Nokia today unveiled a trio of mobile devices that balance stunning and sophisticated looks with the latest in mobile functionality. All three devices, the Nokia 6600 fold, the Nokia 6600 slide and the Nokia 3600 slide present a smooth, minimalist design and an appealing array of easy-to-use features. The devices range in price from 175 EUR to 275 EUR before taxes and subsidies and are expected to start shipping during the third quarter of 2008.”There is a strong consumer demand for mobile handsets that blend elegant looks with modern features,” said Mikkel Drucker, Director, Connect Devices. “Each of the three devices introduced today offers a slightly different take on a core design language. We believe they are both beautiful to use and beautiful to behold - and offer a range of choice.”
The worldwide mobile phone market experienced an expected sequential downturn in shipments following a busy holiday quarter. According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 291.6 million units during the first quarter of 2008 (1Q08), down 11.6% from the 330.8 million units shipped during the previous quarter (4Q07) and up 14.3% from the 255.0 million units shipped during 1Q07. While the first quarter results are in line with IDC’s 2008 forecast, concerns over the economy may negatively impact handset purchases as the year progresses.”The mobile phone market will be under increased pressure from a number of factors that compete for users’ attention and wallets,” said Ramon T. Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Device Technology and Trends team. “Disposable income is being eroded by rising food and fuel prices and worries about global financial markets and slow economic growth are creating a cautious outlook for the months ahead. Against this backdrop, many emerging markets continue to offer tremendous growth potential and IDC expects highly competitive pricing and innovative service plans will keep the overall market on track for the year.”

In five years, I believe we will be watching films in movie theaters that have been shot on a mobile phone,” said Spike Lee, director for Nokia Productions. “Today, with state-of-the-art multimedia devices like what Nokia has to offer, you are seeing first hand the democratization of film. Aspiring filmmakers no longer have to go to film school to make great work. With a simple mobile phone, almost anyone can now become a filmmaker.”

At the Growing Together 2008 conference held today in Johannesburg, Nokia revealed new products that accelerate the company’s leadership in emerging markets. Also introduced today was a local mobile email solution exclusively for people in South Africa. Highlighted by the Nokia 5000, which offers a 1.3 megapixel camera and a large QVGA display - Nokia’s first megapixel cameraphone at this price point - as well as music and email capabilities, each new product brings a balance of features, design and affordability to meet every lifestyle and budget. The new mobile devices are expected to begin shipping by the third quarter, with an expected price range from EUR 50 to EUR 90, before applicable taxes or subsidies. With the industry’s largest portfolio of mobile phones and support for more than 80 languages, more than one billion people worldwide currently use a Nokia device. In recent years, the majority of first-time buyers have come from the emerging markets. However, a significant shift is underway - while the first-time buyer market continues to grow, the number of replacement buyers- consumers seeking to replace their current mobile phone with a newer, more advanced model - has also grown substantially in emerging markets. In 2008, Nokia anticipates that for the first time, the number of replacement purchases in emerging markets will exceed those of first-time buyers.
n new growth markets particularly, where mobile networks are expanding into rural areas, advanced infrastructure such as a power grid is not always reliable or readily available and base station sites need to run autonomously. A sustainable alternative is to use renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.Traditionally, the energy used to operate these sites has come from diesel generators that not only create CO2 and other harmful emissions, but also require regular re-fuelling and skilled maintenance work, which leads to additional travel and maintenance costs for the operator. Most importantly, the cost of diesel is high and is expected to rise in the future.
The market for smartphones will grow from around 10% of the total handset market in 2007 to 31% of the market in 2013. A new study from ABI Research projects this meteoric growth to be a product of a number of complex factors including carriers’ drives to grow data revenues from advanced services and the general trend to pushing “smart” operating systems down into middle tier devices.ABI Research vice president Stuart Carlaw comments, “Smart operating systems are continually being optimized to run on processors with lower performance. There is a strategic move to support smart OSes in single chip midrange devices in order to unlock more data revenues.” Carlaw adds that, “The market is currently dominated by Nokia (52%) and Symbian (65%). However, the coalescence of the framework wars in the Linux environment and the growing stature of Windows Mobile will enable new competitors to put pressure on this established axis.”
