AVANQUEST SOFTWARE INTRODUCES RINGTONE CREATION SOFTWARE

Ringtone Media Studio Allows Users to Create Custom Ringtones, Wallpapers and Videos

Avanquest Software, a leading developer and publisher of utility, mobility and productivity software for the global PC market, today introduced Ringtone Media Studio, the first all-in-one mobile phone ringtone creation and image-editing suite for the North American market.

Targeting a U.S. consumer ringtone market forecasted to exceed $500 million in 2005, Ringtone Media Studio is compatible with more than 450 popular mobile phones, enabling millions of consumers to personalize their mobile phones without the repetitive high cost of purchasing digital content.

Ringtone Media Studio provides everything consumers need to create high-quality real music ringtones from their existing music collections and customize polyphonic ringtones. It also allows them to personalize their phones with wallpapers using their favorite photos or digital images from the Web and includes a Video Studio that edits real video clips and transfers them to the mobile phone.

Supporting handsets from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Siemens and other manufacturers, Ringtone Media Studio enables one-click transfer of users’ ringtones, wallpapers and videos to their cell phones via Bluetooth, Infrared or optional cable. The software automatically selects the digital media format appropriate for the user’s phone and also allows users to save their customized creations as files on their PC.

“Ringtone Media Studio eliminates ringtone and wallpaper download fees and recurring mobile content subscription charges, giving consumers the freedom to control the content on their mobile phone just like they do on their PCs,” said Bob Lang, president, Avanquest Mobility Software Division. “With three editing studios and a free media library this is the true all-in-one creative cost-saving solution mobile phone users have been seeking.”

The centerpiece of Ringtone Media Studio, the Melody Studio, includes a real music mixer to convert CDs and MP3s into ringtones as well as a polyphonic ringtone editor to customize MIDI files. The software even comes complete with a free 5,000-piece online media library of wallpapers, ringtones and video samples (www.ringtonemediastudio.com), allowing users to begin customizing their phones immediately. Additional free content is added regularly to the Online Media Library to ensure users never run out of creative options.

Once users have selected digital content from their own files or the free media library, they can personalize their selections using three powerful editing studios:

  • Melody Studio: Create custom ringtones from MP3s, audio CDs and MIDI polyphonic files; modify existing files (a mixing console, audio effects and voice recorder are included) and automatically convert them to the user’s unique mobile phone format.
  • Image Studio: Easily design and modify mobile wallpapers and screen-savers; touch-up images, photos, and screen captures stored on a PC, crop; add special effects, frames, symbols and text. A preview screen verifies the image is rendered properly for the customer’s mobile phone display.
  • Video Studio: Start with an original video clip or modify one from the online media library. Edit to length, and then add text, sound, music, special effects, transitions, etc.
  • The product is available over the Web and at thousands of retail outlets across North America, at $19.95. A free trial version is available

Sharp to Mass Produce an LCD with Switchable Viewing Angle

Ideal LCD for Mobile Devices to Prevent Snooping

Sharp Corporation and Sharp Laboratories of Europe, Ltd. have developed a new LCD, which enables the LCD to be switched between a wide viewing angle and narrow viewing angle by means of an electrical ON/OFF switching action. This will allow people to view email and other private information on portable devices such as mobile phones and notebook PCs with peace of mind without having to worry about others in the vicinity snooping to peek at what is being displayed on the LCD screen. Sharp will begin mass production of this display beginning in July 2005.

As the ubiquitous network society fast becomes a reality, information can be readily accessed in nearly any setting, and the demand for personal information terminals, such as mobile phones, notebook PCs, and PDAs, is growing rapidly. At the same time, there is an increasing need to provide portable devices like mobile phones and notebook PCs, which are frequently used to handle private information/data, with the capability to “veil” the display so that the screen content cannot be seen by other people in the immediate area.

The new LCD adds proprietary technologies such as a switching liquid crystal material overlaid on an ordinary TFT LCD so that light is prevented from going to the left or right, thus turning a wide viewing angle to a narrow viewing angle. This will allow people to use mobile devices with peace of mind, since they can change the viewing angle setting depending on the personal nature of the content they are viewing.

With today’s emphasis on safe handling of personal information, the switchable LCD is sure to contribute to increasing demand as an indispensable component of mobile devices.

SD CARD ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FINAL APPROVAL OF THE microSD SPECIFICATION - WORLD’S SMALLEST REMOVABLE STORAGE CARD

The SD Card Association (SDA) today announced the final approval of the microSD specification that is now available for immediate use. The microSD card, the world’s smallest removable storage card provides full compatibility and interoperability with current SD devices. The card is fully compatible with SanDisk’s TransFlash™ cards, over 5 million of which have shipped to date and is supported in 40+ handsets announced by manufacturers such as Motorola, Samsung, LG, Kyocera, and Sagem. In the mobile phone market, a small sized memory card is needed by handset vendors to provide memory expansion with the least impact on overall size. The addition of digital audio and cameras is driving this need for more memory in mobile phones. Conventional memory cards are however too big in dimensions for small mobile phone application. Hence, the SDA, with increasing focus on the mobile phone market has developed a new small sized SD card.

“We welcome the adoption of microSD as the new industry standard for mobile devices,” said Yoram Cedar an SDA board member and senior vice president of engineering and emerging markets at SanDisk. “History has proven that open standards benefit both consumers and manufacturers who prefer a single, broadly supported standard.”

Paul Reinhardt, newly appointed executive director for SDA, said, “Adoption of the microSD card specification is a key part of the SDA’s strategy to address the growing needs of the mobile devices market. As the preferred memory card standard of both the consumer electronics and mobile phone markets, the SDA continues to lead the way in providing the specifications needed to further expand the capabilities of products in these markets.”

The SD Memory Card, along with the miniSD and, now, microSD cards, is the dominant memory format of choice for the wireless communications industry. The format is supported by SDA members Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, NEC and other leading marketers of SD and miniSDâ„¢-enabled mobile phones around the world.

The full interoperability of the microSD with TransFlash means that the microSD card can be used immediately in the millions of handsets that currently use TransFlash cards. Existing supporters of TransFlash will migrate their products to microSD. In the meantime, TransFlash cards will operate in new microSD hosts and microSD cards will work in existing TransFlash hosts.

About the SDA
The SD Card Association (SDA) is an open industry standards organization established in January 2000 by Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), SanDisk and Toshiba, and is supported by a consortium of over 800 companies. The SDA’s mission is to set industry standards and promote the SD Memory Card’s wide acceptance in a variety of applications. SD Memory Card standards are currently being built into a wide range of new digital products such as cellular phones, audio players, automotive multimedia systems, handheld PCs and digital video and still cameras. By June 30, 2005, SD application products (miniSD host products included) that have been introduced into the global market have totaled 4,066 models from 288 brands. The Association’s web site can be accessed at www.sdcard.org for more information about the SDA. Parties interested in joining the SDA are encouraged to visit the web site or contact Sarah Barbuscia, SDA membership services, at 1-925-275-6615 or sbarbuscia@sdcard.org. Another SDA Web site is www.sdcard.com, which showcases available SD products worldwide and SD interoperability between devices.

EATONI MAIL MAKES MOBILE PHONE EMAILING EASY

Eatoni Ergonomics, the software developer that makes it easy to enter text on hand-held devices, has developed a new multi-language mobile email application, Eatoni Mail, which simplifies the sending and reading of email on a mobile phone. Howard Gutowitz, Eatoni CEO announced today.Eatoni Mail runs on the BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) platform, and uses Eatoni’s LetterWise predictive text solution. Eatoni Mail makes it easier to enter email messages on a mobile phone by reducing the number of keystrokes used to type text on a telephone keypad. It also can instantly increase the font size of words appearing on the phone’s screen, eliminating the chore of attempting to read the small print usually associated with text on phones and making it particularly valuable to people on both ends of the age spectrum.

Eatoni’s LetterWise is a modeless, “what you see is what you get” text entry system that is even simpler than multi-tap. LetterWise needs about half as many keystrokes as regular multi-tap. With LetterWise it’s easy to enter proper names, URL’s, slang and unconventional language on a cell phone or other handheld device.

Eatoni Email is equipped to handle incoming mail in many different encodings, of particular value for languages with non-Latin scripts.

“Eatoni Mail solves the problem of how to write and read email on the common mobile phone,” Gutowitz said. “Designed for the average consumer, Eatoni Mail allows phone users to check their email and send messages through any email program running over a POP server, such as Gmail, Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail and AOL. And the ability to convert text to a large font makes mobile phone-based emailing accessible to all age groups.”

The first version of Eatoni Mail works in three languages, English, Spanish and Russian. LetterWise works in 150 different languages, and Eatoni Mail can be tailored to almost any language.

According to a recent study CDMA phones capable of running the BREW platform make up about 20 percent of all handset shipments per year. That could be as many as 144 million globally in 2005, and around half that are in the U.S.

“Eatoni’s goal has always been to simplify the text writing experience on handheld devices,” Gutowitz said. “Delivering on BREW a better way to write and read email will help us achieve our mission of taking away the frustration associated with entering text on handheld devices, and making typing on a phone as easy as typing words on a desk top keyboard.”

ROK PLAYER MOVES INTO KOREA WITH FULL-LENGTH MOVIES AND MUSIC VIDEO ALBUMS FOR MOBILES

ROK Entertainment Group, the developer of ‘ROK Player’ technology which allows full-length movies and music video albums to play on mobile phones, today announced the creation of a Joint Venture company in Korea aimed at marketing ROK Player across Asia.

“Because the Asian market is of such enormous importance to us” said Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman of ROK “we decided it really needs to be managed from the region itself - hence the creation of ROK Korea”.

Since filing international patents on the new technology developed by ROK to allow the full-screen play of high-definition content on compatible mobile phones, the company has licensed a large portfolio of titles to include movies, music video albums, sports DVD’s and TV comedies from such companies as MTV, Granada ITV, Sanctuary records and Ministry of Sound.

The new company, based in Seoul, will be tasked not just with marketing the existing titles on memory cards in Korea, it will also oversee the licensing of new, regionally-appropriate content as well as the introduction of ROK Player into other territories across Asia.

Joong Hwan Kim, CEO of ROK Korea reports “It’s an idea whose time has come and we’re delighted to be partnering with ROK on the introduction of such an exciting new media vehicle into Asia”.

“ROK Player chips are, effectively, DVD’s for the mobile” added Kendrick “there’s no streaming or expensive downloads involved and everyone with a multimedia handset is now able to watch, for example, their favourite bands playing music, rather than just listening to the music through another device”.

Earlier this year ROK announced the licensing of the worlds first full-length movie – The Shawshank Redemption - and the worlds first full-length music video album – Ministry of Sound ‘Big Tunes’ - on memory cards. The first 12 ROK Player titles are now on sale in selected phone shops across the UK and online at www.rokplayer.com.

FEDERAL COURT REINSTATES PATENT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT FILED BY SANDISK AGAINST RITEK, PRETEC AND MEMOREX

SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) announced today that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) on July 8, 2005 reversed a summary judgment ruling of non-infringement by a California District Court regarding SanDisk’s U.S. Patent No. 5,602,987 (”‘987 Patent”). As a result of the CAFC decision, SanDisk will renew the prosecution of its infringement claims against Ritek, Pretec and Memorex flash memory cards. The CAFC ruling supports SanDisk’s interpretation of the key inventive features claimed in the ‘987 patent, and thereby eliminates the primary non-infringement argument of Ritek, Pretec and Memorex. SanDisk expects to seek summary judgment of infringement against the accused Ritek, Pretec and Memorex flash memory cards. The ‘987 Patent (which was issued on Feb. 11, 1997) teaches and claims important aspects of the emulation of a magnetic disk drive in removable flash memory storage products, such as SDâ„¢ Cards, Memory Stick Proâ„¢, USB flash drives, certain portable flash audio players, CompactFlash®, and MultiMediaCardsâ„¢ among others. The pioneering inventions of the ‘987 patent enable flash memory cards and other storage products to achieve enhanced performance, reliability and host platform compatibility.

“We are very pleased with the decision handed down by the CAFC and believe this reaffirms the important and fundamental nature of SanDisk’s patented technology,” said E. Earle Thompson, SanDisk’s Chief Intellectual Property Counsel. “SanDisk will continue to protect its investment in intellectual property and vigorously enforce its patents against companies that seek to use SanDisk’s patented technology without a license.”

SanDisk is the original inventor of flash storage cards and is the world’s largest supplier of flash data storage card products, using it patented, high-density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA and has operations worldwide, with more than half its sales outside the U.S.

The matters discussed in this news release contain forward looking statements that are subject to certain risks and uncertainties as described under the caption, “Factors That May Affect Future Results,” specifically the section entitled “Risks Related to Our Intellectual Property” in SanDisk’s annual report on Form 10-K and quarterly reports on Form 10-Q, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. SanDisk assumes no obligation to update the information in this release.

Public Encouraged to Donate Used Wireless Phones to Benefit Children Affected by Domestic Violence

Verizon Wireless Teams with Cellar Door Concerts and Samaritan House to Fund Back-to-School Shopping for Youngest Victims

For most families, shopping for back-to-school clothes is a late summer ritual. For area children living in domestic violence shelters, however, a back-to-school wardrobe is just another unattainable dream. This summer, the company, through its national phone recycling program, HopeLine(R), is asking the public to help dreams become reality through one simple act: the donation of a no-longer-used wireless phone.

For the second year in a row, Verizon Wireless, Cellar Door Concerts and Virginia Beach’s Samaritan House are joining forces to urge music fans to donate their no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories. Beginning July 15, phones can be dropped off at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater box office and at local company Communications Stores.

Verizon Wireless will contribute $5 for each wireless phone collected, up to $7,500, to be donated to the Virginia Beach shelter, Samaritan House. The money will be used to buy back-to-school wardrobes for children living at the Samaritan House shelter. In addition, Cellar Door Concerts, operator of the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater, will give the first 1,500 fans who donate a wireless phone one pin for free admission to all performances at the Verizon Wireless American Music Festival taking place Labor Day weekend. More information about the festival is available at http://www.beacheventsfun.com/.

Last summer, Verizon Wireless and Cellar Door Concerts also joined forces for a phone collection drive. That effort yielded more than 1,000 no-longer- used phones and accessories and resulted in a $5,000 donation from Verizon Wireless that was divided evenly between the statewide organization Virginians Against Domestic Violence and Samaritan House. This year, Verizon Wireless’ Regional President Patrick Devlin is encouraging area residents to surpass that number.

“Whether it’s in a desk drawer or in a box in the basement, most of us have don’t have to look far to find a wireless phone we’re no longer using,” said Devlin. “I know Hampton Roads residents will rise to this challenge and exceed last year’s results. I can’t think of a more worthy beneficiary for this cause.”

According to Cindee Bailey, director of development for Samaritan House, each night the shelter houses approximately 100 people, 60 of whom are children, who are either homeless or victims of domestic violence. “When they arrive at our door, often times they only have the clothes on their backs,” said Bailey. “Something as simple as new clothing for back to school helps instill in them the desire to succeed, the urge to reach their full potential. We’re very appreciative of Verizon Wireless’ continuing support through HopeLine.”

“If our involvement in this project helps build self-esteem and confidence in even one child and eases the tremendous burdens faced by women living in temporary shelter with their children, then the value of our partnership will be immeasurable,”
