Hurricane Season ‘05: Verizon Wireless is Ready

Year-Round Dedication Keeps Network Prepared To Serve Customers In Times Of Emergency

With the start of the 2005 hurricane season around the corner, Verizon Wireless’ team of “test men and women” are fine tuning the company’s network to maintain its reputation as provider of the nation’s most reliable wireless network when it really counts. The company’s national team of test men and women work to ensure coverage and call quality across the Verizon Wireless nationwide network, including areas which are often directly in the path of hurricanes, as well as other regions that can be affected by these storms.

Last year, the Verizon Wireless network lived up to its reputation as the nation’s most reliable. In the aftermaths of hurricanes that swept through the Florida/Gulf Coast region of the U.S., the Verizon Wireless network significantly outperformed the competition. For example, along the Florida Turnpike and I-95 in Palm Beach, Saint Martin, Saint Lucie and Indian River Counties only hours after Hurricane Frances on September 7, the “Call Success Rate” on the Verizon Wireless network measured 96 percent, compared to other carriers with call completion rates as low as 3 percent. For a complete report on Verizon Wireless hurricane performance, visit http://news.vzw.com/news/2004/09/pr2004-09-24a.html.

With its network performing well, Verizon Wireless was able to provide thousands of free phones and millions of minutes of airtime to relief organizations and emergency workers when other communications networks lost coverage during the storms. In addition, the company also set up Emergency Communications Centers to enable residents to contact loved ones, insurance companies and/or disaster relief agencies.

“We take our role in public safety very seriously,” said Dick Lynch, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Verizon Wireless. “Our customers depend on their wireless phones every day-and it’s especially important for calls to go through during times of emergency. Preparing for these emergencies and maintaining the nation’s most reliable wireless network play an important part in our commitment to our customers.”

Verizon Wireless preparation for the 2005 hurricane season includes:

  • The Verizon Wireless network is built for reliability in emergencies, with battery back up power at all facilities, as well as generators installed at all switching facilities and many cell site locations. This capability is critical when power goes out and if roads are impassable in the wake of a storm.
  • The company has a fleet of Cells on Wheels (COWS) and Cells on LightTrucks (COLTS), which are self-powered transmitters that can be rolled into hard-hit locations or areas that need extra network capacity. Network teams also have hundreds of generators ready to go to further strengthen the network.
  • Verizon Wireless is fully prepared to again quickly set up wireless emergency communication centers (WECCs) to serve residents and rescue agencies in the area(s) in the greatest need.
  • The company has developed and practiced a comprehensive emergency response plan, including preparing emergency command centers in the case of a storm or crisis.

Verizon Wireless has regularly invested more than $4 billion nationally each year since its inception - and more than $5 billion last year alone - to expand and upgrade its nationwide wireless network. The company’s most reliable network claim is based on the network studies completed by test men and women, who conduct more than 300,000 calls monthly on the national Verizon Wireless network and other wireless carriers’ networks while traveling more than 100,000 miles in specially-equipped company test vehicles.

Encore! Encore! Concert Performances Available on Verizon Wireless V CAST Phones, Including: Velvet Revolver, Sum 41, Chicago, Avril Lavigne and Many More Top Artists

Verizon Wireless and Clear Channel Entertainment Properties Bring Live Concert Experience to New V CAST Encore Channel at No Additional Charge to Subscribers

The hottest ticket in town is now on your wireless phone. Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless provider, and Clear Channel Entertainment Properties, announced the launch of the V CAST Encore Channel today — a new V CAST channel exclusive to Verizon Wireless V CAST customers, broadcasting concert performances from top artists in rock, pop, alternative, country, world and hip-hop. On the V CAST Encore Channel, concert performances from popular artists will be broadcast in the days following select live shows for one week. Artists and songs available for viewing rotate as new performances take place around the country (see current concert schedule at end of release).

The V CAST Encore Channel is a continuation of Verizon Wireless’ focus on delivering music to its customers, which began with ring tones and then evolved to Ringback Tones. The V CAST launch earlier this year offered customers full-length music videos. Now, because of the quality of Verizon Wireless’ high-speed EV-DO network and the company’s relationship with Clear Channel Entertainment Properties, V CAST customers have the opportunity to enjoy songs from their favorite artists from concerts taking place across the country.

“Our relationship with Clear Channel Entertainment Properties brings a broad range of popular artists to our wireless multimedia service,” said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “Clear Channel’s unparalleled artist relationships will allow our V CAST customers to see and listen to concert performances from artists they love - regardless of whether their tastes are pop or alternative, country or hip- hop.”

“Wireless is the next big delivery platform for extending the entertainment experience beyond live performances,” said Bruce Eskowitz, president of Clear Channel Entertainment Properties. “We’re breaking new ground in our collaboration with Verizon Wireless, the pioneer of next-generation wireless entertainment. With the delivery of a live concert experience following a show, V CAST customers across the country will now be able to experience the thrill of the most incredible entertainment at no extra charge.”

Within days of a recent concert, each participating artist will offer a few of their songs for a limited time on the V CAST Encore Channel in the Entertainment category on Verizon Wireless V CAST-enabled wireless phones. For example, at launch V CAST customers can tune in to watch three songs from Velvet Revolver’s May 18 show in Pittsburgh.

There are no additional charges to view the concert songs — the V CAST Encore Channel is included in V CAST’s monthly access fee. V CAST customers get unlimited access to a wide array of more than 300 videos that are updated daily from leading content providers, including the V CAST Encore Channel. Verizon Wireless V CAST customers also receive unlimited browsing of Verizon Wireless’ Mobile Web 2.0(SM) news and information service. In addition, customers can choose from premium content, available for an additional cost, that includes 3D games, music videos and other premium channels.

V CAST’s array of hot, new multimedia programming is located in the Get It Now(R) virtual store. Customers can access video from favorite news, sports and entertainment providers in the getFLIX shopping aisle and check out new, cutting-edge 3D games in the getGAMES aisle. V CAST also gives customers unlimited access to browse and view applications in the other familiar Get It Now shopping aisles — such as getTONES and getGOING.

V CAST customers can find the V CAST Encore Channel on the VX8000 phone. With the LG VX8000, V CAST customers can watch content on their wireless phones and experience outstanding clarity and sharpness.

Verizon Wireless products and services are available at more than 1,900 Verizon Wireless stores nationwide, including Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and stores within Circuit City, as well as at authorized retailers including Best Buy and participating RadioShack locations. Summer Nears and Already Sports Illustrated(R) Makes a Statement on Sprint PCS Vision(SM) Phones Reaching Gold Status

Sprint PCS Vision customers have taken Sports Illustrated to “Gold Status” with more than 500K screen savers purchased for the personalization of their mobile phones

As many anticipate nicer weather, beaches and extra time to relax, Sprint PCS Vision customers are adding a summer touch to their mobile phones. Today, Sprint (NYSE:FON) announced that Sprint PCS Vision customers recently surpassed 500K purchases of available Sports Illustrated Swimsuit screen savers, provided by Summus, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: SMMU) , a leading provider of mobile media applications that optimize the consumer wireless experience, for the customization of their mobile phone’s screen.

“Mobile phones are a fun and very personal device that most of us carry everyday,” said John Burris, director - Wireless Data Services, Sprint. “Many people want that device to reflect their likes, hobbies and affiliations, and Sprint offers fun and unique content that meet these customer interests.”

“Summus is dedicated to creating personalization applications that are content-rich and that offer customers a unique one-of-a-kind choice selection,” said Gary Ban, CEO of Summus, Inc. “Reaching Gold status with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit screen savers on Sprint is an example of how that strategy has been successful for us.”

Sports Illustrated joins SpongeBob SquarePants (produced by Nickelodeon in collaboration with Faith West); BlingPix(TM) (provided by LANA/BlingTones(TM)); and Graffiti-style art, Socially Hazardous (a popular sticker brand), and Devil Art screen savers (all provided by Airborne Entertainment) in reaching “Gold” status on the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.

Sprint is leading the industry in personalization with color devices, including the Sprint PCS Phone SCP-200 by Sanyo and the Sprint PCS Vision Phone VI-2300 by Sanyo that together come in a total of nine colors, as well as color accessories, including designer cases by Dooney & Bourke. On the content front, Sprint offers more than a thousand screen savers to choose from, including models, rock stars and celebs; urban images; college and sports team logos; and Picture Mail(SM) photos, as well as recently added “Natural Wonders” (storms, volcanoes, etc.) and “Cartoons and Comics.” Sprint was the first U.S. carrier to introduce Music Tones, real song ringers that are available for purchase on virtually all Sprint PCS Vision Phones.

“It’s simple to change a ringer or screen saver to fit your mood or lifestyle,” said Burris. “Customers can express themselves and identify callers in their mobile phone address book by assigning different images or ringers from an array of options.”

To access screen savers on the phone, select Menu/Downloads/Screen Savers and Get New. Screen savers range in price from $1.50-$2.50. Laplink Everywhere 4 brings remote PC access to Windows Mobile 5

Laplink’s “Anytime, Anywhere” remote PC access solution, Laplink Everywhere 4, is fully compatible with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5, providing complete remote access to PCs using a Windows Mobile 5 device.

Laplink Software announced today that their newest remote access solution, Laplink Everywhere 4, is fully compatible with Microsoft’s newest mobile device operating system.

Laplink Everywhere 4 provides complete access to a remote PC from any web-enabled device, with special functionality for mobile users. Instead of requiring handheld users to utilize a cumbersome remote control session on a PDA screen (as competing products such as GoToMyPC do), Laplink Everywhere 4 provides a special web-based interface for mobile users. This includes full integration with Google Desktop Search, providing unmatched efficiency for finding email and files on the remote PC. The user can then respond to email, update PIM data, and download or forward files straight from the browser, which allows for maximum utility over minimal bandwidth.

“Laplink Everywhere 4 provides users with a remote control experience that’s competitive with GoToMyPC, and also includes mobile accessibility and functionality you just can’t get from any other remote access solution,” said Mauricio Freitas, Editor of Geekzone, a web site focused on mobile products.

Thomas Koll, CEO of Laplink, explained, “We have been leaders in connectivity for over 22 years. ‘Anytime, anywhere’ connectivity to remote resources is becoming more and more of a necessity for an increasingly mobile workforce, and handheld devices such as those using Windows Mobile 5 will play an increasingly important role in the future of connectivity.”

The complementary relationship between Windows Mobile 5 and Laplink Everywhere 4 is a natural extension of the ongoing partnership between Microsoft and Laplink. Laplink has worked closely with Microsoft for many years, dating back to the DOS days, and earlier this month Laplink announced that Microsoft had invested in the company.

Laplink Everywhere 4 provides access to a user’s remote PC files, email, Internet favorites, contacts, notes, tasks and calendar from any web-enabled device with fast, streamlined access to remote data. Laplink Everywhere 4 also offers a host of unique features, such as searchable access to remote data using Google Desktop Search and the ability to respond to email and download or forward files to other recipients straight from the web interface, without the need to launch a remote control session. Another feature designed specifically for mobile users, “Laplink Companion”, provides the ability to read and respond to downloaded email and manage PIM data while offline, then send emails and update PIM data when next online.

A 15-day free trial of Laplink Everywhere 4 is available at www.ll2go.com or www.laplink.com. Prices for Laplink Everywhere 4 are significantly lower than those of its competitors, with prices starting at just $8.95 per month or $44.95 per year.

SanDisk Introduces 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo Game Card for Sony PSP Owners

SanDisk Also Begins Shipping Other Memory Stick PRO Duo Card Capacities to Consumer Electronics Retailers, Video/Games Stores and Discount Department Stores

Responding to stronger-than-expected consumer demand for high-capacity flash memory cards that are needed for music and video-playing in Sony’s fast-selling PlayStation Portable (PSP), SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today introduced a 2-gigabyte (GB)* Memory Stick PRO Duo™ Gaming Card to provide PSP owners with plenty of removable storage for video clips, MP3 music tracks, digital still photos and game data. The announcement was made at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 ), where SanDisk is showing its gaming cards and accessories in Kentia Hall, Meeting Room 7008 of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

SanDisk is working on increasing its production of new 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo Gaming Cards, as well as other capacities, in an effort to meet demand from major electronics retailers, video game outlets and discount department stores in North America, Japan and elsewhere in Asia where the PSP has been introduced. Gaming cards will be available at numerous retailers including Best Buy, Circuit City, EB Games (Electronics Boutique) and GameStop.

The 2GB card, which is expected to ship in July, will carry a suggested retail price of $349.99. Other capacities in the Memory Stick PRO Duo Gaming Card line range from $39.99 for 128 megabytes (MB)* to $139.99 for 1GB.

“We’ve had numerous calls from interested consumers and retailers asking about the availability of our highest-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo cards, and we’re working as quickly as possible to put inventory on retail shelves,” said Greg Rhine, SanDisk’s senior vice president of worldwide sales. “Since the PSP has limited on-board storage, it is generating strong demand for high-capacity flash memory cards for expanded memory, and we expect this situation to continue as the popularity of the PSP spreads globally.”

Christina Day, SanDisk’s product marketing manager for the gaming card line, said early sell-through reports from retailers indicate that nearly 20 percent of all PSP buyers are also purchasing extra memory cards, but she expects that to reach 50 percent over time. Sony, which reported sales of 600,000 units in the U.S. in the first week of its introduction, recently announced that the heavy demand in Asia and the U.S. has caused the company to postpone its release in Europe until September.

SanDisk co-developed the Memory Stick PRO format with Sony. In January, SanDisk introduced the new gaming line of Memory Stick PRO Duo cards in semi-transparent neon colors.

While the PSP is aimed at the fast-growing handheld gaming device market, recent purchasers have learned that its numerous other features - including playback of movies, music, digital still images, video clips and game data - require large amounts of memory. The PSP uses a proprietary storage medium called Universal Media Disc (UMD) for movies and games, but UMD discs are not recordable or writable.

SanDisk is the original inventor of flash storage cards and is the world’s largest supplier of flash data storage card products, using its patented, high-density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA and has operations worldwide, with more than half its sales outside the U.S
