Harris County Sheriffs Department Utilizes Motorola`s Mobile Identification System to Help Solve Murder Case

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today that its latest Motorola Printrak Biometric Identification Solution (BIS) equipped with Motorola Mobile Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) assisted Harris County Sheriffs Office (HCSO) in the capture of a wanted murder suspect.

According to Pete Schroedter, AFIS manager, officers went to a home to serve an arrest warrant for a wanted suspect. Law enforcement officials did not find the suspect; however, they did encounter three males with no identification. Using Motorola’s Mobile AFIS in conjunction with the Motorola Printrak BIS officers were able to positively match one of the individual’s fingerprints against HCSO’s list of wanted suspects. He was the subject of a murder felony warrant in an unrelated case. Although HCSO’s officers were not in the home looking for this suspect, they were able to make an arrest resulting in increased safety in Harris County.

Mobile AFIS is a hand-held device that enables officers to capture fingerprint images of a detained person at the scene or on the street. The device transmits this information in a secure, encrypted format over a private network to the central Motorola Printrak BIS database. At the central site, advanced matching algorithms perform a search to compare this biometric data against the information of known or wanted criminals. The matching process is entirely automated, referred to as lights out, and an officer receives an immediate response. A match, referred to as a hit, delivers a photo of the individual and information pertaining to warrants and criminal records.

“Motorola’s Mobile AFIS proved to be a vital tool in the identification and arrest of this murder suspect. Without the Mobile AFIS tools, this suspect probably would have remained free for a while longer,” said Pete Schroedter.

Motorola is a leading provider of mission critical communication technologies, including biometric identification solutions and Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) to help government and enterprise agencies accurately identify individuals. Motorola is one of the world’s leading biometric companies, with trusted biometric solutions deployed in nearly 40 countries.

Alcatel demonstrates Europe`s first live Mobile TV in S-band

Alcatel announced today the successful demonstration of Europe’s first broadcast of live TV channels on mobile handsets in S-band. The demonstration took place in Alcatel’s UK premises. It is using the new DVB-SH standard (Satellite services for Handhelds), which is currently being drafted by the DVB Project. To perform this demonstration, Alcatel was assisted by UK broadcasters Sky, ITV and BBC.

Representatives from European mobile operators, TV broadcasters, industry analyst firms and regulatory bodies attending this demonstration were able to enjoy high quality images displayed on SAGEM myMobileTV handsets. These terminals are using the S-band telecom frequency between 2.17GHz and 2.20GHz, which is adjacent to the 3G/UMTS band. 30MHz of spectrum is currently available all across Europe and in other major regions in the world.

DVB-SH is a new technology targeting the S-band. DVB-SH is a related standard to DVB-H. With DVB-SH technology, Mobile TV signals can be broadcast from satellites as well as from terrestrial transmitters directly to handhelds. DVB-SH handhelds can be designed in such a way that they become compatible with DVB-H so that both standards can be received in one end-user terminal.

In addition, Alcatel demonstrated two possible key technical features using the DVB-SH standard. Reception Antenna Diversity, a feature using two antennas inside the same mobile device, enables improvements in the signal quality under difficult conditions. Furthermore, improved Time Interleaving overcomes fading impairment in mobility conditions. The significant quality enhancement was demonstrated by implementing these DVB-SH features.

On the occasion of this demonstration, Professor Ulrich Reimers, Chairman of the Technical Module of DVB Project declared: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to witness a live Mobile TV demonstration in the S-band even before the new Mobile TV standard has been finally designed. Within the DVB -Project, we have decided to give that standard a new name - DVB-SH - digital video broadcast from satellite for handhelds. DVB-SH is a perfect complement to other standards, such as DVB-H, which is typically using UHF frequencies but is capable of using the L-band. Thus DVB-SH may have a significant impact on the global Mobile TV industry.”

Olivier Coste, President of Alcatel’s mobile broadcast activities concluded: “Quality of Service is essential for operators to attract and retain Mobile TV users. Today, we demonstrated that high quality live Mobile TV using the S-band works. This can be up and running commercially very soon. With the additional benefits of universal indoor and countrywide coverage, the fundamentals of our solution are already solid enough to enable operators to profit from sustainable Mobile TV market growth thanks to the S-band.”

About Alcatel
Alcatel provides communications solutions to telecommunication carriers, Internet service providers and enterprises for delivery of voice, data and video applications to their customers or employees. Alcatel brings its leading position in fixed and mobile broadband networks, applications and services, to help its partners and customers build a user-centric broadband world. With sales of EURO 13.1 billion and 58,000 employees in 2005, Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries. For more information, visit Alcatel on the Internet: http://www.alcatel.com

About Alcatel’s “Unlimited Mobile TV” solution
The goal of Alcatel’s “Unlimited Mobile TV” solution is to make television available on mobile phones and other devices throughout rural and urban areas, including indoors, with a wide range of programming options and excellent image quality, regardless of the number of viewers simultaneously watching the same program. This universal broadcast coverage is possible thanks to the unique combination of a high-power geo-stationary satellite for cost-effective nationwide coverage and a network of low power repeaters, co-located with mobile base stations, to provide urban and indoor coverage. This innovative solution uses DVB-SH, an evolution of the DVB-H standard in the 2 GHz MSS band, a telecom frequency band between 2.17 and 2.2 GHz associated with satellite usage, which is adjacent to the 3G/UMTS band. This 30MHz band is currently available all across Europe. For more information: www.alcatel.com/mobiletv

The Nokia 6086: Compelling features and seamless connectivity

At Nokia’s annual Capital Market Days taking place in Amsterdam today, Nokia unveiled its latest multimode UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) handset, the Nokia 6086, allowing consumers to stay in touch - in any environment.  Designed for consumers who strive for simplicity and value for money, the quad-band GSM and UMA-enabled cameraphone hides its sophisticated circuitry within a classic design with a large keypad and intuitive user menu. The Nokia 6086 is expected to begin shipping during the first quarter of 2007 with an anticipated retail price of 200 euros before subsidies or taxes.

“The key to the success of the Nokia 6086 - and UMA technology for that matter - is the seamless consumer experience,” says Kai Oistamo, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “Based on a number of successful UMA trials, the Nokia 6086 has proven to be a top-performer, flawlessly switching from quad-band GSM to WLAN coverage, as the environment demands. The Nokia 6086 successfully integrates the radio technologies making them completely transparent to the consumer.”
Other standard features of the Nokia 6086 phone include:
- Camcorder and video player
- Wire-free enhancement use and synchronization via Bluetooth
- VGA camera with 4X digital zoom
- 6MB free user memory and microSD slot to enable storage of your favorite music
- Up to 5 hours of talk time, 10 days of standby
With UMA technology, the Nokia 6086 benefits operators as well, allowing them to deliver voice and data services to their subscriber base over WLAN, decreasing their costs related to network deployment and dramatically increasing mobile service availability.
Orange will be one of the first operators to offer the Nokia 6086 phone. The handset will be added to Orange’s Unik (UMA) offer which was announced in September and has been launched in France, the Netherlands, UK and soon in Spain and Poland.
“Our Unik offer combines the best of fixed and mobile within a single handset, allowing customers to use one phone to meet all their needs - with one number, one address book, one voice mail and one bill,” says  Yves Maitre, Vice President, Devices, Orange. “Already customers can choose from the largest range of UMA phones. The addition of the Nokia 6086 strengthens our Unik offer and builds on the strong tradition we have of working with Nokia to combine cutting edge technology with exceptional ease of use.”
UMA is a cost-effective way to expand cellular for operators to expand their coverage for voice and data services to homes and enterprises where it might be too difficult or expensive to build cellular coverage indoors. While consumers reap the benefits of better indoor coverage using a a single number, UMA allows operators to fully leverage their cellular assets via alternative radio methods.

Nokia Capital Market Days 2006

Nokia updates its targets and outlines its refined strategy
Today, at its annual Capital Market Days event, Nokia presented its forecasts for the industry and its financial targets for the next one to two years.
In his keynote presentation, Nokia President and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said, “To enjoy the full benefits of the continuing growth of the global device market that Nokia expects, we’ve made a number of important strategic moves and organizational changes, and have put our marketing and design efforts into a sharper focus. With these changes, and more to come, we believe Nokia has the power to build a further improved portfolio of devices that raises industry standards to a whole new level.”
Kallasvuo also described the unique opportunity he believes Nokia has to mobilize the internet for the mass market. “With an estimated 850 million Nokia device users out there, we are positioned to connect more people to the internet than any other company in the world. We are actively aligning our strategy in pursuit of this major business opportunity.”
Nokia forecasts for the industry:
- Nokia expects industry mobile device volumes in 2007 to grow by up to 10% from the approximately 970 million units Nokia estimates for 2006. We expect the volume growth in 2007 to be above 15% in Asia Pacific, China, and Middle East & Africa, and below 10% in Europe, Latin America and North America.
- Nokia expects the device industry to experience value growth in 2007, but expects some decline in industry ASPs, primarily reflecting the increasing impact of the emerging markets and competitive factors in general.
- Nokia now forecasts that the three billion mobile subscriptions mark will be reached in 2007, instead of in 2008 as Nokia forecasted previously.
- Nokia expects slight growth in the mobile and fixed infrastructure and related services market in euro terms in 2007.
Nokia financial targets:
- Nokia operating margin target of 15% during the next one to two years. This target is revised from the one to two year 17% operating margin target Nokia set in December 2005, primarily due to Nokia’s increased exposure to the infrastructure market following the expected start of operations of Nokia Siemens Networks.
- Device (Mobile Phones and Multimedia combined) operating margin target of 17% during the next one to two years. This target is revised from the one to two year 17%-18% device operating margin target Nokia set in December 2005.
- Nokia Siemens Networks operating margin target of 10% plus during the next one to two years. Nokia Siemens Networks maintains its target to achieve a double digit operating margin by year end 2007, before restructuring charges.
- Nokia targets an improvement in the ratio of Nokia gross margin to R&D expenses and an improvement in the ratio of Nokia gross margin to sales and marketing expenses in 2007, compared to 2006.
- Nokia expects to meet its previously stated target to reduce overall R&D expenditure to 9%-10% of net sales by the end of 2006.
Other Nokia targets:
- Share gains in devices in 2007.
Mobile Phones
Nokia outlined the leading position of its entry-level devices in the world’s emerging markets and presented its new strategic priorities for device development. The company said that in its development efforts it will pay special attention to certain selected devices, a move that comes together with a number of other changes. By refreshing its design approach, introducing a consumer-category driven strategy to its product portfolio, and focusing its marketing spend, Nokia aims to reinforce its device market leadership and continue to further refine its mid-range portfolio.
Multimedia
Nokia described its objective to capitalize on digital convergence by capturing value from traditional single-purposed product categories - such as music players, cameras and pocketable computers - with its Nokia Nseries multimedia computers. Nokia has an estimated market share of approximately 50% of the converged device segment* into which its multimedia computers fall. This makes Nokia the clear leader of the converged device market, which is expected to reach almost 100 million units in 2006**.
Enterprise Solutions
Nokia outlined its competitive position and opportunities in the nascent enterprise market. To date, the Nokia Eseries of business devices have been ranged by more than 160 operators globally and over 1.6 million units have been shipped. Nokia has also sold more than one million licenses for its Intellisync Mobile Suite email solution to date. With its growing portfolio of Nokia Eseries devices, as well as its open and extensible mobileware, multi-channel distribution system and scale benefits, Nokia believes it has all the building blocks for success in this market.
Networks
Nokia said that progress towards forming Nokia Siemens Networks is proceeding, with operations currently expected to commence in January 2007. The transaction has been given US and EU anti-trust approvals; the new company’s governance model, global mode of operation and organizational structure have all been defined; and the estimated cost synergies of EUR 1.5 billion annually by 2010 have been identified.

BlackBerry Smart Card Reader Enables Controlled Access to PCs

Research In Motion (RIM) today announced enhancements to the BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader software that will allow the smart card reader to facilitate controlled access over a Bluetooth® connection to a PC running Microsoft® Windows® XP (SP2 or higher). The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader features a lightweight, wearable design. It supports the ISO 7816 specification for smart cards, including support for Department of Defense Common Access Cards (CACs) and the DataKey/Safenet 330 cards.   The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader can utilize the embedded security credentials of a smart card to provide two-factor authenticated access via Bluetooth® to both BlackBerry® handsets and PCs.

“The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader allows customers to leverage their existing investment in smart card security,” said Scott Totzke, Director, Global Security Group, Research In Motion. “It builds upon the security, flexibility and mobility of the BlackBerry platform and provides users with a single, convenient solution that enables controlled access for both BlackBerry handsets as well as PCs.”

Key benefits of the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader include:

  • Prevention of Unauthorized Access – Once “paired” with a PC or BlackBerry handset, the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader runs its authentication session over a secure Bluetooth connection, which automatically locks the PC or BlackBerry handset if the reader and the paired device fall “out of range”. Ranges can be set by IT policy controls for proximity as close as 5 feet.
  • Convenience – The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader provides users with the convenience of a single reader to control access to BlackBerry handsets and PCs. It is a slim, compact (4.06″ x 2.3″ x 0.81″) and light (2.6 oz) peripheral that features long battery life, uses the same USB charger as a BlackBerry handset, and can be conveniently worn on a lanyard. A user simply inserts their smart card into the reader and provides their login credentials on the “paired” PC or BlackBerry handset to initiate access.
  • S/MIME Support – The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader works with certificates on smart cards to leverage an organization’s S/MIME infrastructure in conjunction with Microsoft® Exchange or IBM® Lotus® Domino®. It allows employees to digitally sign and encrypt messages from either their BlackBerry handset or a PC, providing sender-to-recipient security for messages that would otherwise travel across the Internet as open and readable text.
  • Advanced Security Features – The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, together with the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution, supports advanced security to meet IT requirements in corporate and public sectors, featuring:
    • An AES-256 encryption overlay for Bluetooth
    • A FIPS 140-2 validated encryption module
    • Coverity Certification for Quality Code Level 2 and Secure Code Level 2
    • IT policy controls for enforcing usage on BlackBerry handsets or PCs
    • The ability to wirelessly manage security keys on BlackBerry Smart Card Readers through the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server (version 4.0.2 or higher)
  • Compliance – The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader can be used to comply with various government and corporate security requirements for smart cards.  For example, the use of the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader with
