Nokia Service Suite Prepares the Way for Tomorrow’s Mobility Today

Technology Innovators Already Offering Consumer Services The convergence of cellular and Internet technologies has reached a stage where the future of mobility will be determined by players ready to take the next step. For consumers, using a PC and broadband connection to reach friends and family around the globe has become a familiar procedure. Now with dual mode phones and the increasing availability of home and hotspot wireless LANs (WLANs), consumers can get to the next level.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today announced Nokia Service Suite, a software solution which automates both the connectivity over the available access methods like cellular and WLAN, and also provides the preferred location and presence specific services to the user. Nokia Service Suite heralds a whole new generation of consumer services for voice, data and rich media. Telio, a leading European broadband telephony provider and technology innovator, is the first to adopt and deploy the technology for consumers.

Nokia Service Suite is capable of simplifying and economizing any communication application - the download and upload of rich media, including pictures, music, video podcasts, email and voice. Nokia Service Suite does this by automating connectivity and achieving the most convenient combination of cellular and WLAN access.

Alan Duric, Chief Technology Officer and co-Founder of Telio said about the Nokia Service Suite: “The combination of Nokia’s powerful solution and Telio’s flexible technology platform has enabled a whole new world of possibilities that go well beyond VoIP. As a core technology, I see Nokia Service Suite creating a wave of innovation in the mobile industry and revolutionizing the way people will communicate in future.”

“Nokia Service Suite opens up great new business potential for new and existing services that can be seamlessly deployed by providers and easily consumed by end-users. Telio has proven to be a valuable front runner in the adoption of our technology for consumers. We are delighted with the close cooperation,” said Markku Rauhamaa, Vice President of Local Interactions at Nokia Emerging Business Unit. “All the elements are now in place for the public to enjoy a richer, more economical and accessible mobile experience.”

The possibilities enabled by Nokia Service Suite are already being commercially deployed by service providers like Telio as well as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) companies, including Fujitsu Services Oy.

Nokia Service Suite is available today for all Nokia WLAN enabled dual mode devices, both Nokia Nseries and Nokia Eseries devices. Equally important, the Nokia Service Suite is an open platform that can be used for other WLAN enabled devices. For example, the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is a multimedia computer optimized for Internet Calls. The VoIP framework, based on SIP-protocol is integrated into its user interface, so making an Internet Call on the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is as easy as making a regular voice call, only the call is carried over WLAN.

Nokia Service Suite makes its official debut and will be demonstrated at VON Europe Autumn 2006 Conference in Berlin Germany on November 6 - 8.

Nation’s First ‘Verizon Experience’ Store Opens Tuesday, Presenting Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications Products and Services in High-Tech, Consumer-Friendly Style

Flagship Store in Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Invites Customers to ‘Roll Up Their Sleeves’ and Play, Connect, Watch and Listen

Visitors to the nation’s first Verizon Experience store — in Southlake, Texas — will encounter the most compelling, comprehensive display of high-tech communications and entertainment products and services for the home, business and mobile consumers on the go ever assembled under one retail roof.

The 5,000-square-foot flagship store, located at 1450 Main St. in the Southlake Town Square, opens Tuesday (Oct. 31) and will allow customers to play, connect, watch and listen to Verizon Wireless’ and Verizon Communications’ broadband-rich, entertainment-oriented and productivity- enhancing wireless and wireline services — in a single store visit.

“We’re seeking to retain, and win over, customers’ loyalty amid the most competitive period in our industry’s history,” said Bob Ingalls, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Communications. “The ‘Verizon Experience’ store will demystify how technology improves productivity and makes buying decisions simpler than ever by delivering a shopping experience unlike any other among our peers and competitors.

“We have millions of customers who enjoy ordering Verizon products over the Internet or on the telephone, but we have just as many who want to touch and feel our services in the same way people visit a retail store to see the quality of their new high-definition TV before making a purchase,” said Ingalls. “Our new store allows customers to roll up their sleeves and have a fun experience determining what it would be like to use our services.”

Technology Shines at New ‘Verizon Experience’ Store

Verizon’s newest retail marketing foray brings together the services offered by Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications in a setting where customers can touch and try products, engage dynamic interactive displays and demonstrations, and consult with specially-trained product experts who will accompany customers as they shop for the latest in technology services.

Outfitted with a concierge, a sign-up station, and an innovative demo bar, where experts give one-on-one demonstrations of products, the store is intended to do what it’s called: let customers experience services directly and then purchase what they like.

The Verizon Experience store will greet visitors with the very latest technology: over-sized, high-definition plasma television screens featuring Verizon’s FiOS TV service; a gaming station and computers, enabling customers to test drive ultra-fast FiOS Internet connection speeds of up to 15 megabits per second (Mbps) over Verizon’s 100 percent, fiber-optic network; 12 digital electronic information screens; multiple touch-screen computers that contain detailed product and pricing information; simulated broadband-speed comparisons; interactive kiosks and exhibits; a series of intuitive product demonstrations; and a technical support center.

“Customers who visit the Verizon Experience store will be impressed at the wide range of services available in one location,” said Luis M. Cruz, region president for Verizon Wireless. “The flow of the store allows visitors to immerse themselves in interactive demonstrations or go directly to a specific area of interest such as music, text and picture messaging, ring- tones or personal digital assistants.

“Visitors to the Verizon Experience store can obtain quick technical advice; make a payment on their bill; or talk to in-store product experts who can discuss the services that Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications offer, without having to visit another store,” said Cruz.

Following are some of the services that can be tested and played at the Verizon Experience store, using the actual speeds that a customer will get with a particular broadband service:

  • V CAST Music and video, which provides on-demand access to short news, weather, sports and entertainment video clips; more than 1.4 million downloadable songs; and cutting-edge 3D games — all on mobile phones.
  • BroadbandAccess, utilizing the Verizon Wireless EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) network, provides customers on the go with a wireless Internet connection at broadband speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second (Kbps).
  • The coolest phones and PDAs from Verizon Wireless, such as the Motorola KRZR, LG Chocolate, Treo 700, BlackBerry 8703e and Motorola Q.
  • Verizon One, an advanced home-communications system available to Verizon Online DSL customers, which integrates a DSL modem; 802.11g wireless router; 5.8 Ghz cordless phone; wide color-touch screen; Verizon SuperPages features; family-event planner and reminder; and a one-touch access point for weather, news, sports, stocks and entertainment information.
  • VoiceWing, a high-quality, low-cost, Internet-based calling service that also offers advanced calling features such as visual voice mail, enhanced call-forwarding and synchronized personalized address books. All the features can be controlled by the click of a computer mouse.

Nuance Mobile Gives Users the Power to Be the World’s Fastest Text Messager

Nuance Mobile Dictation Prevails in Speed Challenge Against World Champion Texter

Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading supplier of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that Nuance Mobile Dictation triumphed over the world champion texter in a challenge to determine the fastest and most accurate way to send text messages and email using mobile devices. “The Amazing Race: Mobile Text Messaging” took place at Conversations Mobile, a premier speech event for the mobile communications industry being held in Orlando this week.

In a classic match-up of man vs. machine, Ben Cook, recently crowned the world champion of text messaging, raced against Nuance Mobile Dictation, the speech recognition technology that allows mobile phone users to create text messages using speech. Cook, a teen from Utah, holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest entry of a 160-character standardized message on a mobile device: “The razor toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.” Cook’s previous triple tap record for the standard message stood at 42.22 seconds. Nuance Mobile Dictation crushed the world record time, completing the message in 16.32 seconds.

“Mobile phone subscribers sent over a trillion SMS messages last year - despite the data entry constraints of cumbersome phone keypads - so one can imagine the potential of this market given a simple and intuitive speech-driven SMS interface,” said Michael Thompson, vice president and general manager, telco, search and communications, Nuance. “This technology, currently in trials with carriers, will increase the accessibility of mobile dictation for end users, thereby creating tremendous value for messaging client developers and carriers.”

The complete Amazing Race competition featured four participants: Ben Cook using triple tap input; a former Tegic employee using T9 input; a proficient typist using a Blackberry device with a full QWERTY keyboard; and Nuance’s own staff member demonstrating Nuance Mobile Dictation. Contestants were scored based on the time required to complete the entry of the exact text messages, including appropriate spelling, punctuation and capitalization. In addition to the world record message, the contestants raced using messages average texters would send today, such as: “I’m on my way. I’ll be there in 30 minutes.” Nuance easily claimed victory completing the message in 7.86 seconds, followed by a strong effort from Cook at 16.25 seconds. The contestants using the Blackberry and T9 devices came in a distant third and fourth at 30 seconds and 58 seconds.

Nuance Mobile Dictation is an application built upon the Nuance Mobile Speech Platform announced earlier this week. It features “dictate anywhere” functionality on Windows Mobile and Symbian OSs, allowing users to dictate wherever they see a blinking cursor on their device screen. Nuance Mobile Dictation can also be ported to other OSs and applications.

About Nuance Communications, Inc.

Nuance is a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions for business and consumers around the world. Its technologies, applications, and services make the user experience more compelling by transforming the way people interact with information and how they create, share, and use documents. Verizon Wireless Continues Efforts to Stop Wireless Spam and Protect Customer Privacy

Verizon Wireless, the nation’s leading wireless service provider, said today that it is continuing its efforts to protect its customers from wireless spam. Over the past several months, the company has filed several additional lawsuits against people and companies who sent unwanted text messages to Verizon Wireless subscribers, offering everything from discount prescription medication, to vacations, to stock information. Those lawsuits, each filed in U.S. District Court in Trenton, N.J., include:

  • A “John Doe” lawsuit filed in early October alleging that certain parties sent nearly 30,000 unsolicited messages promoting various Web sites selling medications and promoting a specific company’s stock. In many cases, the actual messages include non-sensical words, with an attachment that includes information about the stock. Attachments are not able to be delivered or viewed via text messaging.
  • A “John Doe” lawsuit filed on September 29 alleging that certain parties inundated Verizon Wireless and its subscribers with approximately 550,000 unsolicited text messages promoting various penny stocks that are traded over the counter. Many of the messages in this case were sent to subscribers with New York area codes.
  • A lawsuit filed in June 2006 said certain “John Does” were alleged to be involved with sending more than 1.1 million text messages advertising discount prescription medication. Nearly 70 percent of these messages went to subscribers with New Jersey area codes. The Web site from which these messages were sent, which is registered to an entity in Poland, has since been shut down.?

“These lawsuits are just a small part of our company’s efforts to stop unwanted messages from reaching our customers’ handsets,” said Steve Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel, Verizon Wireless. “Verizon Wireless remains committed to defending the strong wall of customer privacy we’ve built over the years through our network practices and our industry leading pro-consumer policies.”

Blocking TXT Messages

Customers are able to block certain text messages by logging on to www.vtext.com, going to “MyTXT” and choosing “TXT blocking” from the drop-down menu. Options include blocking all messages sent from the Web, or designating certain addresses from which you don’t want to receive text messages.

Verizon Wireless to Launch Shock and Water Resistant Verizon Wireless G’zOne Type-V Rugged Phone

G’zOne Type-V Meets U.S. Military Standards for Water Resistance, Humidity, Shock and Dust

Verizon Wireless, owner of the nation’s most reliable wireless network, and UTStarcom, Inc. (NASDAQ:UTSI), exclusive North American distributor of G’zOne, today announced the online availability on October 20 of the Verizon Wireless G’zOne Type-V — a phone built to withstand harsh environmental conditions and provides reliable performance for customers with outdoor lifestyles. Exclusively available through Verizon Wireless in the United States, the G’zOne Type-V is compliant to multiple Military Standards including exposure to temperatures in excess of 140 degrees F, extreme vibration, solar radiation, conditions set to simulate storm conditions of two inches of rainfall per hour with high winds and submersion in one meter of water.

In addition to meeting rigorous testing standards, the G’zOne Type-V is able to access some of the key services that Verizon Wireless customers have grown to expect including V CAST, which gives customers access to high-quality video clips from today’s hottest content providers and 3D games right in the palms of their hands. The phone also features a 2.0 megapixel camera so customers can capture still and video images while on-the-go — whether they want a picture of the summit after a hike or the kids playing in the yard.

The G’zOne Type-V passed all of the following tests, performed in accordance with Military Standards 810 degrees F, with all ports (battery, headset and charging) on the phone closed and the antenna secured:

  • The Water Resistance test was performed in accordance with Method 506.4, Procedure I. The G’zOne Type-V was subjected to this test with the handset open and closed, but with ports closed for 30 minutes on the front of the unit and then 30 minutes on the back of the unit. The test was designed to simulate rainfall of 2 inches per hour with a 40 MPH wind.
  • Immersion tests were conducted in accordance with Method 512.4, Procedure I. The G’zOne Type-V was immersed in water for a period of 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter (3.28 feet), but with ports closed.
  • The Humidity test was performed in accordance with Method 507.4. The G’zOne Type-V tested for operation after the conclusion of the tenth cycle. Each cycle was 24 hours and the entire test was performed over ten days. The temperature was cycled between 86 and 140 degrees F with the relative humidity at 95 percent constant.
  • The Salt Fog test was performed in accordance with Method 509.4. The G’zOne Type-V was subjected to 48 hours of salt solution of five parts by weight of Na CI in 95 parts by weight of de-ionized water with a chamber temperature of 95 degrees F.
  • The Drop test was performed in accordance with Method 516.5, Procedure IV. The G’zOne Type-V was sequentially dropped in non-operating mode, onto each face, edge and corner for a total of 26 drops from a height of 1.50 meters (4.9 feet). The drop surface was defined as two-inch- thick plywood over a steel plate over concrete.
  • The Vibration test was performed in accordance with Method 514.5, Procedure I, Category 24 for the non-operational condition. The G’zOne Type-V was clamped to an aluminum plate and subjected to the following levels of vibration: Non-Operational 0.04 g2 /Hz at 20-1000 Hz, -6 dB/Octave at 1000-2000 Hz, one hour/axis duration.
  • The Solar Radiation test was performed in accordance with Method 505.4, Procedure I. The G’zOne Type-V was exposed to three 24-hour cycles with temperatures of 90 degrees F to 120 degrees F and solar intensities of 1120 W/m(2).
  • The Dust Resistance test was performed in accordance with Method 510.4, Procedure I. A temperature of 95 degrees F was used for this test. Silica flour as defined by the test standard was used. Devices are given a passing grade when moving parts are not bound or blocked and if the unit powers on.

DataViz’ Documents To Go 9 Sets the Wireless Office Free

New InTact Technology Eliminates the Need for Synchronization

Today DataViz announced Documents To Go 9 for the Palm OS platform. Documents To Go is a mobile office suite which allows users to create, view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files as well as view Adobe PDF files on a mobile device. Version 9 has many new enhancements with the most significant being the addition of InTact Technology which ensures that ALL file formatting is kept “intact” when editing and e-mailing office files on a handheld or smartphone. Other new features include: An integrated file explorer, a new user interface, updates to Word To Go, Sheet To Go and Slideshow To Go. Customers who have a previous version or who received the Professional Edition on their Palm branded device can upgrade for $29.99.

For years Documents To Go has utilized DocSync Technology to retain complex file formatting when editing files on a mobile device. This technology developed by DataViz, relies on a wired synchronization between the computer and mobile device in order to merge changes back into the original document on the desktop while retaining file formatting. With customer expectations growing and devices becoming more and more powerful, customers are now relying on their smartphones as standalone devices instead of companions to the desktop.

DataViz has replaced DocSync technology with InTact Technology in Documents To Go 9. Now files that are edited on the mobile device no longer have to rely on a wired synchronization with a desktop in order to maintain file integrity. Edited files on the mobile device can be emailed as attachments and still retain their complex file formatting including track changes, headers and footers, macros and animations to name a few. To find out more about InTact Technology and its benefits download a white paper from www.dataviz.com/intactpaper

“With more and more customers using wireless devices to mobilize their office we are finding a growing expectation and a need for a reliable document editing solution that does not rely on a wired synchronization,” said Danny Tu product manager, DataViz, Inc. “The addition of InTact Technology allows our customers to be truly mobile and gives them complete confidence when it comes to editing files on their device. “

“As Palm smartphones like the Treo 700p have become more and more powerful, a need for a native document editing solution that can take advantage of this mobile computing platform becomes very important,” said Mike Rank, director of developer relations for Palm, Inc. “The addition of InTact Technology takes document editing on a wireless device to a whole new level.”

The main Documents To Go office applications for the handheld have also been updated. The new enhancements include:

  • File Explorer – An integrated file explorer has been added to the main Documents application to make browsing for files on expansion cards and internal memory easier.
  • Word To Go – Support for viewing and editing footnotes, endnotes, comments and text boxes has been added. In addition, support for Table Of Contents has also been added.
  • Sheet To Go – Support for XY scatter plot charts, True Type fonts including varying type faces and font sizes and additional font formatting such as italic and underline has been added.
  • SlideShow To Go – New additions include support for native PowerPoint editing for both Macintosh and Windows users.

Pricing and Availability

Documents To Go Premium Edition retails for $49.99 and is available directly from DataViz, as well as many retail and online stores including CompUSA, Amazon.com and Handango.com. Upgrade pricing of $29.99 is available directly from DataViz for all previous Documents To Go customers, including those who received Documents To Go as bundled software with a Palm handheld or smartphone.

The Documents To Go product line also includes support for both Symbian OS based UIQ and Series 80 platforms. For information about the features supported per platform, visit www.dataviz.com.
