Sony Ericsson extends Walkman family to four with first UMTS music phone - the W900i

Sony Ericsson has added its first UMTS handset to the Walkman range of music phones bringing the total number of phones in the range to four. The W900i is a high quality fully specified music player, phone and imaging device capable of super-fast downloads of all types of multimedia – music, video and graphics. It follows the highly successful global market launch of the W800i. As the W600i and the W550i are now available in the Americas and the rest of the world, there are now Walkman phones meeting a broad spectrum of mobile music needs and price segments.

As a music player, the W900i makes it easy to import, transfer, manage and play music from operators’ over-the-air (OTA) music download services, allowing tracks to be downloaded directly to the phone while on the move and, from a PC when tracks have been copied from the owner’s CD collection.

“The W900i, along with the rest of the Walkman phone family, will establish a new lifestyle habit of enjoying superb quality music and video and a full internet web experience on the move from a single mobile device,” says Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President, Product and Application Planning of Sony Ericsson. “In our first UMTS Walkman phone we have combined fast download speeds with superb sound quality and crystal clear 30 frames per second video recording and play-back in a really simple and easy to use device. The W900i will not only appeal as a music phone. The superb communications, multimedia and imaging functionality will appeal to all those wanting a true multimedia capable device.”

Music transfer and download
One of the most enticing features of the W900i is how easy it will be to import, transfer, play and manage music files. Tracks can be imported from a variety of sources, either over-the-air direct to the phone if it supports an available operator music download service, or via a PC.

Transferring digital music files from a PC to the phone is a simple ‘drag and drop’ and the W900i is also fully compatible with user-copied content from all leading music management software packages. This is particularly useful for consumers already owning another type of digital music player who want to transfer tracks that originate from their CD collection on to the W900i.

The supplied Disc2Phone PC software allows the user to easily transfer music to the phone from audio CDs and a PC music collection. Disc2Phone can transfer music based on playlists and has a fun and easy-to-use shuffle functionality. The W900i’s large internal 470MB user free memory provides space for between 120 and 240 songs. The storage capacity is easily increased however by inserting a Memory Stick PRO Duo, currently available in retail outlets at up to 2GB, giving space for up to 1,000 tracks. Music files can be stored in all the key formats: MP3, AAC or AAC+, MIDI, WAV and XMF.

Functionality and design
The versatile swivel design makes it easy to multitask between the W900i’s many functions, a feature which gives the phone an advantage over dedicated music players. The direct music buttons get the user swiftly into the Walkman player where it is possible to scroll through play lists, artists or individual songs. Users fed up with missing calls because they are listening to music will love the fact that the phone’s ringtone cuts into the audio and pauses the track while the user takes the call.

The phone swivels open automatically with the lightest of touches, revealing a large keypad. Virtually all functions can be performed with the phone closed, and users can read messages or search through their music library without opening the phone.

Imaging and multimedia
More than a fully featured music player, the W900i is a highly advanced imaging and multimedia device with broadband-fast download speeds, smooth, responsive browse capabilities and a large, 2.2 inch QVGA 262K TFT screen, one of the brightest ever seen on a mobile phone.

The 2.0-Megapixel, autofocus camera with LED flash- or picture-light is perfect for capturing priceless moments and, thanks to the Sony Ericsson dual fronted design, is operated with both hands in a horizontal position for maximum stability. The camera also shoots video at up to 30fps (frames per second), double the speed of most conventional imaging phones and the playback quality threshold for television.

With the supplied Adobe PC software, pictures and videos can be easily imported to a PC as soon as the phone is connected using the fast USB connection. They can then be edited, printed and shared using the easy-to-use and powerful Adobe software, and videos can be played back using Apple QuickTime Player.

As an entertainment device the W900i exploits the UMTS-delivered capabilities to the full, delivering fast and smooth download and browsing of video, games, sound and graphics. The high performance 3D Java gaming engine is put to the test with the embedded Asphalt Urban GT 3D from Gameloft, where users can experience the thrills of extreme racing at the wheel of the ultimate sports cars.

Accessories
The W900i is the first Sony Ericsson phone to be supplied with a Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-80 with remote control that allows the user to operate the Walkman player without removing it from their pocket. A USB cable and Disc2Phone PC software for transfer and management of music files are also included in the box.

W900i Availability

Tekkeon Launches Advanced Bluetooth Headset with Organic LED

ezTalker digital Advanced Bluetooth Headset with Optimized Display Minimizes Need for Direct Access to Mobile Phone

Tekkeon, a provider of innovative accessories for mobile electronic products, today announces ezTalkerâ„¢ digital, its next-generation Bluetooth v1.2 headset with an optimized organic LED (OLED) screen that significantly simplifies making and receiving calls. With the presentation of incoming caller ID and quick access to many advanced features, ezTalkerâ„¢ digital minimizes the need for direct interaction with the mobile phone.

Tekkeon optimized ezTalker digital with an OLED that allows for a bright, easy-to-read display which is brighter and uses less power than a traditional LED. This 64×48 pixel OLED provides the incoming caller’s number and the list of stored numbers in a call list for easy redial. The call list contains the last 15 received numbers, which are automatically stored on the headset, and can be quickly browsed and dialed. Information about the headset, including headset status, connection status, battery level, and volume level, is available at a glance on the display.

“ezTalker digital has been designed to enable users to virtually cut the ties with the mobile phone,” says Jerry Yang, president of Tekkeon. “By taking advantage of incoming caller ID, a stored call list, and a long list of advanced features, users can answer and make calls directly from the headset, without having to juggle the headset and the mobile phone.”

ezTalker digital is equipped with a rechargeable lithium polymer battery that provides up to five hours of talk time and 120 hours of standby time while maximizing the quality of communication through the headset. (When used with mobile phones that support an HV3 connection, ezTalker digital provides up to eight hours of talk time.) The battery is conveniently housed in the headset earhook so that it can be replaced with a spare to provide even more hours of talk time. And the power adapter plugs directly into the headset earhook, eliminating the need to carry a cradle.

ezTalker digital’s over-the-ear design puts the headset controls at the user’s fingertips. Making and receiving calls is simple with one-touch access to pairing, answer, end, reject, and transfer call, power on/off, volume control, mute, call waiting, last number redial, and voice-activated dialing. Both visual and audible indicators identify the headset mode, and provide a low battery indication.

The headset speaker sits comfortably in the ear to precisely direct sound and the microphone is positioned to direct speech, while significantly minimizing background noise.

Designed with Bluetooth v1.2 technology, ezTalker digital is backward compatible with Bluetooth v1.1 devices, and works with any device that supports Bluetooth headset and/or handsfree profiles. The headset includes a chip antenna that provides superior reception between the headset and mobile phone within the Bluetooth standard 30 foot range. That means the phone can be placed in a briefcase, pocket, or another room—virtually anywhere within that range.

Weighing in at under an ounce and measuring just over two inches in length, ezTalker digital is unobtrusive and comfortable to wear for extended periods. The versatile earhook can be adjusted to be worn on either ear.

Features
ezTalker digital supports numerous advanced features, including

  • Call transfer to/from the mobile phone
  • Call reject
  • Call waiting
  • Headset and call status information
  • Incoming caller ID
  • Last number redial
  • Voice-activated dialing

The calling features must be supported by the connected mobile phone.

Pricing and Availability
The MSRP for ezTalker digital (Tekkeon model number ET3000) is $119.95, and for the spare earhook with battery (model number ET3000-10) is $14.95. The package includes the ezTalker digital headset, power adapter, small and large soft earpieces, and the user guide. ezTalker digital, which is graphite gray, is currently available in on-line stores like Buy.com, Ebuyer.com, eCOST.com, Newegg, Shop4tech.com, and Tiger Direct, and from the Tekkeon store at www.Tekkeon.com. ezTalker digital comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Ubersexuals Tend to Smlirt with Their Puggles at Their Side

T9 Keeps Mobile Users Up-to-Date By Adding 2005 Buzz Words to Text Dictionary

Did you know that a Puggle is a new breed of dog crossed between a Pug and a Beagle? Or that Vlogs (video blogs) are the latest rage? Language is constantly evolving, with new words becoming part of our culture every day. To help Britons better communicate, these and other words have been added to a special T9 predictive text input dictionary for users to tap into when texting on their mobiles.

Some of the hottest buzz words of the year added include:

  • ASBO - anti-social behaviour order
  • Europop - pop music from continental Europe with simple melodies
  • Smlirt - flirting in the ’smokers’ area of an establishment
  • Ubersexual - a heterosexual male who is both confident and compassionate with a strong interest in good causes and principles
  • Podcast - a downloadable audio broadcast

By making the language used in everyday conversation available on phones, this special T9® dictionary gives mobile users greater freedom to express themselves via text. T9® predictive text software anticipates the word that you are going to use when you press each key just once. For example, keying ‘podcast’ requires just 7 keystrokes (7-6-3-2-2-7-8) instead of 14 when tapping out the letters individually. And ‘vlog’ can be reached in 4 steps instead of 10.

Texting is an incredibly popular form of communication. With an average of 89 million text messages sent per day in the U.K. in September[1] alone, this hot trend shows no sign of cooling down. T9 is available on a majority of phones offering speedy predictive texting, and with more than 34,000 words in the English language T9 dictionary users can tap out a text faster than ever.

“Texting is one of the most dominant modern communication methods and our goal is to keep up with the changing language trends,” said William Clement, senior marketing manger, Europe, Tegic Communications, the company behind T9 predictive text input software. “By adding these new words to the dictionary we hope to give users the ability to text in a similar way to how they would speak to one another. As new words pop up in our language, we will keep adding them to the dictionary.”

T9 predictive text software is available on over 800 mobile phone models worldwide, including many Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Siemens handsets. The latest version of T9 software (v. 7.3), as well as this special language database of buzz words, is now available for handset makers to integrate into their mobile phones. For users struggling to get to grips with predictive text entry, check out the T9® Trainer at http://www.textfast.T9.com.

About T9® Text Input Software
T9 Text Input, a leading alphabet-based and Chinese, Japanese and Korean character-based text input software, is the flagship product of Tegic Communications, and is available in more than 49 languages. By incorporating T9 Text Input into mobile communications products, companies are solving the fundamental problem of how to quickly and easily type and send SMS text messages. More than 800 mobile phone models available throughout the world today include T9 Text Input and the technology has been licensed to major consumer electronics and communications equipment manufacturers worldwide. Cingular Launches 3G Network

BroadbandConnect Service Offers Ultra-Fast Connections

Cingular Wireless today launched its super-charged wireless network capable of providing customers with high-speed access to information in a world that has gone mobile. Customers can use the third-generation (3G) network to access Cingular BroadbandConnect, which is available to nearly 35 million people in 52 communities throughout the United States. The company will continue to extend the network rapidly next year.

Stan Sigman, Cingular’s president and CEO, announced the service at an investor conference in New York City: “Make no mistake about it: Wireless users want the speed and services they’ve come to expect from their wired connections. And today Cingular is delivering on its promises to provide both the speed and reliability customers need.”

Cingular’s 3G network is the first widely available service in the world to use HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology. HSDPA is the high-speed evolution of GSM/EDGE (Global System for Mobile Communication/Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution), which shares a common core network. GSM is the world’s most popular wireless technology, which is used by more than one billion people in 210 countries.

Cingular will initially launch the BroadbandConnect service in Austin (TX.), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (OR.), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (CA.), Seattle, Tacoma (Wash.) and Washington D.C.

“We’re giving customers the ability to securely access information and applications at broadband speeds in the office, on the road or at home. With our 3G service, almost any spot in a city is a hot spot,” said Ralph de la Vega, chief operating officer for Cingular Wireless. “BroadbandConnect complements our national high-speed EDGE data service, offering customers the flexibility and ubiquity required to be more productive as the world continues to go wireless.”

Cingular BroadbandConnect is a super-charged enhancement to the company’s nationwide EDGE network, the nation’s largest wireless high-speed data network. When coupled with a compatible device and service plan, the service provides average mobile data connections between 400-700Kbps (kilobits per second) on the downlink and bursts to more than a megabit per second.

BroadbandConnect combines a laptop modem card, Cingular’s Communication Manager software and a Data Connect plan for use on laptops. Customers can use their laptops to access the Internet or e-mail, download large files and attachments, and run corporate business applications at broadband speeds in areas covered by BroadbandConnect. The service also offers additional security features compared to alternative wireless technologies. Additional devices and exclusive services that take advantage of the high-speed HSDPA network, such as transmitting full motion video and providing ultra-fast audio, will be available in 2006.

Unlike services offered by some wireless companies, BroadbandConnect does not drop a session when the user is outside the coverage area. Cingular said the laptop modem cards are dual-band HSDPA/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System) (850/1900Mhz) and backward compatible with EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) in four bands (850/900/1800/1900Mhz), so the session is seamlessly transferred to the company’s nationwide EDGE network or a data network of one of its roaming partners.

The Cingular EDGE network is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and in areas along 40,000 miles of highways, providing average data speeds between 70-135Kbps. Cingular customers can also access data services in more than 90 countries.

Customers can purchase either a Sierra Wireless AC860 or Novatel U730 laptop modem card for $99.99, after rebate, when they sign up for a qualifying voice plan and introductory two-year $59.99 Unlimited Data Connect plan. A variety of monthly data plans are available starting at $19.99 for 5 MB.

An updated version of Cingular Communication Manager is included with the laptop modem cards. The software gives customers the flexibility to connect to BroadbandConnect, EDGE, GPRS or public and private Wi-Fi hotspots.

BroadbandConnect uses HSDPA/UMTS technology — the global standard and natural 3G evolutionary path for GSM providers. Wireless carriers offering UMTS, EDGE or GPRS can upgrade their networks to HSDPA and be assured there is a continued evolutionary path to faster speeds and more advanced services.

“HSDPA/UMTS gives us the singular advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services to our customers. For businesses and consumers, this means more feature rich services and content,” said Kris Rinne, chief technology officer for Cingular. “It also provides a lower cost method for carrying traffic and more efficient use of spectrum.”

For more information about Cingular BroadbandConnect, customers can call 1-866-429-7222, visit online at www.cingular.com/broadbandconnect or by contacting a business sales representative. Laptop modem cards will be available at select Cingular Wireless retail stores in December and in all stores in January.

Cingular Launches Enhanced Push to Talk Service

Nationwide PTT Service Brings Unique Features and Broadest PTT Coverage Area of Any Wireless Carrier

Cingular is enhancing the way businesses and consumers communicate as it introduces a next generation Push to Talk (PTT) service. The service will operate across the largest Push to Talk coverage area in America, and brings a host of new, unmatched features including:

  • Availability - unique icons allow Cingular PTT users to see if other PTT customers are available before making a PTT call.
  • Quick Group Calling - allows users to select individuals from their contacts and instantly place a group call. In addition to this impromptu group calling, customers can also pre-establish groups in their contact list (up to 30 groups) and call up to 20 people.
  • Convert to Cellular - enables a PTT call to be converted to a regular wireless voice call. Calls with up to 20 participants can be converted effectively creating a mobile conference call.

“We’ve gone the extra mile to offer our customers an innovative service that truly combines the best features of wireless and PTT, and in doing so, set a new benchmark for the industry,” said David Christopher, vice president of consumer product development for Cingular. “The unique features and attractive pricing offer consumers an overall value unmatched by any other national PTT service.”

By integrating walkie-talkie and traditional cellular technology, Cingular provides a refined PTT service that can be used by families, executives or employees at job sites. With one click a PTT user can access their list of individuals and groups and see who is available and who is not. One more click and they are instantly speaking to the person or the whole group (up to 20 people). If a quick PTT call turns into a longer discussion, simply convert the call to cellular. In addition, the service offers:

  • Call Waiting - gives customers the option to accept or decline a second incoming call whether currently on a PTT or regular cellular call.
  • Contact Alerts - lets customers receive alerts when a contact becomes available.
  • Voice Messaging - leave a voice message with one person or a group of people directly in their current cellular voicemail box.
  • Call Me Alerts - allows a user to urgently let someone know they need to talk. A user receiving a “Call Me Alert” can instantly place a PTT call back by pressing the dedicated PTT key.

The service also uses a single phone number for both cellular and PTT service, eliminating the need to remember two numbers.

“Cingular is taking the walkie-talkie service that is so important to blue-collar workers and adding wireless features to make it just as valuable in the white-collar world,” said Joe Lueckenhoff, vice president of business services for Cingular. “The flexibility of converting a call to cellular, letting people know your availability and quickly conferencing groups together, gives business users a real alternative to how they currently use PTT.”

“Cingular took their time and got it right. The company recognizes that Push-to-talk is just the jumping off point for adding a series of value added voice services that will appeal to both existing PTT customers as well as an entirely new set of customers,” said Andrew Seybold, president of Outlook 4Mobility, a well-known consultancy firm. “Value added voice services, including PTT will provide them with a competitive edge across many different market segments. I expect that teens, who prefer to talk in groups, will quickly adopt this PTT service as their own form of voice instant messaging.”

Cingular offers unlimited PTT service features to meet the needs of consumers and businesses. These features offer unlimited minutes, national coverage and no hidden charges for group or national calls. Consumers on a Cingular Nation Plan can add service for $9.99 a month per line. Those on Family Plans can select a $19.99 feature that gives up to five family members on the account unlimited access to the service. Businesses can add a PTT service option to each line of service for $9.99 per month.

Cingular will launch the service with two handsets -the Samsung d357 and the LG F7200. Cingular customers who sign up for the PTT service can opt for the LG F7200 “slider” phone currently being promoted at buy one for $69.99 get the second free or the Samsung d357 currently being promoted at buy one for $99.99 get the second free. In addition to PTT features, the phones offer IM, SMS, MMS, personal organizer, large color screen and access to a variety of wireless data services. Additional phones and devices will be available in the near future.

Cingular Push to Talk, which is powered by the Kodiak Real-Time Exchange(TM) (RTX) System, is currently available over the Cingular ALLOVER(SM) network, which covers more than 270 million people. In addition to providing the broadest coverage of any PTT service, Cingular said it would begin offering International PTT in 2006.

Nokia 6282 phone combines 1 megapixel camera, QVGA display, and sleek slide design with 3G technology

New York, NY, US - As part of its annual Capital Market Days event, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today unveiled one of the industry’s first mobile handsets designed to support 1900MHz UMTS networks expected to go online in the Americas during 2006. In addition to enabling 3G services, the new Nokia 6282 phone features a 2.2 inch, 320×240 pixel QVGA display, a 1 megapixel camera, FM radio, digital music player with hot-swappable miniSD card support, Bluetooth technology and an eye-catching sliding design. The Nokia 6282 phone (GSM 850/1900/1800/UMTS 1900 MHz) is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2006 in markets offering 1900MHz UMTS service.

New UMTS networks supported by the Nokia 6282 phone enable customers to access a number of exciting 3G services. Some of these services include streaming multimedia audio and video content and the rapid upload and download of large files - including downloadable games and video, MP3 or AAC ringtones, or over-the-air synchronization of calendar, contact and to-do information using the built-in SyncML client.

“With the introduction of the Nokia 6282 phone, we are helping to make the promise of high-speed UMTS services in the Americas a reality,” said Kai Oistamo, senior vice president, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “Although it weighs barely 4 ounces, the Nokia 6282 phone is among the most advanced wireless devices available in this market. Without sacrificing size, style or performance, this sleek new device puts a world of possibilities into the hands of consumers in the Americas.”

Featuring the Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition, the Nokia 6282 phone offers users an intuitive way to access the power of this new device. While supporting the latest messaging, browsing, music and video standards, this new interface also takes full advantage of the Nokia 6282 phone’s QVGA display by using an ‘Active Standby Mode’, which allows the idle screen to keep owners informed of calendar and to-do items and to provide quick access to the most-used applications.

The stylish slide design of the Nokia 6282 phone keeps the extra-large display in sight at all times, yet allows it to remain ultra-compact while in the closed position. Additionally, by positioning the imaging controls on the exterior, the Nokia 6282 quickly converts to a conventionally-oriented imaging device that allows 1 megapixel still images and 15 frame-per-second VGA video content to be captured by using the screen as a horizontal viewfinder.
