Altera Stratix GX Devices and Nios Processor Chosen by Panasonic for 3.5G Wireless Network Products

Stratix GX Devices and Nios Processor Deliver High-Performance Integrated Solution for Next-Generation Mobile Communications Infrastructure

Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR) today announced that Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader of mobile communications products, has selected Stratix(R) GX FPGAs and the Nios(R) embedded processor to deliver critical performance-intensive functions for its next-generation 3.5G network base transceiver station (BTS). This BTS will support high-speed data packet access (HSDPA), which provides significantly higher data transfer rates than were previously possible, enabling wireless network operators to deliver new and exciting data services to their customers. To support this level of performance, Panasonic required a combination of integrated high-speed transceivers and microprocessor functionality that could only be met with Altera’s Stratix GX device and Nios embedded processor.

“Altera provided us with a solution that addressed our needs from a system-level perspective,” said Masakazu Shobu, general manager of Panasonic’s Node-B Development Group. “First, Stratix GX devices met our performance requirements, due to their powerful digital signal processing (DSP) blocks and memory architecture. Also, the maturity and excellent development tools for the Nios processor convinced us that it was ideal for handling the call control and bus control functions in our BTS baseband system. By enabling us to combine the transceiver and processor capability into a single device, Altera delivered us a solution that met our aggressive cost target, and allowed us to meet a very ambitious product development schedule.”

With the growing demand for data services and mobile multimedia such as digital images, movies, and video conferencing, there is a corresponding need for higher data transmission rates to support such services. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a collaborative project for global standardization of third-generation mobile communication systems, has specified HSDPA technology to address this need. HSDPA is a significant enhancement to wideband code-division multiple access (W-CDMA) and can achieve speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. As the leading 3G vendor in the world, Panasonic has one of the largest market shares in Japan’s 3G/W-CDMA market, and is working hard to bring HSDPA technology to that country.

“Leading mobile communications developers like Panasonic require mature, reliable solutions to build the next-generation wireless network infrastructure,” said Arun Iyengar, senior director of Altera’s wireless business unit. “Altera offers a complete portfolio of solutions that enable the development of HSDPA-based base stations for 3.5G networks. Panasonic’s choice of the Altera solution proves that the combination of Stratix GX FPGAs and the Nios processor is ideal for delivering the high-speed transceiver and advanced control functionality that the 3.5G BTS requires.”

Nokia: Viral Outbreak Sends Snakes Slithering Onto N-Gage Game Decks Worldwide

3D Revamp of World’s Most Famous Mobile Game for Free Download

From the dark winter depths of the Finnish wilderness, a viral outbreak has begun, with a new generation of Snakes coming to the N-Gage platform. Available for free download from http://www.snakesoutbreak.com starting today, this latest incarnation of the world’s most famous mobile game will infect N-Gage game deck users with that familiar Snakes desire to see how long you can go. Multiplayer games will quickly turn into a slippery session with support for up to 4 players via Bluetooth wireless technology. Players can start their own viral outbreak by sharing their “infection” with other N-Gage owners; a full copy of Snakes can easily be transmitted by Bluetooth connection.

“Snakes is the most famous mobile game ever, so we though it was entirely appropriate to bring a new generation to the N-Gage platform,” said Pasi Polonen, Director, Game Publishing, Nokia. “The unique method of viral distribution via Bluetooth, plus the free download, means that practically every N-Gage owner can enjoy the addictive gameplay and upload their high scores to the N-Gage Arena.”

Snakes takes players deep into the interstitial space that exists in between the atoms, electrons and quarks that form matter. This constant struggle between the elements provides the perfect backdrop for 42 levels of intense and sometimes mind-boggling action. Players must navigate each level, searching for power boosts, travel along power paths and stay alert to avoid obstacles. Some levels are double-sided, forcing players to play both sides.

Visit http://www.snakesoutbreak.com to download a copy of the game and check out a lot of other cool stuff. You can send free SMS or e-mail pranks to your friends, watch the Snakes 3D in action. Most of all, just have a laugh, since the website is absolutely hilarious.

Texas Instruments Delivers Industry’s First Integrated Single-Chip Solution for Mobile Phones; Nokia to Develop Mobile Phones Based on the Solution

Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) today announced the cooperation whereby Nokia will incorporate a single chip solution based on TI’s Digital RF Processor (DRP) technology to its future mobile phones. The cooperation will allow Nokia to offer more cost-effective advanced handsets, especially in high-volume entry markets.Today’s announcement fulfills a commitment TI made in 2002 when the company announced its intention to integrate the bulk of handset electronics on a single chip, including digital baseband, SRAM, logic, RF, power management and analog functions, and to sample the first product in 2004. The first version of the single-chip solution, which sampled in December 2004 and was developed through TI’s advanced 90nm CMOS manufacturing technology, targets the mass-market voice-centric marketplace.

By adopting TI’s DRP-based single-chip technology for its future mobile phones, Nokia intends to increase its proven innovation and leadership position in the marketplace. Cost, size, power and performance optimizations are crucial, especially for high-volume entry-level mobile phones. The combination of Nokia’s world-leading expertise in mobile devices with TI’s DRP based single-chip technology will take this optimization to a higher level. As a first step, Nokia phones based on the single-chip solution will target the entry-level mobile phone market, particularly in high-growth regions such as India and China.

Based on TI’s innovative DRP technology, the single-chip solution reinforces the company’s clear edge in integration, furthering TI’s and its customers’ competitive positions. This pioneering approach to wireless chip design applies digital technology to simplify radio frequency processing, which significantly reduces board space, extends battery life, and makes for a more cost-effective, powerful, versatile mobile phone. The world’s first GSM cellular phone call using TI’s DRP technology was made last February in TI’s labs, proving the technology.

“Over two years ago, TI announced its vision to integrate its DRP technology in our mobile system solutions,” said Gilles Delfassy, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Wireless Terminals Business Unit. “This vision was first put into action in a single-chip solution for Bluetooth connectivity, is now continued with the single-chip GPRS solution, and will be followed with a robust roadmap of single-chip products to address additional wireless needs. With the industry’s first integrated single-chip solution, TI and Nokia are bringing more affordable, advanced mobile phones to consumers worldwide.”

“TI’s advanced DRP technology, combined with our systems expertise, will enable us to deliver smaller, sleeker handsets with the latest voice, data, and multimedia capabilities without increasing size and power consumption,” said Juha Pinomaa, Vice President, Entry Business Line, Nokia. “By incorporating TI’s DRP technology into a single chip, future Nokia mobile phones will provide the ideal mix of cool features and cost-effectiveness, making them more attractive to the mass marketplace.”

This latest advancement joins TI’s already sophisticated and integrated DRP technology roadmap. The BRF6100 Bluetooth(R) single chip, announced in June 2002, was the first implementation of TI’s DRP technology, followed by the BRF6150 and the BRF6300. TI’s integrated wireless technology roadmap also includes a single chip solution for digital TV for mobile phones, as well as future single chip solutions for GPS, wireless LAN, UMTS and other air interfaces, paving the way for further integration with the cellular modem and TI’s OMAP(TM) processors.

Pioneers in wireless technology, Samsung and Verizon Wireless are bringing cutting-edge features to consumers with their latest offering. An integrated rotating 1.3-mega pixel digital camera allows customers to take high-quality images and send them via Verizon Wireless’ Picture Messaging or to anyone with email. “Samsung has once again raised the bar for converged multimedia devices through the a890,” said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president, Samsung. “This phone helps Verizon Wireless customers optimize their wireless experience with Verizon Wireless’ VCAST 3G multimedia service.”

The Samsung a890 gives customers access to Verizon Wireless’ flagship VCAST 3G multimedia service — VCAST customers get unlimited access to a wide array of more than 300 daily updated video clips from leading content providers for $15.00 monthly access in addition to their regular Verizon Wireless calling plan. Verizon Wireless VCAST customers also receive unlimited browsing of Verizon Wireless’ Mobile Web 2.0 news and information service. In addition, customers can choose from premium content, available for an additional cost, that includes 3-D games, music videos and other premium video clips.

Nokia Humanitarian Aid to Tsunami Relief Work

Company Commits EUR 2.5 Million to Education Fund for Children in Affected Areas

Further to Nokia’s immediate initial response in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami disaster, the company has developed a longer-term recovery proposal for affected areas in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, with its EUR 2.5 million education fund.

Funds will be distributed among the four countries over a five-year period and will support educational initiatives such as the reconstruction of schools and provision of educational equipment, books, supplies, scholarships and teacher training.

Jorma Ollila, Nokia Chairman and CEO said: “During the first crucial days, we channeled our relief efforts into direct cash contributions, product and service donations and extensive employee volunteering. However, with the early-phase response now largely underway, we wanted to set out plans for a more sustainable assistance program in helping people rebuild their lives.

“Education has long been core to Nokia’s values and community involvement work. With schools destroyed, teachers lost and children orphaned in the South & South East Asia coastal regions, the fund will support a range of educational needs in these areas.”

The Nokia Education Fund is managed by the International Youth Foundation (IYF), a global, non-governmental organization operating in more than 60 countries. As extensive rebuilding and revitalising work begins in the affected communities, IYF and Nokia will work on a country-by-country basis with local governments, NGO’s and international aid agencies to decide on the most appropriate and effective implementation for each area. The company is also inviting its customers and partners to join this effort.

Including the new fund allocation, the total value of Nokia’s overall money and in-kind contribution is so far estimated to be in excess of EUR 3 million.

Following is a limited summary of Nokia’s relief support efforts to date:

  • An immediate initial cash donation from Nokia global via the Red Cross, Finland, combined with similar country-level donations in Asia and the rest of the world, amounting to several hundreds of thousands of euros.
  • Operator customer teams work to restore and expand network capacity as well as help in monitoring network stability and planning services.
  • Approximately 1000 mobile phones given to operators and rescue teams, including mobile phone and other in-kind donations at country level.
  • Rapid and responsive employee volunteer effort through Nokia’s internal ‘Helping Hands’ volunteer program, either by working directly with aid organizations or participating in employee-giving campaigns, such as Red Cross and Red Crescent collections. Local Nokia people also donated basic necessities such as clothes and blankets in some affected areas.
  • In numerous countries, employee collection campaigns were matched 100% by Nokia.

Veli Sundback, Senior Vice President, Corporate Relations and Responsibility said: “We sought to respond to this disaster with both humanitarian aid and technical expertise. In the region, Nokia teams were on-site, same-day in some cases, working to restore and expand the telecommunications capacity so critical for emergency relief work.

“On a global level, as we already had the Nokia Helping Hands volunteer channel in place, our people were able to mobilise rapidly, and the sheer range of support activities and compassion shown was overwhelming.”

Calls to local, national, and mobile numbers drop to just half a penny a minute

New Daytime 3000 tariff from T-Mobile means that Desktop Mobile(tm) users can reduce costs and improve communications with field staff

Burnside Telecom (www.burnsidetelecom.com), a developer of innovative landline and cellular communications equipment, today highlighted the substantial cost benefits of its Desktop Mobile for companies on the new Daytime 3000 tariff from T-Mobile.

“By using the Desktop Mobile with the new T-Mobile Daytime 3000 tariff, companies can now phone local or national phone numbers - or other T-Mobile phones - at a lower cost than landline to landline calls,” says David Robson, Director, Burnside Telecom. “The Desktop Mobile is the ideal cellular phone for office use. Unlike handheld mobiles, the Desktop Mobile can be connected to any office phone or PBX, thereby providing a shared and permanent resource that can be used and answered by anyone in the office.”

T-Mobile’s unbeatable Daytime 3000 tariff gives each user 3000 daytime minutes to all local and national numbers, as well as to all other T-Mobile phones, for £15 per month excluding VAT. As such, any company that installs Desktop Mobiles in its office and supplies mobiles to its field staff on this tariff can reduce calls costs to as low as half a penny a minute, giving an average of two hours talk time a day at this rate. Also, no longer will companies have to reimburse employees’ own exorbitant mobile phone bills.

With the Desktop Mobile, all of these benefits can be enjoyed using any type of corded or cordless desktop phone. Multi-party conference calls are much easier to establish and long conversations can at last be held in comfort. Traditional desktop phones are also easier to dial and to use, and do not raise the same health concerns associated with prolonged use of mobile handsets.

By using the Desktop Mobile, SMS text messages can be composed, sent, or received using any type of home or office phone. Also, because the terminal is a resource that can be shared, incoming text messages, missed calls, and voicemail can be retrieved and disseminated more quickly by anyone in a work group.

About Burnside Telecom
Burnside Telecom is a developer of innovative landline and cellular communications equipment. The company’s first product was the Robson PBX which has all of the features and more of PBXs costing many times as much, including auto attendant, voice mail, interactive voice response and unique call handling and filtering.
