Sprint Nextel expands PTT phone line
Sprint announced today the coming availability of four new Nextel Direct Connect phones, powered by Qualcomm’s QChat technology, to customers in 40+ markets across the country. The LX400 by LG, Z400 by Samsung, and PRO-200 and PRO-700 by Sanyo will be available June 15 for purchase by all new and existing customers in Sprint retail stores in the designated markets. These new phones incorporate Nextel Direct Connect services, the speed of Sprint Mobile Broadband and Sprint’s largest voice calling area, giving customers a wider selection of phones to meet their productivity needs with connection in less than one second to millions of existing Nextel Direct Connect subscribers nationwide.”Instant connections help customers get things done more efficiently, and these new phones allow us to continue to deliver on the gold standard of instant push-to-talk connectivity on the Now Network,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product and technology development for Sprint. “In addition to delivering on this instant connectivity, these new phones also add the speed of Sprint Mobile Broadband and Sprint’s largest voice calling area so customers can do even more, faster.”
The new phones allow customers to make Direct Connect calls with the world’s largest push-to-talk community and will be available June 15 through Sprint retail stores, direct sales or telesales.

* LX400 by LG - The LX400 by LG is packaged in a slender form factor and enables Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk services. The phone also includes key features such as a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS capabilities and noise reduction capabilities. This phone is available for as low as $79.99 with a two-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.
* Z400 by Samsung - Ultra-rugged push-to-talk choices expand with the Z400 by Samsung, which is certified to Military specification 810F for dust, shock and vibration. Customers also have added benefits of a 1.3 megapixel camera, Sprint Navigation and Bluetooth support in this clamshell handset. This phone is available for as low as $99.99 with a two-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.
* PRO-200 by Sanyo - Sporting an attractive, slim clamshell form factor, the Pro-200 by Sanyo delivers instant Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk services and key functionalities including Bluetooth, messaging capabilities and mobile email. This phone is available for as low as $49.99 with a two-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.
* PRO-700 by Sanyo - Recognizing that instant communication is needed in sometimes harsh environments, Sprint is offering this rugged phone certified to military standards for dust, shock and vibration. This phone is available for as low as $79.99 with a two-year service agreement and $50 mail-in rebate.
Sprint plans to expand availability of these phones in additional markets and channels through the remainder of 2008. Customers can sign up to be notified of availability in additional markets at www.sprint.com/instantconnect.
Service Features
These new phones will continue to provide industry-leading push-to-talk performance, while operating on certain Rev. A portions of the Sprint Mobile Broadband network (except in Puerto Rico). Compared to other providers, Sprint’s expanded Nextel Direct Connect capable device portfolio offers significantly faster call set-up times of less than one second and one-to-one interoperability with the world’s largest established push-to-talk community. Features available on these handsets include:
* Direct Connect: Instant one-to-one push-to-talk communication that is interoperable with the millions of existing Nextel Direct Connect subscribers. Direct Connect provides the call set-up times of less than one second that customers have come to rely on to boost productivity and save time and money.
* Call Alerts: A repeating alert that users can send to let another Nextel Direct Connect subscriber know they are trying to reach them.
* Group Connect: Unique one-to-many capability of Group Connect that helps customers quickly communicate with up to 20 other Nextel Direct Connect users all at once. Users of the new phones can create and manage Group Connect groups on the phone or online. At this time, these new phones are not interoperable with Nextel or PowerSource phones for Group Connect services.
In addition, with these new phones, customers have the ability to take advantage of Sprint’s largest voice calling area and the blazing data speeds of Sprint Mobile Broadband. Sprint Mobile Broadband brings customers instant gratification so they can get what they want when they want it, with fast file downloads, Web browsing, email access and more.
Other new features exclusive to the new phones include:
* Single number option: If they wish, most customers purchasing these new phones can choose the simplicity of having one phone number for voice and push-to-talk calls. If preferred, customers can opt to have a separate Direct Connect number.
* TeamDC: This more formal one-to-many feature allows up to 35 Nextel Direct Connect subscribers to communicate via PTT at the same time - nationwide, quickly and easily. Customers create and manage groups online, then all members of the group receive a notification and can access the group. TeamDC is only available on these new phones and is not interoperable with Nextel or PowerSource phones.
* DC Permissions: Customers have the ability to block/allow incoming one-to-one push-to-talk calls and Call Alerts with the new phones.
* DC Missed Call Notification: - When on a Nextel Direct Connect call, customers receive a notification if they miss a push-to-talk call, Call Alert or Group call.
* Call Alerts with Text: With the new Call Alerts with Text feature, customers can attach one of several preset text messages, such as “Please stop by,” to Call Alerts sent to users of NDC phones powered by the QChat technology.
* Sprint Mobile Sync: This easy-to-use online tool lets customers manage all of their contact information online, including setting up groups. Additionally, this feature automatically synchronizes with the phone, allowing for easier entry, easier access and full secure backup of contacts. Contacts automatically transfer if the customer moves to another Sprint Mobile Sync-capable phone.
Unlimited Direct Connect and Group Connect use is included at no additional charge in Everything plans starting at $69.99 per month, and Talk/Message/Direct Connect plans starting at $49.99 per month. Unlimited Direct Connect and Group Connect will be available for $10 per month with other Sprint plans.

AT&T Inc. and MediaFLO USA Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated announced the launch of AT&T Mobile TV with FLO, a mobile television service featuring high quality live programming. The mobile TV service will launch in May 2008 on two new exclusive handsets, the LG Vu(TM) and the Samsung Access(TM). “Nokia has paid Qualcomm around $1 billion over 15 years for full access to the U.S. chip maker’s early mobile technology patents, the world’s top handset maker said in court documents.”
Nokia announced today that a United Kingdom High Court judge issued a ruling in favor of Nokia in the action brought by Qualcomm against Nokia on 24 May, 2006. In the ruling the judge determined that all of Qualcomm’s asserted GSM patent claims are invalid. Therefore Nokia does not need to compensate Qualcomm for these patents.”We are pleased with the Court’s decision that the patent claims are invalid and believe it is consistent with and supported by the facts,’ said Rick Simonson, Chief Financial Officer, Nokia. “This is the second court to conclude that Qualcomm does not have relevant and valid GSM patents.”
Qualcomm Incorporated today announced that multiple network operators have committed to trialing HSPA+ technology this year. To be conducted with operators including Hutchison 3G, Telecom Italia, Telefonica and Telstra, the Company’s HSPA+ trials bring the technology another step closer to commercialization. ZTE, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, is demonstrating the company’s newly IOT (Inter Operability Testing) tested 5.76Mbps HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) network equipment at the GSMA Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2008, Spain. This follows the successful launch of ZTE’s 7.2Mbps HSDPA/2Mbps HSUPA network equipment at China’s PT/Wireless & Networks Comm exhibition in October last year.HSUPA is a UMTS uplink enhancement technology introduced in 3GPP R6. It has two phases: in phase I the maximum uplink data throughput is 1.9Mbps; in phase II the maximum data throughput is up to 5.76Mbps. HSUPA technology increases capacity and throughput, and improves spectrum efficiency as well, satisfying the growing demand for mobile services in wireless broadband networks.

Qualcomm Incorporated, a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced that Federal District Judge James V. Selna has issued an injunction against certain Qualcomm products for the United States market that were found to infringe three Broadcom patents. Qualcomm is reviewing the complex ruling and expects it will require further clarification from the court on various aspects of the ruling, including the effect of Verizon’s existing license agreement with Broadcom.The ruling provides a “sunset” provision that stays the order until Jan. 31, 2009 for QChat and 1x/EV-DO products that were found to infringe any of the three patents by providing Qualcomm a limited license, subject to an ongoing royalty payment. This license is limited to products that were sold to customers on or before the jury verdict was delivered on May 29, 2007. The ‘010 and ‘317 patents apply only to Qualcomm’s QChat and 1x/EV-DO products. Qualcomm is continuing the development of work-around solutions for the ‘010 and ‘317 patents.
Qualcomm Incorporated today announced the availability of new UMTS (WCDMA) chipsets designed to comply with the latest ruling from a federal judge in Santa Ana, CA. The Company’s new products are available to device manufacturing customers for product shipment into the United States. Qualcomm’s shipments of chipsets for devices intended for international markets were not affected by the ruling. The new chipsets are pin- and software-compatible with the existing product versions, providing device manufacturers with drop-in replacements for a seamless transition. The Company anticipates the new chipsets will be in commercial handsets before the end of the first calendar quarter of 2008.”Qualcomm has available new UMTS chipsets that offer a seamless transition for impacted device manufacturers who are shipping devices into the U.S. market based on our flagship products,” said Alex Katouzian, vice president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “We are working to comply fully with the court ruling while minimizing the impact on our partners.”
Broadcom Corporation, a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, announced that a federal judge today issued an injunction against Qualcomm Incorporated’s continued infringement of three Broadcom patents.”We are very pleased with today’s ruling, which addresses Qualcomm’s improper use of our patented technology covering cellular chips and software for advanced consumer devices,” said David A. Qualcomm Incorporated today announced that the Company has added support for CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) wireless services in the 700 MHz band to its product roadmap. Qualcomm’s RTR6570(TM) transceiver delivers support for the 700 MHz band to CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) devices. The transceiver also supports all other frequency bands in the United States, including 850 MHz, 1700/2100 MHz, and 1900 MHz for CDMA2000. Qualcomm Incorporated today announced that it will enable a dramatic reduction in the cost of WCDMA (UMTS) mobile broadband handsets with the introduction of Qualcomm’s new cost-effective Mobile Station Modem(TM) (MSM(TM)) MSM6246(TM) HSDPA and MSM6290(TM) HSUPA chipsets. The products, sampling now, are designed to enable devices that break new price barriers for HSDPA and HSUPA handsets.
