Sony Ericsson adds 5 million new tracks to PlayNow

Sony Ericsson adds 5 million new tracks to PlayNowSony Ericsson today unveiled the next stage in the evolution of PlayNow(TM) arena, its popular over-the-air (OTA) download service. At the MIDEM conference in Cannes, Sony Ericsson announced deals with 10 major record labels, adding over 5 million new tracks to its extensive catalogue. Sony Ericsson also unveiled the design and URL for PlayNow(TM) arena and launched PlayNow(TM) Uncut, (formerly M-Buzz(TM)) a music promotional space for new, unsigned and developing artists.Record label partnerships

Today Sony Ericsson announced partnerships with 10 of the largest international and regional music labels including: Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, EMI, The Orchard, IODA, The PocketGroup, Hungama, X5 Music, Bonnier Amigo and VidZone, adding over 5 million new tracks to PlayNow(TM) arena. Sony Ericsson is currently negotiating further deals with a host of regional labels to further broaden the variety of music available and bring a wealth of localised content direct to the consumer.

Sony Ericsson introduced PlayNow(TM) in February 2004 as the easiest way to pre-listen and then purchase polyphonic ringtones directly to your phone. The service has proved a hit with consumers and is now available in 32 countries around the world, with annual free and premium downloads through both PlayNow and Fun & Downloads having reached more than 200 million. Since launch, the scope of the service has expanded to mirror the functionality of Sony Ericsson’s phones to include mastertones (MP3 ringtones), games, full music tracks, themes and wallpapers. In November 2007 Sony Ericsson announced its intention to further develop its PlayNow(TM) service with PlayNow(TM) arena, offering access to a greatly expanded range of content and combining the power of the PlayNow(TM) catalogue with unique applications like TrackID(TM), which identifies songs and allows them to be downloaded directly to your phone or PC.

Speaking at the Sony Ericsson event at MIDEM in Cannes, Sony Ericsson’s Executive Vice President, Anders Runevad, presented the enhanced PlayNow(TM) arena service and emphasised the importance of industry partnerships delivering digital content and an unparalleled multimedia experience:

“We are delighted to announce deals with such high calibre record labels. This will help realise our vision for PlayNow(TM) arena as a service that will be developed in collaboration with our partners. Our commitment is to work with the industry to ensure we are building an experience-based and intuitive content delivery platform, enabling the development of an ecosystem that provides a unique experience for the consumer and a business model where everybody prospers.”

With mobile games remaining a key focus, Sony Ericsson has also added 250 new games through existing deals with leading games manufactures such as EA Games, Gameloft, THQ, Glu, Digital Chocolate and I-Play. Sony Ericsson users download more games to their phones than users of any other mobile phone brand*. These deals take another step in cementing its number one position in the mobile games market.

PlayNow(TM) Uncut

PlayNow(TM) Uncut (previously know as M-BUZZ(TM)) is a promotional space for breaking new and emerging artists via Sony Ericsson’s product, content and marketing channels. PlayNow(TM) Uncut showcases selected, previously unreleased tracks, videos, artwork, interviews, tour dates and other artist information on Sony Ericsson mobile phones and the web at www.playnow-uncut.com.

The rebranding and alignment with PlayNow(TM) opens up new channel opportunities for artists and enables the site to target consumers worldwide, including the United States of America for the first time. With an international reach, the service has always been about presenting the best new talents from around the world, whatever their style or native language. Apart from the current streaming possibilities, the highest rated and most listened to tracks will be made available for sale in the music section of PlayNow(TM) arena. For artists, this will add revenue possibilities to the already extensive promotional benefits of appearing there.

One Arena. Unlimited experiences

“The PlayNow(TM) arena is an open environment that offers something for everyone. We see PlayNow(TM) Uncut as the edgy version, whilst the PlayNow(TM) music section is more a case of familiarity, giving consumers something they know and are already comfortable with. Consumer experience is our absolute priority and we will continue to develop PlayNow(TM) arena as a service that appeals to all consumer segments and lifestyle trends,” said Martin Blomkvist, Head of Content Acquisition & Management at Sony Ericsson.

The PlayNow(TM) arena will be brought directly to the consumer at: www.playnow-arena.com

The PlayNow(TM) arena will launch in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland in May 2008 with more European markets to come at the end of Q2 2008 and further expansion in Europe, Americas and Asia during Q3 and Q4. Sony Ericsson predicts that the PlayNow(TM) arena will be active in close to 30 markets by the end of 2008.

TrackID(TM)

The growth in popularity of the TrackID(TM) application has rocketed around the globe, presently recording more than 200,000 hits per day equal to more than two each second, a figure that has doubled in the last three months. TrackID(TM) will be an integral part of the PlayNow(TM) arena experience, offering an instant way to first hear a track - for example, in a coffee shop or on the radio - and then get it to your phone and PC. The PlayNow(TM) arena itself will feature TrackID(TM) Charts, created by consumers in real time using TrackID(TM) around the world. This will allow consumers to see what songs other users are searching for and wanting to hear the most, both globally and in their own market.

Sony Ericsson at Midem 2008

Sony Ericsson will be showcasing its PlayNow(TM) arena music store as well as demonstrating its latest handsets and accessories at booth R31.01 at Midem 2008 in Cannes, France.

IDC releases year-end Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker report

IDC releases year-end Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker reportThe worldwide mobile phone market passed a new milestone in shipments by recording over 300 million devices shipped during the fourth quarter, while experiencing slower year-over-year growth for 2007. According to IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, the 334.0 million handsets shipped during the holiday quarter was a new record for the industry, and was up 15.3% over last quarter. For the entire year, total shipments reached 1,144.1 million units in 2007 with 12.4% overall growth. Nokia once again led vendors in shipments throughout the year, although some shakeup in the vendor rankings did occur. Samsung, which had been the number three vendor in the industry, surpassed Motorola during 2007 to capture the number two spot.

“Give credit to Samsung for taking the number two position worldwide from Motorola,” says Ramon Llamas, research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. “For the past few years, Samsung’s growth kept pace with the market, but in 2007 the company beat the market almost by a factor of four. Samsung capitalized on replacement handset opportunities in the United States and Europe with a steady stream of mid-range and high-end devices while Motorola spent much of the year addressing inventory challenges across EMEA and Asia. Now that Motorola is implementing a new handset strategy, it will be interesting to watch the hotly contested number two position in 2008.”

“Over the last three years, growth in the industry during the holiday quarter has fluctuated from 18.0% to 30.0%, and this past quarter we saw it drop to 11.6%,” said Ryan Reith, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. “The expectation that the market would maintain the level of growth it saw over the last three years was unrealistic. We expect growth to be in the single digits throughout 2008, and most likely for years to follow.”

Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors

Nokia shipped more units in the fourth quarter than the next three vendors’ shipment volumes combined. This, Nokia executives pointed out, was the result of its streamlined operations, which produced on average nearly 1.5 million units each day during the quarter. This number could have been even higher if the company did not have to deal with component shortages during production. Regardless, it still marks a significant accomplishment. Nokia’s volumes were primarily driven by entry level products from its 1100 and 1200 device families, but its biggest revenue and profit generators came from its premium Nseries devices.

Samsung achieved several noteworthy accomplishments to end 2007: It took the No. 2 position worldwide for the year, posted its third consecutive quarter as the No. 2 vendor worldwide, and recorded its sixth consecutive quarter of shipment growth. In the process, Samsung realized double-digit profit margins during the quarter, resulting from an emphasis on its premium Ultra Edition phones and converged mobile devices. Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2008, the company plans to top its 46.3 million shipment volume while maintaining profit margins.

Motorola spent another quarter addressing its challenges, the most significant being a slowing demand for Motorola’s products. CEO Greg Brown pointed out that the company had missed out on significant growth areas, most notably in 3G, China, and emerging markets, and that gaps in Motorola’s current product portfolio had to be addressed. Recent announcements of its ROKR E8, Z10, and W series reflect Motorola’s attempts to revive its handset business, but recovery is expected to continue into 2009.

Sony Ericsson broke through the thirty million unit mark for the first time in its history. As in previous quarters, EMEA represented the bulk of the company’s shipments, but it also improved its presence in North America, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. Even with greater attention and resources going towards emerging markets, Sony Ericsson still recorded the highest ASP among the leading vendors. Key devices for the quarter included the K550, W200, W300 and the W580.

LG Electronics took another step towards breaking the 25 million mark, and with the success of premium devices in developed markets and cost effectiveness, the company also realized slight operating margin improvement. Key to its success were several models released during the quarter, including the Voyager and Venus in the United States, and the Viewty in Europe. Despite its positive results during the quarter, LG saw the distance between itself and Sony Ericsson grow to more than seven million units, reversing the progress it had made in previous quarters.

Sony Ericsson sells over 100 million handsets in 2007

Sony Ericsson sells over 100 million handsets in 2007Units shipped in the quarter reached 30.8 million, a 18% increase compared to the same period last year, generating continued sequential and year-on-year market share gains. Sales for the quarter were Euro 3,771 million, in line with sales a year ago reflecting a strategic shift to a greater proportion of lower priced handsets in the product portfolio. Income before taxes for the quarter was Euro 501 million in line with a year ago. Net income for the quarter was Euro 373 million.Sony Ericsson gained market share during the quarter due to the continued success of such products as the K550 Cyber-shot(TM) and the W200, W300 and W580 Walkman phones in the Americas and Europe. Although Average Selling Price (ASP) increased slightly sequentially during the quarter, as a result of the introduction of new flag-ship Walkman and Cyber-shot(TM) phones such as the W910 and K850 models, the trend for falling ASPs year-on-year reflects the company’s direction to broaden its product portfolio.

“Sony Ericsson finished a very good year, which highlighted how the company has strategically positioned itself to capture market share with an expanded product portfolio. Investments are being made in both R&D and brand building, to deepen the portfolio and strengthen Sony Ericsson’s presence in new and developing markets around the world. Our target remains to become one of the top three players in the industry, and the momentum we established in 2006 and 2007 makes this a realistic and achievable ambition,” said Dick Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson estimates the 2007 global handset market as being over 1.1 billion units, in line with previous forecasts. On this basis the company believes it grew market share around 2 percentage points to reach slightly over 9% for the full year 2007 compared to full year 2006.

During the fourth quarter Sony Ericsson announced that it had entered into a series of agreements with Motorola, Inc. whereby Motorola acquired 50% of the share capital in U.I. Holdings BV, the Dutch owner of the Swedish software company UIQ Technology AB, which was acquired by Sony Ericsson from Symbian Ltd. earlier in the year. The transaction was ratified by the appropriate competition authorities during the quarter.

Sony Ericsson announced a number of new products during the quarter including high-end W890 Walkman and the K630 and the K660 HSDPA web phones. The company also announced its strategy to expand Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow(TM) digital content distribution application into a full service proposition during 2008.

On November 1, 2007 Sony Ericsson’s president Miles Flint stepped down and Hideki ‘Dick’ Komiyama joined the company to replace him. Dick Komiyama joined Sony Ericsson from Sony Corporation where he was Director, Chairman, Sony Electronics Inc., USA, and Executive Vice President of Electronics Marketing and Sales Strategies of Sony Corporation, Japan.

To make things easier still, the K630 features a dedicated music key to help you navigate all of those songs.

Industry heavyweights rally support for UFS spec

Industry heavyweights rally support for UFS specMicron Technology, Inc., Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, Spansion Inc., STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments announced today that they support the creation of a far-ranging industry specification for removable memory cards and embedded memory solutions being standardized by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC), a leading open-standards organization in the semiconductor industry. JEDEC is well known for its expertise in the standardization of component technologies and solutions. The new specification, dubbed Universal Flash Storage (UFS), reflects the industry’s need for a universal memory solution that removes the need for adaptors to accommodate different removable memory card sizes.

Widespread demand for higher densities and higher performance, plus the surging popularity of multimedia content, is accelerating the need for advanced memory solutions as removable card or embedded formats. UFS will provide a revolutionary leap towards supporting very low access times required for memories, as well as enabling high-speed access to large multimedia files, while reducing power-consumption in consumer electronic (CE) devices. The target performance level is expected to be a significant advancement beyond that of the varied flash cards popular today. Today, users experience a three-minute access time for a 90-minute (4 Gigabyte) high-definition movie; with the new standard, this would be reduced to a few seconds.

Major applications such as mobile handsets, digital still cameras and other CE devices will benefit from the convenience of a universal open standard based specification that is intended to reduce the time-consuming process of enabling interoperability among the various types of removable and embedded memory solutions at the system level. UFS is planned to provide consumers in the future with the convenience of a unified removable memory card that can be shared among various mobile, portable and other CE devices without the need for any adaptors.

The UFS standard is expected to be finalized in 2009.

New Sony Ericsson K770 Cyber-shot phone

sony-ericsson.jpgSony Ericsson’s new K770 Cyber-shot phone, announced today, is a digital camera, a photo album and an elegant phone all in-one. Still a phone first and foremost, it allows you to send and share your photos as soon as you’ve taken them.At just 14.5mm slim and finished in a fashionable Truffle Brown, the K770 can take pictures as good as a standalone digital camera; pictures can be printed up to A4 size. The camera can also be used for video and comes with a powerful photo light for indoor photo-taking and filming. As with all Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phones, ease of use sits at the heart of the experience. To take a picture, just slide open the lens cover, find your subject and shoot.

Capturing the perfect picture is easy with the K770 Cyber-shot phone. Just slide open the lens cover and you’re ready. Once in camera mode the 1.9 inch screen becomes the viewfinder, the Cyber-shot based menu becomes visible and you’ll also see eight lit icons appear across the phones keypad. These serve as 1-click shortcuts to each of the camera’s key functions, such as picture size and photo light.

If you take a spontaneous snapshot and the light conditions are poor, simply select Photo fix for PC-free photo editing on your phone.

The most direct way to share your photos is perhaps through a slide show on the K770’s screen. When you want to show them to people that are not around, though, you can post your pictures to your own “blogsite” or on-line gallery. Share the web site address to share your photos.

If you want to transfer photos swiftly from the K770 Cyber-shot phone to your PC or laptop, then simply use the USB Cable provided in-box to drag and drop them from one to the other. Alternatively, if you prefer to print your pictures, the 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus delivers picture quality that is good enough to print your photo out at upto A4 size (297mm x 210 mm). You can even connect your K770 direct to a printer using PictBridge for PC-free printing.

The K770 is about much more than just camera features. Supporting Memory Stick Micro (M2), the K770 comes with a 256 MB memory card that lets you store up to 200 photos of the best quality. Peruse your photo album whilst listening to your favourite music tracks on the in-built media player. Or tune in to the FM radio with RDS that seeks out clear reception when you’re on-the-move.

With all of this music at your fingertips, it’s worth investing in a Stereo Bluetooth Headset that will stream music wirelessly from your phone and let you enjoy your favourite songs hands-free. The Stereo Bluetooth Headset HBH-DS200 can be auto-paired with the K770 and offers up to 6 hours of talktime or music listening time.

The K770 Cyber-shot phone is all about understated style. It’s a discreet, grown-up looking phone that slips neatly into your pocket or bag. Yet when you need it there is a digital camera on-board that can give results as good as you expect from a digital camera.

The K770 is a GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 phone that will be available in Truffle Brown in selected markets from autumn 2007.

If showing a photo on the K850’s large 2.2″ crystal bright display, the innovative auto rotate feature will display it in the correct aspect - portrait or landscape - irrespective of the orientation it was taken in. Picture blogging and video blogging allow you to upload your shots and footage at HSDPA speeds to your own blogsite.

Easy to pair - Given the premium look of the K850 Cyber-shot phone, you will want to match it with an accessory that looks just as good. Announced today as an optional accessory, the Bluetooth Headset IV840 fits discretely and securely into your ear. This high-performance headset can leave you handsfree for up to 9 hours of talking. It can pair automatically with the K850 for easy set-up, whilst digital noise cancellation provides for optimum sound quality. So, like the K850, the IV840 does not compromise performance or ease of use.

The Sony Ericsson K850 Cyber-shot phone is a Tri-Band HSDPA and Quad-Band GPRS/EDGE phone with a colour choice of either Velvet Blue or Luminous Green. It will be available in selected markets from early Q4 2007.

New Walkman phones offers touch-screen navigation

Music marathon: Up to 700 albums - around 8000 songs - can be stored on the 8GB memory of the W960 Walkman phone. Managing tracks is easy and it can transfer up to 1GB of data, including music tracks, from your PC to the phone in less than three minutes. With two stylish headsets supplied in the box (one of these the new Stereo Bluetooth Headset HBH-DS220) and a music listening time of up to 27 hours, you’re free to dance much more than the night away.

Visual feast: Album arts, TV shows and games. You can navigate the W960 and browse media files with the touch of a finger (or stylus). Just press the touch controls to find your way to whatever type of entertainment you need. If video is your choice, the phone supports video playback at 30 frames per second, which is the same as TV quality

Go Wireless: The 2.6″ touch-sensitive display is great for Web browsing. Hook up to the Web using the 3G network or a Wi-Fi access point. Visit your favourite pages, buy music online, and download new programmes to make the W960 truly yours.

Performance photos: To catch the fun, the W960 Walkman phone boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera within its 16mm frame. Auto focus makes your photos sharper, and with picture messaging or email you can share them instantly. Another way to spread the word or photos is to post them on your own blog site.

Sort it out: You can organize all of your content for the W960 using Media Manager PRO, a PC programme for optimizing music, photos and videos to be used on your phone.

Wise up: The W960 incorporates TrackID music recognition software. This lets you record a clip of a song on your phone and find out instantly the name of the artist, track and album. Handy for those moments when you hear a song you like, but do not know who sings it.

On the W960 (and W910) this feature has been taken to the next level. You can now receive detailed information about the song identified - the background of the artists and the album. New ways to search have been added in, other than just by capturing an audio clip. If you know a bands name and not much else, for example, you can text search to find out more. Search by artist, title, album or lyrics.

Listen up: The W960 Walkman phone really is the centrepiece of your music listening life, which is why both a stereo portable handsfree and a Stereo Bluetooth headset for music streaming are included with the phone. When you want more, the new Street-style Portable Handsfree HPM-83 adds urban style to the W960. Its flexible neckband gives a secure fit and wraps behind the head, so as not to get in the way if you’re running or at the gym. If you want to share your music library with friends, the Bluetooth Music Receiver MBR-100 plugs into your home stereo and lets you stream tracks directly from the phone to your stereo’s speakers.

The Sony Ericsson W960 Walkman phone is UMTS 2100-GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and will be available in Vinyl Black from Q4 2007.
