Nokia announces launch date of intergalactic alien adventure “Space Alliance”

Massively multiplayer sci-fi action game to hit Java phones in Q1 2006 through the Nokia SNAP Mobile service

Nokia, the leader in mobile communications, announced that in the first quarter of next year, hundreds of thousands of players can expect to be able to connect through “Space Alliance,” a massively multi-player online game (MMOG) available on selected Java technology-enabled mobile phones through the Nokia SNAP Mobile service. Announced earlier this year at E3 as “Space Shooter,” “Space Alliance” tasks humans with defending themselves from a massively coordinated alien attack. Gamers can go at it alone or build an online team of fellow pilots to destroy these vile creatures and save the human race.

“To really play upon the community aspect that accompanies all Nokia SNAP Mobile titles, we decided to pit gamers against the bad guys in ‘Space Alliance,’ rather than against each other,” said Lisa Waits, head of Nokia SNAP Mobile. “By giving gamers the opportunity to form alliances, we’re giving new meaning to the type of comraderie possible in massively multi-player arenas.”

“Space Alliance,” developed by Monkey Business, is a 3D space shooter game where players take part in a massively co-operative persistent online intergalactic war. Players work together to annihilate alien forces, construct new starbases and fighter factories, build automated defenses, and respond to other players’ distress signals. A live moderator provides mid- to long-term strategy for the alien fleets, and can add new elements to a game in play to keep the players busy or to assist them. The moderator also maintains an online “blog” that includes information on the history of the galaxy, and what has taken place prior to the alien attack. Like other titles developed for Nokia SNAP Mobile, “Space Alliance” offers friends list and chat, but also includes score reporting, leader boards and community news boards.

“The game is action packed enough to be played solo, but working as a team offers gamers the sense they are contributing to the greater good,” said Burt Sloane, ‘Top Banana’ at Monkey Business. “Think about it - we all love to cheer for the home team - so what better way to evoke that same emotion in a mobile game than to offer players the chance to join forces? If collaboration isn’t the best definition of community gameplay, I’m not sure what is.”

All of the online Java games created for the Nokia SNAP Mobile platform are supported by both Nokia and non-Nokia phones. Space Alliance is expected to be available in Q1 2006. Motorola Launches First Pocket PDA for TETRA

Delivers Robust PDA for Public Safety Users

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today launched the first-ever personal digital assistant (PDA) to operate on TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) networks. The new, robust PDA delivers public safety users pocket-sized access to essential two-way data applications whilst on the move. The PDA offers the same value of Motorola’s TETRA hand-portable radios: Always On, Trusted, Reliable and Secure.

The PDA has been developed to meet the rugged requirements of public safety organisations that need secure access to real-time information on the move. Users can access person and vehicle records, report crimes and accidents, and issue penalty tickets via the PDA’s application suite. This functionality meets public safety users’ targets to spend more time on visible, active patrol and increase daily productivity.

Options available include Bluetooth, WLAN, GPS and camera, allowing pictures to be circulated quickly from the PDA. The pocket-sized device measures 145mm (L) x 83mm (W) x 35-50mm (H) and weighs less than 500 grams. With its large 3.5″ TFT screen, it provides the ideal form factor for users to work with the information.

Using the TETRA network to deliver data to the PDA gives emergency services access to a controllable data pipeline that remains continuously available, even during a major incident, and at a competitive cost.

Nick Carter, Product Manager, Motorola TETRA subscribers, comments: “Motorola developed this PDA to reflect the growing needs of customers who want to deliver relevant applications directly to mobile officers. With the launch of this product we are demonstrating TETRA as the appropriate, reliable and secure bearer for public safety users of data. The pocketable, TETRA PDA and the applications suite it can provide will really help meet their productivity needs.”

With the same levels of security as Motorola’s TETRA radios, the PDA supports authentication and encryption. Motorola plans to make the device commercially available by Q3 2006.

Bluetooth Shipments Double in Four Months

With worldwide demand for Bluetooth products soaring, the Bluetooth SIG puts the spotlight on user experience by announcing four new programs

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced that the Bluetooth market has passed the impressive milestone of 9.5 million Bluetooth units shipping per week. In May, the shipment figures were 4.75 million per week according to IMS Research and in September - only four months later - this figure has doubled, exceeding even the most optimistic analyst projections. Serving as an advocate to the industry as well as the consumer, the Bluetooth SIG has designed a number of consumer programs in order to satisfy the needs of the booming market and further secure a first-class user experience of Bluetooth wireless technology.

“By doubling the Bluetooth shipments in just four months, Bluetooth technology has once again proved itself as the wireless technology for the personal area network,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “As the market is thriving, the Bluetooth SIG listens to the needs of the market, while aiming to improve the positive user experience. Our new consumer programs encourage similar implementations for different product categories and enhance the users’ understanding of expected performance.”

The intent of the new consumer programs is to recognize, manage and encourage people’s expectations of their Bluetooth experience. All four programs are directed at the various ways consumers gather information and make buying decisions for Bluetooth enabled products.

Experience icons is a ubiquitous cross-industry communications tool for product manufacturers to communicate Bluetooth capabilities in products, achieving more informed purchase decisions by consumers and thus managing expectations. With the use of the experience icons in conjunction with the Bluetooth trademark, consumers can easily identify the capability of Bluetooth enabled products.

www.bluetooth.com is the official website where the industry and consumers alike can gather all relevant information about Bluetooth wireless technology. By early next year, the Bluetooth SIG launches a website aimed at facilitating education, and providing improved navigation, structure, search and unique tools that will help consumers understand the Bluetooth capabilities of various products.

User Terminology is a document with common user terminology recommended for manufacturing companies to use. The need for such a document has sprung out of the thousands of products produced by various manufacturers and the need to assure common terms and interfaces being used between manufacturers on a worldwide basis. The user terminology document is translated into 34 different languages and is intended to be used in consumer audience materials by Bluetooth members.

Best of Breed is a set of guidelines laid out for two types of Bluetooth implementations in different product categories: Basic and Best of Breed. In mobile phones, for instance, the Bluetooth SIG will publish the profiles recommended for the most comprehensive user experience in a Basic and a Best of Breed Mobile Phone. Products meeting the Best of Breed implementation will be featured in various areas of the redesigned www.bluetooth.com .

“Hockey fans rejoice because not only has the season begun, but this new wireless game is the best way to enjoy hockey on your mobile phone.” - WGWorld.com

THQ Wireless Inc., a subsidiary of THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI), announced today that the company has teamed up again this season with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) to launch NHL 5-on-5 2006, the most fast paced and cutting edge hockey game to launch to date on mobile phones. Now available on major carriers to coincide with the start of the NHL season, NHL 5-on-5 2006 allows mobile gamers to lace up as one of 300 NHL players, in addition to participating in full season play, managing their own team and downloading roster updates.

“With all of the anticipation surrounding this year’s NHL season, we have again aligned ourselves with the NHL and the NHLPA to create a mobile experience that will not only appeal to die hard hockey fans, but gamers who thrive on the hard-hitting action found only in top sports titles,” said Tim Walsh, President of THQ Wireless. “With new features, advanced graphics and simplified controls, we feel strongly that NHL 5-on-5 2006 is one of the top mobile sports games that has launched to date.”

“We are proud to work with a publisher like THQ Wireless to produce and distribute a mobile game that truly reflects the action, pace and excitement of the NHL season,” stated Keith Ritter, President of NHL Interactive Cyber Enterprises (NHL ICE).

Boasting more robust art and vivid animation, as well as incredible gameplay improvements, NHL 5-on-5 2006 features all 30 NHL teams with strengths and weaknesses mirroring their real-life counterparts. Reminiscent of console classics, NHL 5-on-5 2006 offers full season mode, including the playoffs as well as the Stanley Cup Finals, and the mobile game also allows players to download updated lineups reflecting information on player movement and team improvements.

In addition, THQ Wireless has added several features to enhance the game’s authenticity. Line changes and coaching strategies allow players to show off their skills behind the bench, while the addition of one-timers, tip-ins, and redirections let users display their ability on the ice. Varying powered shots let you fire a ferocious slap shot into the back of the net or trickle the puck between the goalie’s legs. The new and improved mobile game also allows players to feel every check thrown during gameplay, through a vibration feature available on many handsets.

MobileSphere Launches Industry’s First International Long Distance Solution for MVNOs and Wireless Carriers

MobileSphere’s Market-Proven CarrierILDâ„¢ Solution Developed and Implemented with Leading MVNOs

MobileSphere, a leading provider of global wireless communications solutions, today announced the widespread availability of CarrierILDâ„¢, the company’s innovative international long distance (ILD) solution for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and wireless carriers. Utilizing MobileSphere’s patent-pending softswitch technology and global Tier 1 network, U.S. and international MVNOs and wireless carriers can now offer fully integrated international calling services to their subscribers.

“MVNOs and wireless carriers are grappling with how to provision international calling capabilities at competitive rates,” said Gavin Macomber, executive vice president of marketing for MobileSphere. “CarrierILDâ„¢ addresses the two significant issues facing wireless carriers today - price and fraud control. We are pleased to announce the availability of our carrier-class solution, the industry’s first plug-and-play ILD offer for MVNOs and wireless carriers.”

Leveraging its experience in providing wireless international calling solutions to service providers, large enterprises, universities, international partners and consumers since 2001, MobileSphere has worked intimately with several leading MVNOs to develop and implement CarrierILDâ„¢. A comprehensive service offering specifically tailored to meet the needs of MVNO and wireless carrier customers, MobileSphere’s CarrierILDâ„¢ solution includes the following:

  • Discounted international termination to 220+ countries
  • Turnkey, market-proven provisioning, billing and reporting platform
  • Real-time anti-fraud control and usage monitoring
  • Fully-integrated web and retail-based enrollment and replenishment options
  • Flexible rate and billing alternatives
  • Seamless dialing (direct-dial solutions available)

“Consumers are increasingly utilizing mobile phones as their primary connection, foregoing land lines in greater numbers,” says Jack Gold, President of J.Gold Associates, an independent wireless analyst firm. “Many consumers are turning to MVNOs as their mobile choice for the particular features and/or functionality they offer. Since consumers want full featured capabilities, international long distance is a pre-requisite for an increasing number of mobile customers, as the world shrinks and costs for international long distance decline. Services such as MobileSphere’s will become a key competitive differentiator for MVNOs and wireless carriers seeking upscale customers and increased revenues.”

Since MVNOs are mobile operators that do not own their own spectrum or network infrastructure, they purchase airtime from traditional wireless carriers, such as Sprint Nextel, Cingular and Verizon Wireless, for resale to their own customers. However, mobile virtual network operators are largely restricted or discouraged from reselling international calling services provided by traditional wireless carriers, primarily due to fraud and bad debt concerns. MobileSphere’s solution addresses these concerns, while increasing subscriber loyalty and revenue.

Pricing and Availability
For MVNOs and wireless carriers seeking to provide low-cost international calling as a key differentiator in the marketplace, MobileSphere’s CarrierILDâ„¢ solution is unmatched, with international rates averaging 50 to 70 percent below rates charged by major wireless carriers. For example, mobile-originated calls to Mexico can run as high as $1.49 per minute. In contrast, MobileSphere’s rate plans enable its customers to offer rates as low as $0.05 per minute to Mexico and many other frequently called countries. While some major wireless carriers offer discounted international pricing plans to frequent callers, these plans are often saddled with monthly fees and other restrictions, such as long waiting periods or deposit requirements.

MobileSphere’s CarrierILDâ„¢ solution has been successfully deployed by a number of MVNOs and wireless carriers and is now available for widespread adoption. Typical provisioning time is one to two weeks. Those interested in learning more about MobileSphere’s services can contact the company directly at sales@mobile-sphere.com or by calling +1-888-337-0317 x 102. MobileSphere will also be available to discuss its solution at next week’s 2005 MVNO Summit, December 6-7 in Miami, Fla.

About MobileSphere
With headquarters in Boston and offices in Los Angeles and Paris, MobileSphere has been a leading provider of global wireless communications solutions since 2001. Utilizing its patent-pending softswitch technology, coupled with its global Tier 1 network, MobileSphere provides its customers with innovative, highly-competitive, market-proven solutions. Serving customers worldwide with its CarrierILDâ„¢ solution, the company uniquely focuses on the international long distance needs of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), wireless carriers, medium-to-large enterprises, universities and consumers. MobileSphere is a member of the Rural Cellular Association (RCA) and the Association for Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education (ACUTA). Coupled with Verizon Wireless’ new BroadbandAccess Connect pricing, the BlackBerry 7130e delivers all the popular e-mail and data capabilities available with the BlackBerry wireless platform and can also serve as a modem for customers who want to use the device to connect their laptop with Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service.

With BroadbandAccess Connect, customers can use their BlackBerry 7130e as a modem for downloading large documents to a laptop at speeds averaging 400 to 700 kbps on Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service that covers more than 140 million Americans in 171 major metropolitan markets. BroadbandAccess Connect is available for $15 with any Verizon Wireless BlackBerry voice and unlimited data plan beginning at $79.99; or $30 with the purchase of a BlackBerry data-only plan for $49.99.

Think Outside Announces Blackberry Support; New Portable Keyboard for Enterprise CRM Users Addresses “Blackberry Thumb”

Think Outside Inc., creator of the award-winning Stowaway Portable Keyboards for handheld devices, today announced the availability of the Stowaway Shasta, a portable keyboard designed specifically for Blackberry users.

“The Stowaway Shasta is our newest keyboard, developed specifically for Blackberry devices with integrated Bluetooth technology,” said Greg van den Dries, CEO and president of Think Outside. “Until now, Blackberry users could only compose messages using the integrated thumb keypad which may lead to “Blackberry Thumb”, a repetitive motion injury that was recently documented by researchers at Cornel University. Those small keyboards are great for quick messages, but present a problem for heavy text users. With the Shasta, users can comfortably compose messages and take notes using a normal size keyboard.”

The new Stowaway Shasta Bluetooth Keyboard and driver offer several unique and revolutionary features, including:

  • Full size foldable keyboard - Shasta uses key switch technology that is on par with the best notebook keyboards. It folds into a compact size that is 5.7 x 3.87 x .055 inches and is available in an English QWERTY layout with a 5th row of number keys.
  • Over-the-Air Driver installation – Blackberry users can surf to Think Outside’s web site, which will automatically download the latest driver thus removing the need to sync with a PC.
  • Hot keys – Shasta has a dedicated key layout for Blackberry users. Users can use hot keys to launch the most common Blackberry applications.
  • Bluetooth – Shasta uses Bluetooth technology that removes the need for cumbersome wires.

“Salesforce.com is the world leader in On-Demand CRM applications and our wireless edition links our applications with Blackberry users. The Stowaway Shasta will offer mobile professionals the ability to take better advantage of our CRM solutions while on the go,” said Bobby Napiltonia, senior vice president of channels and alliances at Salesforce.com. “I plan on using my Blackberry and the new Stowaway Shasta to help me stay in communication with my office and my customers.”

The Stowaway Shasta supports a wide variety of Bluetooth-enabled devices from RIM, including the 7100, 7500 and 7200 series, and will be available from leading retailers in November 2005.

Award-Winning Nokia N90 Now Shipping in the U.S.

Part of the Nokia Nseries Multimedia Range, Nokia N90 Combines the Best of Photography, Video and Communications

Nokia today announced sales start of the Nokia N90 in the U.S. The first mobile device to feature Carl Zeiss optics and a range of advanced camera functions in addition to superb quality video, the Nokia N90 is set to transform the mobile photography market.

The industry-acclaimed Nokia N90 will be available in November at select Ritz Camera stores and online at ritzcamera.com for an estimated retail price of $399 with activation. The Nokia N90 will also be available in December at CompUSA retail locations, and through the Neiman Marcus holiday catalog.

“Response to the N90 has been overwhelming,” said David Watkins, Director, Imaging Business for Nokia North America. “Photographers, filmmakers and people around the globe have created remarkable results with the device, while enjoying all the benefits of staying connected to work and to life.”

The Nokia N90 was named American Photo’s Editor’s Choice for “Breakthrough” product this year and recently received a “Best of What’s New” 2005 award from Popular Science magazine. The European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), the largest editorial multimedia organization in Europe, voted the N90 “European Media Phone of the Year 2005-6″.

In October, Nokia and five of the world’s best photographers announced the ‘See New’ competition — the most ambitious mobile photography competition ever undertaken. To inspire people to enter, a stellar line-up of professional photographers have themselves been shooting using the Nokia N90, producing more than 60 brand new images. These images and competition details can be viewed at http://www.seenew.com/ . The deadline for entries is February 28th, 2006.

The Nokia N90 is packed with advanced digital camera features to capture print quality photos, including a two megapixel camera with autofocus, integrated LED flash, macro mode for sharp close-ups and on-device photo editing capabilities. The Nokia N90 also features VHS resolution video recording in MP4 format and comes with dedicated record and zoom keys for easy video capture.

The Nokia XpressPrint solution provides Nokia N90 users with a variety of printing options. When printing via PictBridge, for example, the handset is connected directly to a compatible printer with a USB cable. The Nokia XpressPrint solution allows for wireless printing over Bluetooth wireless technology, and furthermore, the MultiMediaCard (RS-MMC) can be extracted from the side of the phone and inserted into a compatible printer.

Photos and video clips taken with the Nokia N90 can conveniently be stored on the PC using the Nokia PC Suite Image Store, which, when connected, automatically saves images and video clips to the PC.

A full list of features for the Nokia N90 is available at http://www.nokia.com/N90

New Motorola V557 from Cingular Delivers Zero-Click Access to Information, Entertainment and Communications

Giving consumers a new way to connect, access information or enjoy in-demand multimedia, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), a global leader in wireless communications, announced the availability of the Motorola V557. The new flip phone is on shelves now at Cingular Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S.

The Motorola V557 is the first handset to include Motorola’s SCREEN3(1) - an innovative technology that pushes information out to the phone idle screen in a “ticker tape” that runs along the bottom of the screen. This technology enables consumers to get news, sports, entertainment, and other premium content and services directly from their mobile device home screen (no buttons to push, no browsers to launch). Cingular is the first operator to offer SCREEN3 through the company’s Media Net Live Ticker service(1) available now on Motorola V557 for the holidays.

In addition to offering “zero-click” access to the wireless web, the Motorola V557 features a VGA camera, video record and playback, and advanced messaging(1). EDGE (Enhanced Data Global Evolution) technology(1) and Cingular’s consumer data services(1), such as Picture Messaging and Cingular Sounds, enhance the multimedia offerings and enable subscribers to share images and download MP3 ringtones with unprecedented speed.

“The Motorola V557 gives consumers a new way to enjoy continuous access to news, sports, entertainment and more — functioning as the ideal mobile phone for anyone looking to stay connected to their world,” said Bob Suastegui, vice president in the Mobile Devices Group at Motorola. “Whether sharing picture messages, catching up on world events or downloading new games, this compact flip phone delivers a complete multimedia experience.”

The Motorola V557 features chrome details and a soft-touch finish. With Bluetooth(R) wireless technology, Instant Messaging (IM)(1) and email(1), users can stay connected the way that suits them best.

Pricing and Availability
The Motorola V557 is available at Cingular Wireless retail stores, in select markets throughout the U.S., for as low as $99.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a $50 mail-in rebate. For more information, visit http://www.cingular.com/ or http://www.motorola.com/.

Introducing The Latest ‘Catch’ From Cingular: The Firefly Phone

In time for holidays, Cingular offers Cool, Fun Mobile Phone for Tweens that Helps Keep Parents in Control of Calls

Cingular Wireless and Firefly Mobile, Inc. today announced the availability of the Firefly phone, a pioneering mobile phone designed specifically for kids ages 12 and under. Cingular is the first national U.S. carrier to launch this unique voice-only phone. Firefly Mobile also announced this week that the Firefly phone was awarded the prestigious 2006 ‘Best of Innovations’ Award in the telephone category from the Consumer Electronics Association (CES).

The Firefly phone was designed with just five keys instead of a regular dial pad. Parents use a private PIN to program up to 22 outgoing numbers into the phone, including speed-dial keys for Mom and Dad. Kids place calls by pressing the Mom or Dad key, or selecting a name in the Phone Book and pressing “send.” Caller ID lets your child know who’s calling. An optional call screening feature can be activated, allowing the phone to accept incoming calls from only those numbers programmed into the phone.

“From ballet class to soccer practice to piano lessons-children are increasingly engaged in activities outside of the home and school,” said David Garver, executive director, segment marketing and sponsorships, Cingular Wireless. “We’re excited to offer a device that is designed with parents and, especially, their kids in mind. With the Firefly phone, parents can easily control their kids’ calling activity, while kids can enjoy the cool look and feel of the device and stay connected to friends and parents while on the go.”

“Parents asked us for a variety of calling plans for their Firefly phones and we are delighted that Cingular, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, is bringing the Firefly phone and a choice of plans to its customers,” said Fred Bullock, CMO, Firefly Mobile. “Cingular, like Firefly Mobile, recognizes that parents are searching for a mobile phone explicitly designed for kids ages 12 and under that suits an individual’s parenting style and is fun for kids to use.”

Kids Make The Firefly Phone Their Own
Weighing only two ounces, the Firefly phone - The Mobile Phone for Mobile Kids(TM) - is designed to fit comfortably in a child’s hand. The Firefly phone lights up like a firefly when the phone rings, and intermittently when it is in use, when charging and when in standby mode. Kids can personalize their Firefly phone whenever they wish by selecting ringtones, animations, and backlight colors that come preloaded on the phone.

Cingular and Firefly Mobile offer an array of accessories for the Firefly phone, which enable kids to add a little more personalization to their phone to fit their taste. Accessories available at Cingular retail outlets include a “fashion kit” with a “bubblegum” colored collectible shell and wristlet purse, and an “action kit” with a “slime” colored collectible shell and pouch.

Pricing and Availability
The Firefly phone and accessories are available now through participating Cingular retail locations or via www.cingular.com. The Firefly is $49.99, after a $25 mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract. The Firefly phone is available on Cingular’s $9.99 FamilyTalk(R) plan.
