Sprint Launches the First Instant, Over the Air Music Download Service in the U.S.

Customers can instantly purchase and download full songs over-the-air right to their phone when and where they want via the high-speed Sprint Power Vision(SM) Network

Sprint (NYSE: S) customers will be the first wireless customers in the U.S. to download full songs over-the-air. Today Sprint announced the opening of the Sprint Music Store(SM) powered by Groove Mobile, the first music store in the U.S. that lets wireless customers browse, preview, download, play and manage high-quality digital music, right from their phone. Sprint customers can now take their music with them on the go and have instant access to purchase and download music when they want to, not just when they are in front of a PC.

Sprint Music Store customers can browse, preview and purchase hundreds of thousands of songs from virtually every genre of music from EMI Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group. For $2.50 a song, customers get two copies of the song: one high-quality version formatted to play and enjoy only on their phone and another high-quality version formatted to download on to their PC. Customers can also burn their music to a CD using Windows Media Player.

“Sprint is the first carrier in the United States to deliver what customers want most in a wireless music store – the instant gratification of downloading and owning their own personal collection of high-quality songs on a device that is always with them,” said Len Lauer, chief operating officer for Sprint Nextel. “Sprint is delivering on-the-go entertainment through a music storefront that is customer-friendly and easy-to-use. With a single click, customers can access the Sprint Music Store and more than 250,000 songs from all four major music labels. And because their phone is always with them, now so is the music they want.”

The Sprint Music Store operates on the high-speed Sprint Power Vision(SM) Network and is now available on two new multimedia phones, including the Sprint Power Vision Phone MM-9000 by SANYO and the Sprint Power Vision Phone MM-A940 by Samsung, also announced today. When on the Sprint Power Vision Network, customers can download a full-length song in as little as 30 seconds.

The Sprint Music Store includes both a Store and Player. The Store allows customers to browse, preview and buy digital music. The Player allows customers to view their music by genre and by artist, as well as play and manage their music using playlists. It also allows customers to bring music from their PC over to their phone. Sprint Power Vision phones come packaged with a high-quality stereo headset that enables customers to enjoy music privately. Or, if they prefer, they can play their music on the built-in speakerphone without the stereo headset.

Sprint Power Vision phones come packaged with a removable memory card that is inserted in the phone to buy, download and play full songs from the Sprint Music Store. Using an optional 1GB removable memory card, customers have the ability to store up to 1000 songs purchased from the Sprint Music Store.

“We expect that Sprint will introduce many customers to their first experience with downloading digital music on a Sprint Power Vision Phone, similar to how many customers first used a digital camera via their Sprint Phone just a few years ago!” said Lauer.

Although customers do not need a data plan to purchase music using the Sprint Music Store, Sprint recommends one of several Sprint Power Vision Packs, priced at $15, $20 and $25 – all of which include a streaming radio channel from SIRIUS, streaming live news from ABC News Now, and unlimited Web and data access. For more information on pricing plans, phones, features and services, please refer to the Sprint Power Vision press kit at www.sprint.com/mr.

The Sprint Power Vision Network is currently available to approximately 130 million people nationwide and is expected to reach over 150 million people by early 2006. Using the included 16MB removable miniSD card or an optional (128MB/256MB/512MB/1GB) miniSD card, customers can also transfer unprotected MP3/AAC/AAC+ files from a PC for playback within the Sprint Music Store. Cingular Responds to Consumer Demand by Bringing New Mobile Messaging Services to the Masses

With Cingular’s Mobile Email and Mobile IM Services, Customers Can Now Easily Access All Major Email and IM Communities

Cingular Wireless, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, today announced the availability of two enhanced services: Mobile Email and Mobile IM. Now, for the first time in the US market, Cingular customers can gain access to their existing email or IM accounts from AOL, MSN and Yahoo! through a set of simple, easy to use applications which can be accessed through a standard mass market phone. Both the Mobile Email and Mobile IM applications are available for free on a download basis through the Cingular MEdia Mall to Cingular customers who have a compatible phone. These new applications will give Cingular customers easy-to-use, pre- configured access to their email and IM accounts without the need to be tethered to their desktop or having to purchase a high-end, PDA-like device.

“Email and Instant Messaging are the ‘killer apps’ of the Internet,” said Jim Ryan, vice president of consumer data services, Cingular Wireless. “Now, with the new Mobile Email and Mobile IM applications from Cingular, we are enabling over 10 million of our existing customers with the ability to get to their existing email and IM services through a set of easy-to-use clients — anytime, anywhere, from their existing phones. These are truly mass market solutions.”

Mobile Email
Cingular’s Mobile Email service is breaking new ground by bringing the top email communities together in one application on mass market devices. Cingular customers can now view and interact with their existing personal email accounts on AOL(R) and AIM(R) Mail services, as well as MSN Hotmail, Yahoo!(R) Mail and SBC Yahoo!(R) Mail. Using a downloadable email client powered by OZ and following a simple two-step initial login process, Cingular customers can enjoy an intuitive, graphically rich, email experience with a PC look-and-feel directly from their Cingular phone. Additionally, Cingular is making email access affordable by making Mobile Email available on mass market devices. Currently, Mobile Email is available for many of the most popular Motorola devices-the V180, V220, V400, V551 and RAZR V3. More compatible handsets will be added soon.

Mobile IM features a tabbed interface with one-click switching between all three IM communities. Developed with Comverse and Thumbspeed, Cingular’s enhanced downloadable Mobile IM service delivers a full-color, graphical interface that allows customers to send and receive instant messages, as well as check the availability of friends and family online.

Cingular is launching its Mobile IM service with a special promotion that will award a $10,000 grand prize to one lucky winner. Customers can enter the “IM Download & Win Promotion” simply by downloading the instant messenger application from the MEdia Net menu on compatible handsets. Upon completion of download, they will receive one entry into the promotion. Every instant message they send or receive during the promotion using their Cingular phone will give them another entry into the sweepstakes. The promotion, which began Oct. 17, will run though December 31, 2005.

The Mobile IM service is currently available for a wide range of popular Nokia (6230, 6620), Motorola (V180, V220, V400, V551, RAZR V3) and Sony Ericsson (Z500 and S710a) handsets.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes Develops qVGA Display for Mobile Applications using Clairvoyante’s PenTile RGBW(tm) Technology

2.0-inch Display Utilizes New SW1605 PenTile RGBW Driver Chip from Silicon WorksChunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. has produced a high-brightness, low-power 2.0-inch qVGA display utilizing patent-pending PenTile RGBW(tm) technology developed by Clairvoyante. The amorphous silicon display - which uses half the power of RGB Stripe legacy designs - is driven by the new SW1605 PenTile inclusive driver chip from Clairvoyante licensee Silicon Works of Daejon, Korea.

The new display panel is being demonstrated in booth 781 through Friday, October 21st at FPD International in Yokohama, Japan.

Silicon Works’ driver chip has the same interface as standard RGB Stripe smart driver ICs, but only requires two-thirds of the memory, and the single-chip design saves further board space. By incorporating PenTile RGBW technology, one-third fewer data drivers are required; cutting the number of interconnects and frame buffer size by one-third.

PenTile Matrix(tm) technology takes advantage of the processing characteristics of the human vision system to produce cost-effective displays that consume less power and offer higher brightness at high visual resolution. PenTile RGBW technology adds a white subpixel to the conventional RGB subpixels in order to enhance luminance and color reproduction. In addition, the benefits of PenTile-based LCDs can be realized without costly plant or process modifications.

“The display market continues to demand high-brightness, low-power panels, and we’re pleased that another industry leader such as Chunghwa Picture Tubes chooses to enable this using PenTile RGBW technology,” said Joel Pollack, Clairvoyante president and chief executive officer. “The Silicon Works driver IC allows CPT to release a superior performing product while continuing to validate PenTile RGBW technology for brightness improvement and power reduction.”

About Clairvoyante
Clairvoyante, Inc. develops and licenses unique pixel architectures and algorithms to the flat-panel display industry under the PenTile Matrix(tm) brand family. The company’s proprietary subpixel rendering technology optimizes the performance of next-generation LCD displays in terms of brightness, resolution and power consumption. Founded in July 2000, Clairvoyante maintains offices in Sebastopol and Cupertino, California. The company’s investors include American River Ventures, Intel Capital, Pacifica Fund, Rocket Ventures, Selby Venture Partners, The Angels’ Forum and Yasuda Capital. -Mobile Launches ‘Internet 4G’ Service Powered by TD-CDMA from IPWireless

Launch Features Demonstration of Streaming TV, Video Conferencing, Enterprise Web Collaboration Tools, Streaming Music, Online Gaming and Very High Speed Internet

T-Mobile launched commercial services of “Internet 4G” today, a super fast, next-generation wireless service that will allow subscribers to access the Internet, watch streaming video, download music, and transfer large files at broadband speeds with unprecedented ease. Powered by UMTS TD-CDMA technology from IPWireless, T-Mobile’s Internet 4G service is fast enough to allow subscribers to replace their fixed line services, but is also mobile, allowing them to enjoy rich multimedia experiences wherever they are in the service area.

During the launch events for the new service over the coming week, T-Mobile will show the capabilities of Internet 4G to highlight the enhanced wireless experience that customers will enjoy. Video of the country’s top- rated television show will be streamed smoothly for a broadcast-like viewing experience. Music will be downloaded from T-Music, T-Mobile’s online music service. Enterprise collaboration tools that allow coworkers to hold videoconferences, share presentations, and hold online whiteboard sessions wherever they are will be demonstrated. T-Mobile will also demonstrate the “speed and latency difference” of Internet 4G over other wireless networks for web browsing, email, and online gaming.

“Internet 4G gives our subscribers full connectivity to work and play on the go, and provides a connection that’s fast enough to replace the home fixed connection,” said Roland Mahler, managing director, T-Mobile CZ. “With Internet 4G, we are confident that T-Mobile will strengthen its position as the No. 1 communications provider in the Czech Republic.”

Services are available initially in Prague, expanding to other area of the country rapidly. Service plans start at 699 koruna (US$29) + VAT 19% for unlimited use at 512 Kbps and 999 koruna (US$41) + VAT 19% for 1 Mbps (speeds are not guaranteed). Subscribers will be able to use either the very small external modem or a PCMCIA card for laptop use, both of which can be set up by the subscriber in minutes.

T-Mobile’s Internet 4G service is powered by UMTS TD-CDMA, the 3GPP standard broadband wireless technology designed for mobile operators. The T-Mobile network will utilize the 1900MHz spectrum that is specifically allocated for the technology and owned by GSM operators across Europe and parts of Asia. An ideal technology for mass market mobile broadband networks, the technology’s very high downlink and uplink performance, low latency, high average sector capacity, strong cell edge performance, low cost per megabit, and support for a high number of simultaneous users, allows mobile operators to offer a range of differentiated mobile broadband services to both enterprise and consumer markets, and to maximize revenue on their networks.
