset market being squeezed. Low-cost handsets and Smartphones will together account for almost 79% of all new mobile phones by 2014, or just over 1 billion units in all. Operators and vendors are preparing to deal with a massive influx of new users from low-income socio-economic groups in developing markets and a rising demand for complex ‘smart’ devices from affluent users in developed markets.
