The wait is over: Opera’s Web browser now on Windows Mobile!

Opera Software today released the latest version of the Opera Web browser, Opera 8, for Windows Mobile, finally enabling Smartphone users to surf the Web with speed and ease on their mobile devices. Opera’s deployment to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform is a result of customers’ and operators’ demand for a fast and full-featured Web browser on Windows Mobile devices.”Originally, we had not planned to make Opera available on the Windows Mobile platform, but users kept asking for it because they were disappointed with the far from satisfactory performance of the browser that came shipped on their devices,” says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “We are very pleased to offer the speedy Opera Web experience to Windows Mobile Smartphone users, and we are certain that operators will enjoy added benefit as Opera on their subscribers’ Smartphones will increase data traffic and offer compelling use-cases for these devices.”

Two technical previews of the Opera Web browser for Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone were released in autumn 2004. The previews were enthusiastically received by 120,000 end-users who downloaded, tested and provided valuable feedback. Opera 8 for Windows Mobile is based on Opera’s latest core technology, proving that Opera’s embedded deliveries are in synch with desktop browser developments.

Opera 8 for Windows Mobile offers Smartphone users more speed, smooth usability and rich content display as they access the full Internet, creating a Web experience unlike any other available for these devices. The browser supports all major Web standards, including CSS2, DOM 2 and JavaScript. Based on Opera’s new core code, Opera 8 for Windows Mobile also includes the latest version of Opera’s unique Small-Screen Rendering (TM) which dynamically reformats Web pages to fit the width of any screen, eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling.

Sprint and SANYO Expand Personalization Options with New Multimedia Phone that Offers Interchangeable Color ‘Accent Plates’

New Sprint PCS Vision(SM) Multimedia Phone MM-8300 by SANYO Improves Upon Successful Sprint PCS Vision Picture Phone (SANYO 8100) and Sprint PCS Vision Picture Phone PM-8200 by SANYO Models by Adding a Built-In Media Player and Video Mail Functionality in a Stylish Handset

Color can spark emotion. Now, adding that spark to your mobile phone is as easy as slipping on an “Accent Plate” — an interchangeable color trim element designed for use with the Sprint (NYSE:FON) PCS Vision Multimedia Phone MM-8300 by SANYO, which is expected to be available in stores and online the week of July 11. The MM-8300 by SANYO, being offered in three dynamic “base” colors — Silver, Atlantic Blue, and Red Hot — comes standard with two Accent Plate color choices, and a multitude of other Accent Plate colors will be sold separately. Mixing and matching the base colors with the Accent Plates results in a host of distinctive personalization choices.

The MM-8300 by SANYO features a built-in media player and offers customers access to 19 channels of high-quality video and audio on demand through the Sprint PCS Vision Multimedia Service. With this optional service, customers can keep informed with live news from FOX News Channel Live or stay on top of the hottest music with Music Choice. They can also entertain themselves or their kids with classic “Looney Tunes” cartoons or preview what movies are coming out from major motion-picture studios Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Independent Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Universal Pictures.

“The MM-8300 by SANYO offers the best of what customers want in wireless — high-quality video on demand, music on demand and imaging,” said Jeff Hallock, vice president - Product Marketing and Strategy, Sprint. “The design, colors, features and price of this phone make it perfect for anyone wanting a great wireless experience.”

“SANYO is changing the consumers’ experience of owning a mobile phone,” said Andy Kodera, senior vice president and general manager of SANYO Fisher Company’s Wireless Communications Division. “The MM-8300 by SANYO has evolved from the popular PM-8200 by SANYO to the present by offering consumers the creativity of color choices and the excitement of multimedia. It’s really amazing what a little accent of color can do to change the style of a phone.”

The MM-8300 by SANYO, as well as three other models by SANYO, comes in multiple colors, making it easy for family members to own the same phone but in different colors, giving each family member their own unique identity with their mobile phone. Some of these phones also come with interchangeable color faceplates or color Accent Plates for additional color variety. Leatrice Eiseman, color specialist and author of five books on color, including Color Answer Book, said in a recent television segment that up to sixty percent of the reason we buy a product is based on color.

“The ability to change color can improve our mood,” said Leatrice Eiseman. “Mobile phones are increasingly becoming a fashion accessory, and fashion trends change. Mobile phones that offer color variety, like the MM-8300 by SANYO, allow us to use color to express ourselves as our mood and styles change.”

The MM-8300 by SANYO has a rich feature set, including a built-in camcorder, VGA camera with flash and digital zoom, and a high-quality speakerphone. It supports Sprint PCS Vision, a service that allows customers to browse the Internet at speeds faster than most dial-up connections; check email and send instant messages; and download Music Tones, voice ringers, and full-color, graphically-rich games and screen savers, all on the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.

The MM-8300 by SANYO is Picture Mail(SM)-, Video Mail-, Sprint PCS Ready Link(SM)- and SMS-text-messaging-capable. It will be available in Sprint Stores nationwide, third party retailers and online ( http://www.sprintpcs.com/ ) for $299.99 or $149.99 after rebate the week of July 11.

SanDisk Introduces FlashCP — Technology To Put Student Textbooks on a USB Flash Drive

SanDisk Introduces FlashCP Technology Infrastructure Designed To Securely Distribute Copyrighted Digital Content For Flash Cards And USB Drives

SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today introduced FlashCP™, a unique proprietary content processing technology designed to let students easily and safely download and store their textbooks, novels, learning tools and more on a USB flash drive. While protecting the copyrighted content of publishers, FlashCP aims to create a “digital backpack” that weighs ounces instead of pounds. The announcement was made at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), where SanDisk is exhibiting in booths 26 and 28 in the Philadelphia Convention Center.

Originally developed under the name of BookLocker™, FlashCP was created by MDRM, a privately held Israeli company that SanDisk acquired last December. “In introducing FlashCP, SanDisk has successfully completed the integration of MDRM’s technology into our product line” said Yoram Cedar, SanDisk’s senior vice president of emerging markets and engineering. “Our mantra is ‘Store Your World In Ours,’and now that world includes not just photos and files but also copyrighted content,” he added.

SanDisk’s latest innovation approaches flash cards as part of a content delivery ecosystem, and encourages usage of high capacity flash cards and USB drives. “SanDisk is the first to look at the specific needs of students,” said Wes Brewer, SanDisk’s vice president of consumer product marketing. “SanDisk is adding FlashCP to the Cruzer® USB family, specifically addressing a market segment of over 65 million American students.” FlashCP Cruzer USB drives will be launching at selected U.S. retailers for the coming school year.

“With FlashCP, we expect that students will be able to store a year’s worth of textbooks and learning materials on a small, pocket-sized flash drive that can be taken home or carried between classes,” said Dan Harkabi, SanDisk’s vice president of secure content solutions. “At the same time,” he added, “we believe that FlashCP provides textbook publishers and other content providers with a safe way to electronically distribute copyrighted works directly to consumers. It is also designed to offer secure, web-based updates as frequently as required. This gives publishers new and incremental revenue streams for selling content,” he said.

SanDisk is partnering with publishing houses, media providers and educators to create a comprehensive repository of digital content that is both fun and educational. This online library of titles will be directly accessible by FlashCP USB drives each time a device is used on a PC that is connected to the Internet.

“A student carrying a FlashCP-powered drive could use a variety of books and learning tools such as science and math textbooks, reading assignments, dictionary, web content, multimedia clips and applications such as a calculator,” said Jennifer Moore- Evans, SanDisk’s director of education. A FlashCP-powered drive also can store materials created by teachers, including learning modules, homework, tests and study guides, she said. In fact, instructors and administrators can upload content to SanDisk’s servers and thus make course content seamlessly available to their classes and other faculty.

SanDisk is the original inventor of flash storage cards and is the world leader of flash storage cards and USB drives, using its patented, high-density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA and has operations worldwide, with more than half of its sales outside the U.S.

Bluelounge Launches Cableyoyo

The first elegant cord management device for digital products is finally here. Conceived and produced by California based designer Dominic Symons of bluelounge (www.bluelounge.com), the idea for cableyoyo sparked from trying to find a elegant solution to the excessive number of small cords we all seem to gather, which clutter our desks and tangle in our bags: as yet no one seemed to be doing anything about it. Bluelounge has therefore designed, patented, produced and is now launching Cableyoyo onto the world-wide market; the product began shipping to stores in June and has already received an incredible response from store buyers, equipment suppliers & and end-users alike.Cableyoyo has received worldwide acclaim because it is a product that suits everyone with fixed & mobile electronic devices. It is so stylish that it blends seamlessly with any electronic device and so discreet it can disappear in-between products. Finally, it also protects the cords from damage due to twisting and tangling. We anticipate that everyone, for home, office or on-the-move use will want several Cableyoyos: multi-packs and colors are therefore available.

This “accessory for accessories”, is priced at only $4.99 retail and is quickly becoming a “must-have” item for iPod users and others with those “wireless” devices that include 6ft of cord with their electrical chargers, let alone those for data transfer and synchronization.

For more detailed information about the product, the design studio or anything that may be relevant to your upcoming story, please visit www.cableyoyo.com or contact us by email.

Looks Great, Works Brilliantly
A perfect product to enhance the digital lifestyle, Cableyoyo’s minimalist aesthetic seamlessly merges form and function to create an elegant solution to a practical challenge.

Hide and Stick
Sold with a small adhesive attachment that can be stuck to virtually any surface, Cableyoyo keeps neatly wound cord off your desktop, inconspicuously tucked away.

Clutter-Free Zone
Ideal for use at home or on the road. Cableyoyo is designed to neatly store cord that’s sitting still or traveling light.

Even the Cordless Have Cords
Laptop computers, chargers for cell phones, digital cameras, and other “wireless” products also require desktop cord management. Cableyoyo stores up to six feet of coiled wire in the smallest space possible.

Got To Go
Cableyoyo is designed for life on the move. Wind your cord as quickly and easily as you would a toy yoyo, then just drop it into a pocket or purse.

From Wireless to Wire Mess
Cordless devices are wonderful when traveling, but they can create a tangle of unsightly, unmanaged cords when they’re recharging at home. Cableyoyo neatens up your home work space by storing unused cord and attaching to almost any surface beneath or near your desk.

About Cableyoyo
Our increasing dependence on digital products is creating a persistent and growing nuisance: a mounting pile of tangled cords. Even wireless products require electric chargers. CABLEYOYO brings order to that chaos, cleans up your desktop, stores your wires neatly, and makes travel with cables hassle-free. Cableyoyo is an ultra-thin plastic case for the management of electronic cords.

The Design
The essence of cableyoyo is its true, clean coiling capacity. Neatly spiraling cord onto a single plane, it effectively conceals 6-feet (1.8 meters) of electronic cord in the smallest space possible while still remaining fully functional. Cableyoyo may be used in transit, as a stand-alone container, or fixed, to neatly store unsightly cables at home and in the office. Cableyoyo’s minimalist design relieves the eyesore of tangled cords. Cableyoyo is designed by Dominic Symons of Bluelounge in Pasadena, California.

The Intended User
Cableyoyo was designed to be both universal and inexpensive. Cableyoyo appeals to all users with electronic and multi-media products such as laptops, iPods, workstations, game boxes, cell phones, PDAs, music players, cameras, DVDs, etc., as well as their peripherals; mouse, docking station, speakers, headphones, modems, printers, chargers, scanners, and switches.

The Purpose:

    1. PROTECTION: The “flat wound” cable spool concept protects the fragile wires and connectors from damage due to twisting and tangling. In most cases cables will be used “wound” by the user. Yet, even unwound, the cable remains untwisted due to the flat winding design.

    2. MOBILITY: Because each cable is individually coiled, lightweight, slim, and easy to use, Cableyoyo is convenient for packing, transporting and deploying cables in a minimal space. It also fits unobtrusively into a shirt pocket!

    3. FIXED DEVICES: An inconspicuous adhesive clip, delivered with Cableyoyo, allows it to be permanently or temporarily directly mounted on walls, furniture, or computer peripherals. Unclipping the Cableyoyo from its mounting is also easy.

About Bluelounge
Bluelounge is a multidisciplinary design studio founded by product designer Dominic Symons and graphic designer Melissa Sunjaya. The partnership creates a true synergy of product, graphic, and interactive design, as well as original illustration.

Cableyoyo is the first of many products conceived, designed, and produced by the studio that are marketed directly to the end user.

Although the partners operate within different design disciplines, their shared sensibilities produce works characterized by functional simplicity and their passion for personal expression. The studio’s work draws upon a rigorous and experimental cross-fertilization of disciplines, and gains immeasurably from two distinct, compatible perspectives.

Bluelounge creates a wide range of consumer and industrial products, sophisticated furniture concepts, functional-chic footwear, fine art books, graphic identities, advertising, packaging, and interactive multimedia narratives. With a diverse international client base, the BlueLounge aesthetic is expressed through the products of Flototto (Germany), Airwalk International (USA), and Max Design (Italy), as well as in the corporate and product identities of Tare7 (USA), The Petersen Automotive Museum (USA), Trina Turk (USA), and Panasonic Design Company (Japan).

NEW JAVA STANDARD FOR MOBILE 3D AUDIO CONTENT ENABLED AND SUPPORTED BY SONAPTIC

Sonaptic Limited, the leading developer of advanced 3D audio technologies for handheld devices, today announced completion of its JSR-234 Audio Engine and its involvement and support for developing this new standard for multimedia and 3D audio on mobile phones and convergence handsets using Java™. Sonaptic™ were recommended as participants in the Expert Group by Vodafone® (Newbury, England) and Sun Microsystems® (Mountain View, CA) and played a major role in the development of the audio portion of this standard within the Java Community ProcessSM (JCPSM ), in tandem with Nokia® (Helsinki, Finland) (NYSE:NOK) and Ericsson® (Stockholm, Sweden) (NASDAQ:ERICY) - a testimony to Sonaptic’s acknowledged leadership in 3D positional audio for mobile devices.Sonaptic’s 3D Audio Engine fully supports the 3D audio and music capabilities defined in the JSR-234 Advanced Multimedia Supplements API Final Release, announced by Sun Microsystems yesterday. The Sonaptic 3D Audio Engine is currently licensed and shipping in mobile phones from NEC® (Tokyo), Fujitsu® (Tokyo) and Mitsubishi® (Tokyo) and will soon be available from a still to be announced fourth vendor.

The JSR-234 Advanced Multimedia Supplements API enables mobile devices to access a full range of multimedia technologies through a standardized Java API, including camera, tuner, image manipulation, and the 3D positional audio and music capabilities as delivered by Sonaptic’s advanced technology.

JSR-234 will allow game developers and studios to take advantage of 3D sound technology for a fully immersive experience. The standard allows games or other content to easily support the full range of Java-enabled mobile devices without forcing the developer to program for a specific model or chipset.

Using Sonaptic’s 3D Positional Audio technology, an application has realtime control of multiple sound channels positioned and moving dynamically around the user, providing an immersive, 3-dimensional sound environment (as opposed to the stereo expansion features typically found on low-end consumer devices). This allows for amazing games effects and extends the game play area outside of the relatively small screen size of the mobile device. Sonaptic’s technology works equally well on both stereo headsets and on stereo microspeakers built into the device. Sonaptic’s technology is portable and has been especially crafted for the low-power, low-resource requirements of the mobile device environment. It is ideally suited for use on mobile phones, personal video and music players, PDAs and gaming platforms.

Sonaptic recently presented a paper entitled ‘3D Audio for Mobile Devices via Java’ describing the specification at the 118th AES Conference in Barcelona, together with other Expert Group members Nokia and Ericsson.

Handset vendors supporting JSR-234 as part of the initial Expert Group include:

  • Ericsson Mobile Platforms (Lund, Sweden)
  • Motorola® (Schaumberg, IL)
  • Nokia Corporation (Helsinki, Finland)
  • Sharp® Labs of America (Camas, WA)
  • Siemens® AG (Munich, Germany)

There are already an estimated 600 million Java-enabled mobile devices currently deployed worldwide, and it is expected that JSR-234 will also form an important part of the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA) in providing a common platform for developers of Mobile Java applications under J2MEâ„¢ for many years to come.

“We are very privileged to have participated in the development of the audio portions of this breakthrough API alongside mobile industry leaders Nokia and Ericsson,” said David Monteith, Sonaptic’s Managing Director and co-founder. “Our history in the development of 3D audio technologies for the mobile industry and the deep background of our team in the game console and PC sound card industries brought a wealth of expertise to the development process. We will continue to work with the Expert Group members to develop JSR-234 into a strong platform for developers of advanced 3D games and other applications as well as continuing to enhance our 3D Audio Engine to take full advantage of revisions and new capabilities of the standard.”

More information on the Java Community ProcessSM (JCPSM ), JSR-234 and MSA can be found on the JCP website at http://www.jcp.org.
