Swisscom launches Bluewin TV mobile

Swisscom launches Bluewin TV mobile Swisscom has launched its mobile television service, Bluewin TV mobile, in Switzerland to become one of the first European providers to offer high-quality television experience to its mobile customers. Working together, Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks enabled this service with their leading-edge mobile TV technology, services and expertise.Bluewin TV mobile was launched on May 13 with quality comparable to that of the customers — home TV. The service is made available through a network based on the Digital Video Broadcast for Handheld (DVB-H) standard and can be watched on DVB-H-enabled mobile devices. Swisscom provides its customers with a range of subscription plans and Nokia N77 devices.

For this project, Swisscom’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Swisscom Broadcast chose Nokia’s Mobile Broadcast Solution, while Nokia Siemens Networks integrated the mobile television platform with Swisscom’s systems and provided a broad range of services, including project management, network and architecture planning, security and implementation.

“With the time constraints of the project, it was essential for Swisscom Broadcast to rely on one partner offering a solution based on open standards which can guarantee the end-to-end interoperability of the whole solution, from the DVB-H back-end system to the mobile devices” says Olivier Anthamatten, Head of Strategic Projects at Swisscom Broadcast.

With Bluewin TV mobile, featuring high-definition picture quality and excellent sound, the viewers have a choice of 20 channels, including SF1, TSR1 and Eurosport. An electronic program guide and an easy navigation key allow people on the move to always stay on top of the news.

Swisscom is one of the first DVB-H service providers in Europe and worldwide. Bluewin TV mobile marks a further step in the Group’s multimedia strategy and offers customers on the move the same viewing experience as with their TV at home.

Swisscom’s DVB-H broadcasts reach some 44 percent of the Swiss population, mostly in the area of Basel, Berne, Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne. Customers outside the DVB-H coverage area or without DVB-H handsets can receive Bluewin TV mobile on the Vodafone live! portal using UMTS/EDGE, which covers 99.8 percent of the population.

The solutions offered by Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks are based on the open DVB-H standard. They allow short implementation time as well as end-to-end capability, combining the equipment, services and devices to create a unique solution for mobile TV service providers, covering both mobile TV broadcast and 3G streaming (unicast). Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks work with more than 30 operators worldwide on DVB-H implementations. Commercial launches include Finland, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and most recently Indonesia. The European Union has selected DVB-H as the definitive technology for digital and mobile broadcasting.

World’s fastest I-HSPA call demo’d

World's fastest I-HSPA call demo'd Testing the capabilities of the new flat network architecture, mobilkom austria has demonstrated the world’s fastest data call with a mobile device using the pioneering Internet High Speed Packet Access (I-HSPA) solution from Nokia Siemens Networks. During the trial, the data transmission downlink speed reached up to 10.1 Mbps. The I-HSPA trial with mobilkom austria, the country’s leading mobile operator, marks another milestone for Nokia Siemens Networks in enabling top-quality 3G mobile multimedia and data services to a rapidly growing number of users in a cost-efficient manner. The I-HSPA functionality is designed for heavy data and rich multimedia usage over the wireless network. Thanks to its simplified flat architecture, the network is ready to offer the end user a full mobility of data services, improved multimedia, gaming, web browsing and email service experience. In near future, I-HSPA will be capable for data transmission rates over 10.1 Mbps.

The innovative solution also complies with the future network technology known as Long Term Evolution (LTE), supporting data rates of up to 173 Mbps. In addition to the world’s fastest I-HSPA call, Nokia Siemens Networks also demonstrated its LTE solution for the first time in Austria.

“These new technologies will offer higher data transmission rates to our customers, making it easy to use broadband multimedia services while shortening the latency rates. For us as a network operator, these technologies, with their flat architecture, offer the possibility to expand our network with more slender investments,” said Boris Nemsic, CEO mobilkom austria und CEO Telekom Austria Group. “The evolution from GPRS via UMTS and HSPA towards LTE is a consequent line in our complementary network strategy.”

Being the leading provider of mobile broadband solutions, Nokia Siemens Networks also is the driver of the related standardization processes, like 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Program) standard that provides specifications for the third generation (3G) mobile phone system.

“It is exciting to demonstrate our I-HSPA capabilities together with our partner mobilkom austria, who always has been a network operator living the technological leadership claim. I am proud to be able to prove that the future technologies are within our reach here today with the worldwide fastest I-HSPA call,” said Dietmar Appeltauer, in charge of Nokia Siemens Networks business in Central Eastern Europe.

I-HSPA innovation by Nokia Siemens Networks introduces a flat network architecture to the 3G networks based on Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) technology by connecting the base station directly to the Internet and enables cost-efficient scaling of the network. It works with all HSPA devices and improves end user experience by reducing latency. I-HSPA flat network architecture also enables smooth migration to LTE.

Nokia Unveils Three New Handsets

Nokia Unveils Three New Handsets Nokia today unveiled a trio of mobile devices that balance stunning and sophisticated looks with the latest in mobile functionality. All three devices, the Nokia 6600 fold, the Nokia 6600 slide and the Nokia 3600 slide present a smooth, minimalist design and an appealing array of easy-to-use features. The devices range in price from 175 EUR to 275 EUR before taxes and subsidies and are expected to start shipping during the third quarter of 2008.”There is a strong consumer demand for mobile handsets that blend elegant looks with modern features,” said Mikkel Drucker, Director, Connect Devices. “Each of the three devices introduced today offers a slightly different take on a core design language. We believe they are both beautiful to use and beautiful to behold - and offer a range of choice.”

Nokia 6600 fold - Smart and sophisticated looks

With one touch of a button, the elegant Nokia 6600 fold smoothly opens to reveal a stunningly bright 2.13″ OLED screen displaying up to 16 million colors. With its seamless design, the signature “smooth back” of the Nokia 6600 fold creates a comfortable contour when open, and remains subtle and compact when closed. The high-gloss surface of the Nokia 6600 fold comes to life when tapped twice to “wake up” the hidden outer display that reveals time, incoming messages, missed calls and more. A double tap on the Nokia 6600 fold also snoozes alerts and silences or rejects incoming phone calls.

With a set of contemporary mobile features that belie its compact size, the Nokia 6600 fold is proof positive that beauty can be far more than skin deep. 3G technology allows for fast and easy sharing of pictures and videos snapped with the integrated 2 megapixel camera with double LED flash or swift access to Internet services such as Yahoo! Go or Flickr.

The Nokia 6600 fold easily fits into a pocket or a handbag and has an estimated retail price of 275 EUR excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 6600 slide - Compact and balanced

Being one of Nokia’s smallest sliders to date, the Nokia 6600 slide stays true to its name as it smoothly glides open in the hand. The appearance of the Nokia 6600 slide with its glossy, high-quality steel covers and aluminium center key constitute both understated elegance as well as visual simplicity. Its well-balanced feature set is created to be exciting and intuitive. Tapping the Nokia 6600 slide twice conveniently indicates time, snoozes, alerts and silences or rejects incoming phone calls.

The 3.2 megapixel camera takes high quality pictures and videos that can be shared with others via Internet services or multimedia message - directly from the photo menu. The large 2.2″ QVGA display with 16 million colors also makes it easy to find your way around town, thanks to the integrated Nokia Maps application which can be enhanced with an optional Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W and separate navigation license. The slim, lightweight Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W features an innovative design that takes Bluetooth navigation beyond the car and into the hands of urban trekkers and leisure travelers.

The Nokia 6600 slide has an estimated retail price of 250 EUR excluding taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 3600 slide - Contemporary combination

The Nokia 3600 slide aims to win hearts with a blend of tasteful colors, materials and tactile finishes, and minds with a full range of the latest features. Soft ceramic paint and metal combined with high gloss surfaces and gradated colors to make the Nokia 3600 slide beautiful to both touch and see. The Nokia 3600 slide is equally beautiful to hear as it is the first Nokia product to feature background noise cancellation. With a built-in music player the Nokia 3600 slide offers up to 3000 favorite songs on an optional 4 microSD card.

The small, ergonomically shaped Nokia 3600 slide also delivers a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and 2 LED flash and is excellent for taking pictures or videos, even in dim lighting conditions. The TV-out feature, which conveniently connects the Nokia 3600 slide to most television sets, ensures quick and easy sharing of pictures and videos.

While the beauty of the Nokia 3600 slide will tell the world about its owner, the pre-installed Nokia Maps application with an optional Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W will tell the owner a lot about the world they are in. The Nokia Maps application holds more than 15 million points of interests, including restaurants, shops, hotels and more.

The Nokia 3600 slide has an estimated retail price of 175 EUR excluding taxes and subsidies.

Complementing the three handsets launched today, the new Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-803 echos the classic style of the handsets with a sleek design and stainless steel details. An optional ear loop makes it comfortable to wear, while the exceptional voice quality, touch sensitive volume control and voice dialling activation make for easy use of the Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-803.

Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Grows 14.3%

Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Grows 14.3% The worldwide mobile phone market experienced an expected sequential downturn in shipments following a busy holiday quarter. According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 291.6 million units during the first quarter of 2008 (1Q08), down 11.6% from the 330.8 million units shipped during the previous quarter (4Q07) and up 14.3% from the 255.0 million units shipped during 1Q07. While the first quarter results are in line with IDC’s 2008 forecast, concerns over the economy may negatively impact handset purchases as the year progresses.”The mobile phone market will be under increased pressure from a number of factors that compete for users’ attention and wallets,” said Ramon T. Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Device Technology and Trends team. “Disposable income is being eroded by rising food and fuel prices and worries about global financial markets and slow economic growth are creating a cautious outlook for the months ahead. Against this backdrop, many emerging markets continue to offer tremendous growth potential and IDC expects highly competitive pricing and innovative service plans will keep the overall market on track for the year.”

Demand for handsets in the low cost segment will remain present in certain emerging markets throughout 2008, driving worldwide shipment growth. In contrast, more mature regions are increasingly characterized by highly competitive markets for replacement handsets and somewhat slower shipment growth.

“As predicted, most mobile phone vendors experienced a lull in the first quarter of 2008 with the exception of LG,” said Ryan Reith, senior research analyst for IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. “Continued growth in the low cost segment will mean average selling prices (ASPs) will be generally lower than in the past, but this will be balanced somewhat by further expansion in the converged mobile device or smartphone segment, especially in mature markets.”

Top Five Vendors

Nokia once again outperformed its competitors, with total shipment volumes greater than those of the next three vendors’ combined. Keeping volumes at a high level were its entry level devices going into emerging markets, including its successful 1100 and 1200 series devices, while more fully featured devices like its 5310, 5610, and 6500 series and Nseries devices generated the most revenue and profit for Nokia. With a strong presence in emerging markets, Nokia is poised to capitalize on replacement handset opportunities in these markets.

Samsung gained further clarity as the No. 2 vendor worldwide, building its largest margin yet against Motorola. Although shipments remained even from the holiday quarter, Samsung improved its presence within key emerging markets, balancing out against soft demand in Europe and North America. In the process its decreased marketing expenses, allowing for double-digit profitability. Samsung remains confident that it will reach its goal of 200 million units shipped this year, and look to more full featured devices to be released in the months to come.

Motorola had a disappointing quarter, falling further behind Samsung and reaching shipment levels not seen since the second half of 2004. Gaps in its product portfolio left the company vulnerable, especially in the areas of music, touch, and messaging where other vendors have flourished with their own products. Further compounding its problems was another quarter of operating loss and lower operating margin. While the results speak to its ongoing difficulties, Motorola has been building a framework to turn its fortunes around with plans to separate the mobile devices business unit from the company and streamline its silicon and software platforms to bring new devices to the market later this year.

LG Electronics capitalized on Sony Ericsson’s challenges to re-take the No. 4 position for the first time since the beginning of 2006. Thanks to the continued demand of its flagship feature phones, including the Viewty, Voyager, and Venus, LG bucked the trend of seasonal decrease in shipments. In addition, LG returned to double-digit profitability. Looking ahead, LG plans to grow its presence within emerging markets and ship more high-end devices next quarter.

Sony Ericsson started off the year citing several challenges affecting its shipment volumes: diminished demand for its mid-range and high-end devices, channel inventory buildup, component shortages, and greater interest in low-price handsets in Asia/Pacific, an area where the company has not had a strong presence. Despite this dour news, the company hopes that its renewed focus on the North American market with the W350, W760, Z555, and XPeria along with several Cybershot, Walkman, and Web-ready devices around the globe will yield positive results later in the year.

Nokia Siemens Networks drives the usage of renewable energy in remote base station sites

Nokia Siemens Networks drives the usage of renewable energy in remote base station sites n new growth markets particularly, where mobile networks are expanding into rural areas, advanced infrastructure such as a power grid is not always reliable or readily available and base station sites need to run autonomously. A sustainable alternative is to use renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power.Traditionally, the energy used to operate these sites has come from diesel generators that not only create CO2 and other harmful emissions, but also require regular re-fuelling and skilled maintenance work, which leads to additional travel and maintenance costs for the operator. Most importantly, the cost of diesel is high and is expected to rise in the future.

“A sustainable alternative to power remote base station sites is to use renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. By 2011, our first choice to power these sites will be renewable energy,” said Anne Larilahti, head of environmentally sustainable business, Nokia Siemens Networks, in a speech given in the Green Forum industry event in Beijing today.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ autonomous sites can be configured to best suit the environment of the site. In the sunniest parts of the world, photovoltaic cells can be used to convert sunlight to energy and provide the electricity needed to operate the site, and often solar panels are complemented with wind turbines.

“Solar and wind technologies are mature, they have a long life time, their operational cost is almost nonexistent and the capital expenditure required is decreasing. The lowering investment cost and the increasing prices of fossil fuels work together to improve the business case of utilizing renewable energy sources” said Larilahti.

“This is good news for telecom operators in China that are looking for ways to manage their long term costs. As China’s government moves ahead with plans to increase its renewable energy supply and focus on energy reduction technologies, Nokia Siemens Networks’ wind and solar solutions will help to power the increasing demands in the telecommunications industry. Not only will this result in cost and energy savings for operators, but it will contribute to a greener environment for all,” said David Ho, Chairman of Nokia Siemens Networks, Greater China region, speaking at the Green Forum event.

The conditions of each site are studied in order to decide on the optimal configuration of solar panels, wind turbines or hybrid combinations. With its network planning Nokia Siemens Networks finds the optimal solution for each site. Sophisticated network design takes into account local solar and wind conditions, site landscape and other factors, to create radio access networks that need minimal external support.

Wind and solar powered sites need minimal maintenance and they are also relatively easy and inexpensive to install. Renewable power sources are an excellent choice for many emerging markets, because they contribute to the low total cost of ownership that is vital for providing affordable communications services to subscribers. With increasing oil prices, payback times on the investment to hybrid solar-wind powered base station sites are continuously decreasing. Considering capital expenditure and operational cost, an autonomous site powered by renewable energy sources pays off after 2 - 4 years in a good sunny and/or windy location.

Nokia Siemens Networks through its parent companies has been working on alternative energy sources since 1981. The company is increasingly installing sites that are run by renewable energy. Currently the base station sites running on renewable energy sources have been installed to approximately 30 countries.

Besides finding new, more environmentally friendly ways of generating energy such as deploying renewable power sources, it is critical to pay attention to reducing energy consumption overall. Most of the energy in a typical telecommunication network is consumed by base stations in mobile networks. Energy efficiency of Nokia Siemens Networks base station products plays a key role in the use of renewable energy sources for powering base stations. Combining high efficiency base station technology with the best in renewable energy sources, Nokia Siemens Networks offers a solution that matches to the local site conditions.

Nokia Siemens Networks aims at net positive impact to the environment. Advanced mobile and fixed communication technology can play a significant role in creating a sustainable future by reducing adverse environmental impacts while at the same time increasing opportunities for economic welfare and growth. The goal of Nokia Siemens Networks is to connect the world in a way that creates a net positive impact to the environment and society by maximizing the benefits telecommunications can bring to people and businesses, while at the same time minimizing the environmental footprint of its own products and operations.

One in Every Three Phones Sold by 2013 Will be a Smartphone

One in Every Three Phones Sold by 2013 Will be a SmartphoneThe market for smartphones will grow from around 10% of the total handset market in 2007 to 31% of the market in 2013. A new study from ABI Research projects this meteoric growth to be a product of a number of complex factors including carriers’ drives to grow data revenues from advanced services and the general trend to pushing “smart” operating systems down into middle tier devices.ABI Research vice president Stuart Carlaw comments, “Smart operating systems are continually being optimized to run on processors with lower performance. There is a strategic move to support smart OSes in single chip midrange devices in order to unlock more data revenues.” Carlaw adds that, “The market is currently dominated by Nokia (52%) and Symbian (65%). However, the coalescence of the framework wars in the Linux environment and the growing stature of Windows Mobile will enable new competitors to put pressure on this established axis.”

The report finds that the iPhone effect is truly filtering through the handset market as other OEMs strive to remain competitive. Features that look set to proliferate and become central to enhancing user interface experiences include touchscreens, touchpads, and accelerometers facilitating tilt and shock sensing, as well as haptics providing tactile feedback.
