Nokia reveals new games, publishers and tools for its mobile gaming platforms

Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications, today announced the latest games and publishers for its new N-Gage mobile gaming platform. Updated software development tools for the N-Gage platform and a new testing program for SNAP Mobile’s JavaTM platform were also introduced today at the conference. These new developments will help bring fun to play connected mobile gaming experiences to millions of Nokia mobile device owners worldwide.

“We are reinforcing our commitment to this industry with two significant initiatives that will help the mobile games industry evolve. Our N-Gage platform will deliver a global games platform that leverages the performance of the tens of millions of S60 converged devices that we are shipping each year,” said Gregg Sauter, Director of Games Publishing, Nokia. “Likewise, our support for Java development continues to evolve with more tools for developers supporting SNAP Mobile.”
Sauter will expand on these new developments with a speech at the GDC Mobile sponsored lunch keynote session on Monday 5th March at 1.00pm in Room 134 in the North Hall, Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. The session, titled ‘The next generation of the N-Gage platform’ will also be available at http://www.forum.nokia.com/gdc and http://www.forum.nokia.com/games later in the week.
New game titles and brands
Nokia introduced a range of games for the new mobile gaming platform including Gameloft’s Asphalt 3, Street Rules, Brothers In Arms, Hell’s Highway, Brain Challenge, Midnight Pool and EA Mobile’s FIFA 2008.
New games publishers on board
Games publishers Glu Mobile, Indiagames and THQ Wireless will be publishing a selection of mobile games and content for the N-Gage games platform. The first Glu title for the platform will be World Series of Poker® Texas Hold’em (WSOP), which allows players to compete at tables with up to eight mobile gamers against WSOP champions such as Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Scott Fischman.
Latest tools to develop next generation mobile content
Nokia also launched its next generation software development kit (SDK 1.0) for the new N-Gage games platform, which enables developers to focus on one code-base to create social connected games across a range of Nokia S60 3rd edition devices. The new N-Gage Zone provides all the tools, documentation, support and updates required to successfully develop games for the N-Gage games platform.
“The availability of the N-Gage SDK 1.0 today is the corner stone of Nokia’s new development eco-system for developers to create connected mobile games in a familiar C++ environment,” said Mark Ollila, Director of Technology & Strategy and Nokia Games Publishing, Nokia. “This single development channel impacts positively on development cycles and budgeting as well as creating new social connected gaming experiences that will lead the way to how people discover, buy and play games in the future.”

New testing program from SNAP Mobile
Nokia furthers its Java(TM) development activities by ensuring all SNAP Mobile connected games offer a consistent game-playing experience with the SNAP Mobile Compliance Testing Program, announced today. This program limits costs by combining a self-testing process with a traditional certification program. It also lowers the barrier of entry to this process and enables growth of high-quality game development by publishers and developers who have signed up for the SNAP Mobile Platform.
During GDC, SNAP Mobile and Forum Nokia will reveal the winners of the Nokia and SingTel Multiplayer Game Quest. Launched in June 2006, this multiplayer Java(TM) game development contest on the SNAP Mobile platform encouraged Forum Nokia PRO developers worldwide to develop multiplayer and cross-platform games for Java-enabled devices in one of three categories: cross-platform games, multiplayer games for males, and multiplayer games for females. Winners will receive cash awards, Nokia devices and promotion for their games from Nokia and SingTel Mobile. For more information, visit http://www.fnpro-apac.com/.

Classic strategy title Civilization cultivates new ground as it ships on the N-Gage platform

Nokia today announced that it has shipped Civilization(TM) the classic empire-building strategy game from Atari. Recognized as one of the greatest games of all time, fans of the franchise will now have the chance to revisit Civilization anytime, anywhere.

Combining an addictive blend of building, exploration, discovery and conquests, Civilization allows players to pit their wits against some of the greatest leaders in history as they strive to build the ultimate civilization.

From humble beginnings in less than comfortable surroundings like mud huts, players will have the chance to build their wealth, influence and diplomatic profile as they move through the game. Gamers are tasked with a mission to create the most powerful culture on the planet by means of eliminating all other civilizations or via the Space race option - the choice is theirs.

“The addition of Sid Meier’s strategy masterpiece to the N-Gage games catalogue creates a brand new way in which Civilization fans can enjoy this classic title,” said Gregg Sauter, director, games publishing, Nokia.

The legacy of one of history’s most popular strategy games continues on the N-Gage platform.

“Get Ready!” Go Old School Anytime, Anywhere With Atari Masterpieces Volume 2 on the N-Gage Platform

Nokia Today Unveils Atari Masterpieces Volume 2, the Latest Catalogue of Classic Atari Arcade Games for the N-Gage Platform

Atari Masterpieces Volume 2 brings eight of the most popular original Atari arcade-games to the N-Gage world, including Asteroids Deluxe, Crystal Castles, Centipede, Liberator, Pong, Space Duel, Tempest and Warlords. Additional features include four bonus unlockable Atari 2600 titles, including 2600 Air-Sea Battle, 2600 Canyon Bomber, 2600 Mini-Golf and 2600 Video Checkers.

“We’ve teamed up with Backbone Entertainment, creators of RIFTS(R): Promise of Power TM and Shadow-Born to create Atari Masterpieces Volume 2, the second heritage-rich Atari games compilation compiled for the N-Gage - the gamers phone,” said Gregg Sauter, Director, Games Publishing, Nokia. “These games play virtually identically to the originals, but with an N-Gage twist; gamers can upload their high-score onto the N-Gage Arena for new century bragging rights and, as an added bonus, two people can play on one N-Gage together, using the Hot Seat function.”

Atari Masterpieces Volume 2 for the N-Gage will start shipping in March 2006.

About the games:
Asteroids Deluxe: The sequel to Asteroids in 1981. Asteroids Deluxe added new enemies and a powerful shield button, when players experienced difficulties.

Centipede: Centipede pitted players against a never ending barrage of spiders, fleas, scorpions and of course, centipedes as they tried to fill the screen with mushrooms. The game’s fast paced action made it an instant classic.

Crystal Castles: Crystal Castles was one of the most beautiful and puzzling games ever made. Players took control of Bentley Bear as he explored mazes, trying to collect gems without being caught by his enemies.

Liberator: Liberator is one of the rarer arcade games in the Atari line-up - fewer than 800 arcade cabinets were produced. The game has been described as Missile Command(R) in reverse!

Pong: The game that started it all. Legend goes that the original prototype of the game was tested in a tavern in Sunnyvale, California, and used a bread pan as its coin collector.

Space Duel: The only multi-player vector game ever released by Atari - Space Duel first hit arcades in early 1982. Its mix of fast action, Asteroids style play and bright colors quickly made it a cult hit.

Tempest: Tempest was one of the most abstract, but addictive games to ever hit the arcade. Originally trying to build a 3D version of another common Arcade game, it took a bad dream to deliver the idea of plummeting down into the levels instead of the other way around.

Warlords: Warlords first hit arcades in 1980 and launched a multi-player revolution. Warlords allowed players to catch a flaming ball and sling it at the castles of their foes.

Nokia announces launch date of intergalactic alien adventure “Space Alliance”

Massively multiplayer sci-fi action game to hit Java phones in Q1 2006 through the Nokia SNAP Mobile service

Nokia, the leader in mobile communications, announced that in the first quarter of next year, hundreds of thousands of players can expect to be able to connect through “Space Alliance,” a massively multi-player online game (MMOG) available on selected Java technology-enabled mobile phones through the Nokia SNAP Mobile service. Announced earlier this year at E3 as “Space Shooter,” “Space Alliance” tasks humans with defending themselves from a massively coordinated alien attack. Gamers can go at it alone or build an online team of fellow pilots to destroy these vile creatures and save the human race.

“To really play upon the community aspect that accompanies all Nokia SNAP Mobile titles, we decided to pit gamers against the bad guys in ‘Space Alliance,’ rather than against each other,” said Lisa Waits, head of Nokia SNAP Mobile. “By giving gamers the opportunity to form alliances, we’re giving new meaning to the type of comraderie possible in massively multi-player arenas.”

“Space Alliance,” developed by Monkey Business, is a 3D space shooter game where players take part in a massively co-operative persistent online intergalactic war. Players work together to annihilate alien forces, construct new starbases and fighter factories, build automated defenses, and respond to other players’ distress signals. A live moderator provides mid- to long-term strategy for the alien fleets, and can add new elements to a game in play to keep the players busy or to assist them. The moderator also maintains an online “blog” that includes information on the history of the galaxy, and what has taken place prior to the alien attack. Like other titles developed for Nokia SNAP Mobile, “Space Alliance” offers friends list and chat, but also includes score reporting, leader boards and community news boards.

“The game is action packed enough to be played solo, but working as a team offers gamers the sense they are contributing to the greater good,” said Burt Sloane, ‘Top Banana’ at Monkey Business. “Think about it - we all love to cheer for the home team - so what better way to evoke that same emotion in a mobile game than to offer players the chance to join forces? If collaboration isn’t the best definition of community gameplay, I’m not sure what is.”

All of the online Java games created for the Nokia SNAP Mobile platform are supported by both Nokia and non-Nokia phones. Space Alliance is expected to be available in Q1 2006. To download screen shots and game information, go to www.extranet.n-gage.com. For more on the Nokia SNAP Mobile service, please visit www.snapmobile.nokia.com.
