Axtel, S.A.B. de C.V. (announced that Motorola de Mexico S.A. and Motorola Inc. have been selected as the first vendor to provide access points, core network equipment, associated services and customer devices for its initial deployment of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) technology.WiMAX is a new IP-based voice and data wireless technology designed to deliver voice and data solutions, under fixed, portable, nomadic and mobile environments, to residential and business customers. Differentiated from other IP-based technologies, WiMAX provides quality of service and guaranteed reliability in accordance with grade of service standards for global telecommunications companies. Full mobile voice and data WiMAX solutions are expected to become available by year-end 2008 or beginning 2009.

AXTEL will purchase from Motorola equipment to install 802.16e WiMAX radiobase stations (access points), voice and data customer premise equipment, or CPE’s, and PCMCIA cards. Indoor CPE’s with wi-fi functionality and USB dongles will also be available for WiMAX. Laptops, PDA’s and handsets with WiMAX embedded chipsets should be available by the end of this year or beginning 2009.

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced it has signed a contract with Airwave O2 Limited to supply Motorola MTC100 PDAs (personal digital assistants) that operate on TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) networks. The agreement is the world’s first commercial contract for TETRA PDAs. Motorola will start the shipment at the end of 2006.

Running a suite of applications developed by O2 Airwave, these secure and rugged PDAs will help deliver critical intelligence to front-line workers in the police and other emergency services to enhance safety and effectiveness.

The Motorola MTC100 will host a number of mobile applications intended to help police officers spend more time on visible, active patrol and increase their productivity. Software applications will be developed by O2 Airwave and will operate through its existing mobile applications gateway, delivering a solution that will help achieve aims outlined in ACPO’s ^[1] 2002 UK National Strategy for Mobile Information.

Benefiting from O2 Airwave’s national footprint, officers will be able to use the secure TETRA network to ensure data integrity, remotely accessing criminal intelligence databases such as the Police National Computer and other sources, as well as compiling and submitting crime reports without having to return to a police station. Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today launched the first-ever personal digital assistant (PDA) to operate on TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) networks. The new, robust PDA delivers public safety users pocket-sized access to essential two-way data applications whilst on the move. The PDA offers the same value of Motorola’s TETRA hand-portable radios: Always On, Trusted, Reliable and Secure.

The PDA has been developed to meet the rugged requirements of public safety organisations that need secure access to real-time information on the move. Users can access person and vehicle records, report crimes and accidents, and issue penalty tickets via the PDA’s application suite.
