Nokia today has joined forces with New Alliance, an investment company which is part of the Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd, to form a 50/50 joint venture company designed to offer a range of mobile services in China and support the local developer ecosystem.
The joint venture company will be called Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited.
According to Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President of Services for Nokia, "China is the world's largest mobile and internet market. Nokia Continues to Streamline its R&D Operations
Nokia plans to align its research and development (R&D) operations in Finland and Denmark to be in line with the company's focused portfolio of future products. The planned changes are expected to affect up to 230 employees at Nokia's Oulu site in Finland and approximately 100 employees at Nokia's Copenhagen site. The total number would represent approximately 2 % of Nokia's R&D personnel globally.

Nokia Losing Share in Wi-Fi Handset Market
Nokia, the leading market share vendor for dual-mode Wi-Fi handsets, has seen its market lead slip significantly over the past year, reports In-Stat. In 2Q08, Nokia had over 50% market share. This has dropped well over 10 share points as of 2Q09. Over that same time period, Apple has significantly increased market share, as did RIM.
Wi-Fi handset shipments have increased significantly over the past several years. From 2007 to 2008, shipments increased by over 50%. This growth is a result from increased phone functionality, falling price points, and carrier promotion.

Mobile Phone Market Turns Corner in Third Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market saw mild sequential growth in the third quarter (3Q09), according to IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. Year-on-year growth remained negative, but improved from the first half of 2009. Mobile phone shipments totaled 287.1 million units worldwide in 3Q09, down 6.0% from a year earlier, but up 5.6% from the second quarter.

Nokia Siemens Networks is conducting end-to-end LTE interoperability testing with four leading device vendors across several frequency bands required in different regions, including AWS, 700 MHz and 2100 MHz. The tests cover several steps in end-to-end network configuration based on commercial LTE hardware, including the Flexi Multiradio Base Station and the Evolved Packet Core, and standard compliant software. Nearly Half of US Consumers Would Choose a “Green” Handset At the Right Price
Results from a 2009 ABI Research survey of 1000 adult mobile phone users in North America reveal that approximately 7% would be willing to pay a premium for an environmentally-friendly handset. A further 40% would choose a green handset over a conventional one if price, features, and performance were equal.
“These survey results mean that almost half of those surveyed were at least committed in principle to use of a green handset,” comments industry analyst Michael Morgan. “However the public is largely uninformed about their availability: only 4% said they were ‘very familiar’ with green handsets.”
