Cingular Wireless Prepares Network as Hurricane Katrina Heads for Florida Panhandle

Cingular Wireless has mobilized its emergency operations team as an intensifying Hurricane Katrina barrels across the Gulf of Mexico toward the Florida Panhandle. Cingular conducts ongoing readiness drills throughout the year and has a rigorous emergency preparedness and response process in place for events like Katrina.Network preparations include the staging of 200 portable generators, more than 30,000 gallons of fuel, dozens of portable cell sites, and several hundred network technicians and engineers in the Panhandle, along the Gulf Coast and in Central Florida, to ensure customers and emergency agencies have reliable wireless service before, during and after the storm.

“After last year’s devastating hurricane season, we know all too well how critical communication is in an emergency situation, ” said Dan Norman, vice president and general manager for Cingular’s North Florida market. “For many people, their wireless phone was their only line of communication during and after the hurricanes.”

To prevent network congestion, Cingular is urging customers to keep non- emergency calls to a minimum to free up wireless networks for emergency officials and to consider text messaging as an alternate form of communication. Most wireless phones today are text messaging capable, and text messages oftentimes go through quicker than wireless voice calls during an emergency situation. If customers receive a fast busy or “your call cannot be completed at this time” recording when trying to make a voice call, they should wait 10 seconds before redialing. This allows the original call data to clear the network before the customer tries again.

Cingular also offers consumers these important tips in preparation for the storm:

  • Program all emergency contact numbers into your wireless phone. Store numbers for the police department, fire station, hospital, as well as your family members so you don’t have to think about it during and after an emergency.
  • Have a family communications plan in place. Designate someone out of the area as a central contact, and make certain all family members know who to contact if they become separated.
  • Keep your wireless phone batteries charged at all times. Have an alternate plan to recharge your battery in case of power outages.
  • Keep your wireless phone dry and protected.
  • Forward your home number to your wireless number in the event of an evacuation.
  • Check live weather and news reports available on many wireless phones with services such as MobiTV and My Cast.

PODCASTING ON MOBILE PHONES TUNES IN WITH POD2MOB SOFTWARE

SOFTWARE SUPPORTS SPRINT PCS, T-MOBILE AND CINGULAR NETWORKS

Cut the white cord. Pod2Mob (www.pod2mob.com) announced today the launch of its precedent-setting podcast streaming service that enables consumers to listen to their favorite podcasts on their mobile handsets. The launch of the free software, which is first to market, forms a new milestone for mobile media.

The power of wireless couples with the podcasting phenomenon to exponentially expand access to a new medium. The new Pod2Mob application transforms mobile handsets into a podcasting remote, capable of browsing and selecting new shows while listening to the audio directly from the phone.

“Pod2Mob turns every mobile phone into an iPod,” said Brad Zutaut, co-founder. “Until now, Podcasting has been a fun, new medium with a limited audience, but Pod2Mob has just expanded that audience beyond the elite to the mainstream.”

Built-in Audience
A marketing and cultural phenomenon, Apple’s iPod has been purchased by approximately 15M consumers while around 10M own MP3 players thus establishing the existing podcast audience estimated at 25M. The advent of Pod2Mob, however, immediately explodes the potential audience to an estimated 700M, all capable of using Pod2Mob on their mobile phones.

The world’s most popular consumer electronics device, the mobile phone, perfectly extends the explosive podcast movement beyond a single device to hundreds of models of wireless handsets.

According to Gartner Research, sales of mobile phones are set to reach one billion annually by 2009, when nearly 40 percent of the world’s population will own a mobile handset. Gartner’s findings bolster the mobile phone’s status as the world’s most popular electronic device.

Ease of Use
The Pod2Mob application downloads updated podcasts on the go and streams them to an applet on the users mobile phone. Through a thumb-friendly interface, the Pod2Mob applet puts users in full control of remote podcasting. Content can be refreshed as often as desired, but usually once a day since most podcasts are produced daily. Programs are rated by listeners for quality and popularity, and an easily accessible favorites list makes it easy to get your daily fix.

Radio alternative
Alienated by the corporate seizure of traditional broadcast radio, podcasting attracts a younger, more affluent demographic and offers the ability to listen to whatever they want, whenever they want, whether it be on the metro or on the back porch. All age groups are increasingly dissatisfied with the diversity of programming in radio. Podcasting offers a compelling alternative as it represents an interactive pull medium rather than the passive push medium of traditional radio, implying the user has genuine interest in the selected program.

Time shifting
TiVo has clearly established that consumers prefer to have their media time shifted. Pod2Mob represents the ultimate in time –and place — shifting allowing the user to listen to what they want whenever they want and wherever they want. While TiVo provided a hardware solution, Pod2Mob is quick software download that empowers hundreds of millions of people to transform the mobile phones they already have into an enormous broadcasting network overnight.

Zutaut added, “Your phone is always with you, even when you forget your iPod. We built Pod2Mob so that people with the most basic handsets could start listening to the podcast shows they are hearing so much about. If you have a phone, you don’t have to wait to sync, you can get the latest podcasts on the fly. The ability to listen to radio shows on demand increases their value significantly.”

Select Pod2Mob features:

  • Open directory where users can add their podcast feeds and the system automatically tracks updates
  • Stream any podcast to the phone
  • Rate any podcast from the phone
  • Favorites: ability for users to store a list of their favorite podcasts

U.S. Consumer Demand for Mobile Email Widespread According to New Survey

Results indicate more than 40 million U.S. consumers want mobile email; 82% only want the emails they choose

Survey results released today point to a significant market opportunity for consumer mobile email. However, unlike users of corporate wireless email solutions, consumers overwhelmingly want to be able to control who they receive emails from on their cell phone and cite “low cost” as a very important mobile email feature. The online poll of adult consumers in the United States was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq:CPTH)

The survey results reveal a potential market size of more than 40 million* U.S. consumers, aged 18 or older, who would like email access on their mobile phone. More than three quarters (82 percent) of survey respondents want to be able to choose which emails reach them on their cell phone, citing emails from their spouse or significant other as most important.

“The polling results clearly show that consumers have unique needs and behaviors, and that the solutions business executives use will not satisfy the mass market,” said Mike Serbinis, CTO of Critical Path, a leading provider of messaging software and services. “Consumers don’t want to receive every email from their regular inbox on their phone, especially when most of it is spam. They want the messages that matter, and they want an affordable service that is easy to use and works on their current phone, with their current email account.”

Results also show that consumers are extremely cost-conscious, with 71 percent of respondents ranking “low cost” as a very important feature of a mobile email service, followed by “ease-of-use” at 63 percent, and “no need to upgrade devices” at 53 percent. Additionally, 96 percent of consumers are not willing to buy an expensive cell phone just to get mobile email.

“There is a big opportunity for wireless carriers to drive data revenue with the consumer mobile email market, which is largely untapped,” said Serbinis. “However, the key to success will be to listen to what consumers are saying and not just retro-fit enterprise-focused services. Consumer market segments, such as 18-24 year olds or mobile phone users over 35 who have high income but are not tech savvy, have different needs than business executive users. Carriers who offer a simple, affordable mobile email service that allows consumers to use their current phone and choose the messages that matter will reap the biggest rewards.”

Other interesting findings:

  • Spouses Matter Most: 69 percent ranked emails from a spouse or significant other as priority emails they would like pushed to their mobile phone.
  • Ex’s Matter More than the Boss: 67 percent do not want emails from their boss sent to their mobile phone – they would rather hear from an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend.
  • It’s Got To Be Easy: Despite having a college degree, 63 percent of these respondents said “ease-of-use” was very important for a mobile email service.
  • Wives Matter More Than Husbands: 8 percent more males than females ranked emails from their spouse or significant other as most important; yet more than 10 percent of males don’t want to get these emails during personal time.
  • Existing Mobile Email Services Don’t Matter: Less than half (49 percent) of respondents were aware of whether or not their existing mobile phone had email capabilities.
  • Lifestyle Matters: 32 percent of 18-34 year olds said email on their cell phone would make their lives easier, compared to 12 percent of respondents over 55.

*Figure based on number of U.S. adults as of June 2005 (220.3 million) – United States Census
